Trump Curse Strikes Again: Actress Felicity Huffman Arrested In College Bribery Case

Complete list of busted people here:

http://archive.is/3Tn63

This is what happens when education goes from a means of passing down culture and history to results-based corporate workforce training (and NPC programming) and when too many people are going to college with the majority applying to certain schools to have name recognition on their resumes.

If some lower class kid still wants to get programmed, remind him/her that Norway, Germany and Luxembourg provide it to Americans for free. Plus he/she will get a taste of America's future if the wall isn't built.

Everyone has covered just about everything, and of course we knew that this was happening, but here's what I don't get...

What's so important that these people are doing that they can't spend the time educating their kids?

Granted William H. Macy is an A list actor, but the rest of them?

Felicity Huffman has done five movies and a hacky, by-the-numbers network crime drama since leaving her hacky, by-the-numbers network female porn drama Desperate Housewives. She probably works 6-8 months of the year, giving her tons of time off (us proles get 2-4 weeks + holidays) and she never has to worry about money.

If she can't sit her brainless daughter (and both her and the Loughlin girl look #DestinedforDubai) down for not even an hour a day to help with her studies (the course load for the average Western student is what, 8 hours in school eight months of the year and 30-90 minutes of homework five days a week?), she could have hired the best tutors money can buy.

'Okay honey this is Miss Zhang, she is your new math tutor!'
'Math is like, hard and shit, you guys have more than enough money to make sure I never have to work a day in my life or have a thot in my pretty little head!'
'Because you got a D in math last semester, now listen to Miss Zhang and raise your grades or I'm taking away your credit cards!'

Lori Loughlin, same same. FIVE! movies since 2001 and before Fuller House* and a billionaire or at least high nine figure husband - she works maybe 3-4 months a year IN YEARS SHE DECIDES TO WORK!

Again, she could easily have gotten elite tutors and spent the time on her own helping her daughter study and learn, instead of doing what I imagine she did and spoiling her rotten to the point that her thoughts about university were 'like...I just wanna go to, like games, and like, continue to instathot, lol!'

Oh, I know what happened...

'You kids are important...just less important than my hopes, dreams, image and the shit I wanna buy!'

*: and while we're at it, just who was saying 'Bring back Full House'!? That show sucked aside from should-be-on-the-forum John Stamos.

The prestige in the name ex USC Grad - brings oohs and ahhs

The networking and connections.

Of course the party life, and marrying up for women.

Of course people who are dropping half a mill at any of these colleges could give it to their kids and help them invest.

But at the same time, if they're throwing away that money, it's basically fuck you money to them probably.

Of course those are important, but what I'm mainly saying is that they could have bypassed this scandal if they spent more time and resources actually educating their daughters - something the proles (who these people are obviously better than) with their two weeks vacation, 9-5 jobs and five figure salary can somehow manage to do, instead of what I imagine they were doing, which was trying to be 'Miss Cool Mom!', 'My daughter's best friend!' and 'Sure I'll buy you an Aston Martin for your sweet sixteen!'.

Instead of saying 'Pull your shit together or I'm taking away your car and phone!' they said 'Just be the best Instathot you can be!'

There are kids raised without fathers in the ghetto who go to these schools, but you have every advantage available and you still gotta bribe admissions? That means your kid is a moron and you're a terrible parent.

But instead they were lazy and said 'I can buy my way out of this problem when the time comes!'.

It's all fun and games until you have federal charges brought against you, get your daughter blackballed and blow the lid off what's potentially huge and far reaching scam...

60 years ago, useless little makeup diva hottie Olivia would've been married straight out of high school. Literally, she would've been married at 18 to her town's most promising young doctor or lawyer. There would've been NO QUESTION of her going to college.

Today, however, going to college is seen as a middle- and upper-class RIGHT.

You can see girls like her rebelling against that demand. She even said it in her little video. She should never have been forced into higher education.

Anyways, I think we're starting to hit an inflection point in higher education.

Lori Loughlin and her husband are complete dipshits. You could sell them a gold-colored tap for the same price as a tap made from actual gold, such was their ham-fisted appreciation of the options with $500,000 at their disposal. Kudos to Huffman - she spent a comparative pittance, a paltry $15,000.

The fashion designer husband of Loughlin is worth close to $100m MINIMUM.

If they wanted the girls to get into USC so badly, they could have taken that $500,000 and paid an army of tutors to get them into college through the socioeconomically unfair but still legal way. No risk and only a sum of money comparable to the bribe spent.

Hire a state university professor for $50 p/h for each subject (or aspect of the SAT/ACT) during high school. These professors would’ve been desperate to please for that kind of rate and there’s no real difference between the quality of elite university professors and state ones, other than the latter usually being from less well-off backgrounds (privilege perpetuates itself in both admissions for college and where college professors work later on).

On top of that, the Italian husband/father could have offered the girls $100,000 each semester in college provided they kept their grades up and put in the necessary hours to practice for their SATs in high school. Basically make their inheritance contingent on proper effort and performance.

The girls were going to get an inheritance anyway, so better to milk the threat of them losing that inheritance as much as you can to get the airheads to start moving.

