I saw this on the news tonight, a Jewish family staged a fake attack on their restaurant most likely to receive money from a gofundme campaign. Apparently they are having money problems.

This paragraph is from CBC.
Oxana and Maxim acknowledge that their restaurant has struggled and they had attempted to sell it. In order to pay off loans used to start the business, the family also put their home in the Rural Municipality of Petersfield up for sale. They deny this could have motivated them to stage the attack and vandalism, stating that insurance for the damage would not pay very much.

WINNIPEG -- What looked like an anti-Semitic attack at a Winnipeg cafe that drew public concern and political condemnation was not a hate crime but an alleged sham staged by owners of the business, police said Wednesday.

Officers responded last Thursday to a report that a woman who worked at the BerMax Caffe and Bistro was assaulted and that the business was vandalized and spray-painted with hate-related graffiti. It was the night before Passover.

After a lengthy investigation involving 25 officers and 1,000 hours of investigative work, police said they charged the three owners of the cafe -- including the woman who was reportedly assaulted -- with public mischief.

"Last night, investigators formed the belief and came to the conclusion that the incident ... was staged," Winnipeg police Chief Danny Smyth said.

"I am hugely disappointed and frankly angry that this family has used hate and racism in such a disingenuous way. In doing so, they have allowed cynicism to creep into this discussion -- cynicism that trivializes genuine victims of hate."

Alexander Berent, 56, Oxana Berent, 48, and Maxim Berent, 29 were released on a promise to appear in court next month. They have not entered pleas.

Police were already investigating earlier reports of anti-Semitic graffiti at the cafe dating back to December. As news of last week's apparent attack spread, a GoFundMe page was set up to help the owners. Politicians also condemned the crime.

"Winnipeggers stand (with) members of our Jewish community today & always, as we combat racism & antisemitism, & defend human rights together," Mayor Brian Bowman wrote on Twitter at the time.

"We (should) all condemn last night's act of hate at BerMax Caffe & Bistro & support Γåòwpgpolice its hate crime investigation."

Be'TLV, a non-profit organization that led the fundraising effort, said Wednesday it will refund all money it had raised -- about $900.

"Everyone at Be'TLV is shocked," read a statement on the group's Facebook page.

"We will co-operate with the police. All donors will be refunded."

The Jewish Federation of Winnipeg said it was "deeply disturbed" to learn of the police allegations.

"Filing false complaints of criminal acts of anti-Semitism are not only illegal, they undermine the important work necessary to counter anti-Semitism and hate in all forms," the group wrote in a statement to media.

"We reiterate our appreciation of the work of the Winnipeg Police Service and their continued support for the Jewish community."

Attempts to reach the cafe's owners via phone and email were unsuccessful Wednesday.

Smyth said he could not discuss a possible motive for what happened. He also said police will not change their approach to investigating future cases.

"We took it ... in good faith and we will continue to do so. We have a strong relationship with many of the communities in our city.

Charges or not, these restaurant proprietors know there’s actually little risk in a hoax. There will always be a market for convicted hoaxers to successfully argue to many that they were tried and sentenced by the oppressive, racist Gentile white man’s patriarchy.

Why are you talking about conspiracy theories? A conspiracy theory is something stupid like saying Sandy Hook was a staged attack. This family is being charged.

The news I posted, Jussie Smollet, things like mattress girl, Judge Kavanaugh are all hoaxes that at one point the majority of people or news organizations seemed to at least initially believe. It just needs to be pointed out that a significant amount of these "hate crimes" are fake.

It isn't like this is some cherry picked article from years ago, this is Canadian national news from yesterday.

I could really care less about jews either way and my post history would reflect that. I don't recall ever posting in the JQ thread or Holocaust thread.

Are they politically connected? These kind of hoaxes are usually done to further a political cause (ie raising awareness, fighting "antisemitism", painting the right or straight white men as violent and hateful) and not just for money or attention.
When the mainstream media plays along, that's when you know it's all a calculated effort to further a political goal.

Like was said, Winnipeg has a very large Jewish population. I know several people from there (including two who are Jewish), and have been there a few times. I will leave it at that....

As for hate crimes being hoaxes historically, and the media not talking about it. Yes, it is the case that most hate crimes that the media has run away with have turned out to be hoaxes. When they are debunked as such, if the media even reports it at all, they do it in a small side bar at the back of the A section where 95% of people will never read it or otherwise acknowledge it.

Some recent Canadian examples are the hijab-cutting incident(s), where Justin Trudeau was already tweeting about how we have to do more to stop Islamophobia, even before the story had time to be verified.

Ann Coulter wrote a really good book called "Mugged: Racial Demagoguery from the Seventies to Obama". It had entire chapter about hate-crimes that the US media turned into front-page, head-line dominating news stories (resulting in campus riots, speeches from Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, etc.) that all turned out to be hoaxes.

Again, this sort of this happens all the time, it's just that the media doesn't want it discussed since it doesn't fit their .. ahem... agenda.

Another direction to go is heavily punishing the hoaxers with a penalty at least similar to the crimes they are accusing. Works even more for false rape accusations, since it's a more serious crime

Faking jewishness is, or used to be, quite common in FSU, boludo. Like, maybe one-third of the EE "jews" who settled in (or transited through) Israel some years after the fall of the Soviet Union, were fake Jews. Even involved surgery, occasionally.

There is nothing an Ukrainian family would not do in order to get visas for Canada, by the way. Faking jewishness, learning French, claiming rape or duress, or whatever might help.