Had they thought this through even an iota, Loughlin and wannabe Fabio would have done the above, plus buttressed their kids’ chances of impressing the admissions office with “charity” work. Olivia and her sister could have swarmed social media with narcisstic photos of them mingling with inner-city black kids or doing hospital visits with cancer kids, even soliciting GoFundMe money for pages run by third-parties. A family as wealthy as theirs is not sacrificing anything by doing this, other than mere minutes of time, and they could have harnessed the power of sadly legal admissions corruption, instead of getting in trouble for the illegal kind by paying bribes.

In total, this plan would have taken them a couple of hours a week to manage and enforce.

Dumbasses.

People really do underestimate the role of upbringing, circumstances growing up, parents, and the kind of place you were raised in on your success in life, I'd say they are equally as important as hard work and talent. I used to envy these kinds of kids in adolescence, the kinds of circumstances they had with the nice schools in the suburbs, parents investing money on education, and going out of their way to set their kids up for success. Let's just say that not all of us had this.....

All my classmates had the brains and work ethic but did not have the knowledge, access or circumstances to get into the best schools. I ended up at a state school, busted my ass, and ended up getting a nice job after college. The only perk of going to a quality state school from what I observed (but never really experience) is that you are around hotter girls and go to better parties. Friends I made who went to Ivy Leagues complain about the lack of attractive women and fun atmosphere.

It still did hurt a bit to see the kinds of opportunities these kids at the Ivies and top state schools had growing up though. Safe neighborhoods, nice fun experiences, chances to really grow, and an opportunity to develop themselves early in life. You had the chance to be around some classmates who were normal people with some interesting hobbies or were easy to talk to instead of a lot of classmates on the wrong side of the law.

What angers me the most is how kids blow opportunities like this in life not knowing how good they have. All of these wealthy suburban kids that do not give two fucks about school despite having access to the best schooling system. How they have the nicest schools in the best areas in their favor and so many circumstances just begging them to try just a little bit in high school, but they don't give a fuck. Compare that to an inner city environment where a kid is lucky to have a peaceful classroom where he can fucking learn.

When all is said and done though, the opportunity in life to have success is there regardless..

I have seen more than a handful of kids from "non-targets" end up at the top Investment banks or big 4 consulting.

Outside of those professions and maybe some Venture Capital work, I feel like the importance of school prestige slowly drops off.

Those benefits are substantially less important if you're already famous. Household name actors don't really need much help networking. I see this in my own circle because people who are professional athletes tend to cruise right into "elite" finance/business jobs normally reserved for "preftigious" Ivy League types. Enough people are drawn in by the celebrity factor, their own fanboyism towards their mainstream interest of choice, and being able to say "I work with X" that it overrides most other considerations.

Any marrying up would occur at Stanford/Harvard/Oxford, and even then it's unlikely because those families do practice political/genetic marriages with tail on the side.

Good article from Zerohedge on the college scam.

Quote:Quote:

An old friend of mine, who taught political science for 25 years at the University of Colorado, was known to tell his students that the real reason they were there was to marry people from the right social class.

Even if Susie doesn't meet a doctor at college, it's still best to send Susie to a place where she learns to socialize and interact with the sorts of people who will eventually become doctors and engineers and successful business people. When one is finished with his or her "education," one has a nice degree to show for it, plus a social circle comprised of presumably soon-to-be-successful people.

So, it shouldn't surprise anyone that it turns out rich Hollywood actors with intellectually and academically mediocre children have become obsessed with getting their children into high-status colleges. They employ bribes and fake test scores to purchase what they've always been able to purchase otherwise: a stylish consumer product, which is essentially all a college degree is for most people.

In a certain way, one has to admire these corrupt, cheating parents because they are too savvy to buy the nonsense that the higher education industry has been peddling for decades.

As ridiculous as it sounds, there are still people in higher education who spout quaint theories about "liberal education" and how college is a time for self-reflection and becoming "immersed in the great books of the Western Tradition," and so on.

There is surely a tiny minority of college students who actually believe this — many of whom grow up to become professional students and college faculty — but college has long been largely about certification.

The college degree, on the other hand, was valuable because it communicated a certain elite status.

And this is what the middle classes really wanted most. After all, it's hard to imagine an 1830s middle-class family patriarch, slaving away at the family shipping business, and scraping together tuition money for junior just so he can go have deep thoughts about the implications of the Peloponnesian War.

Wealthy Hollywood types, being relentless and cynical social climbers, likely figured this out years ago. So they've now zeroed in on getting out of college all that college has to offer to someone who doesn't have the intellectual chops to major in electrical engineering: a piece of paper that helps sustain membership in elite social circles.

Youtuber GaryVee who has exploded in pop culture recently is also strongly anti-college and believes the next economic crisis will be its death knell.

by Tom Ciccotta | March 18, 2019

Mike Rowe chimed in on the college bribery scandal this week, making the case that the cost of attending college is a bigger issue in the United States.

Actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin were amongst dozens of parents that were charged in connection with a fraudulent college admissions scheme that involved cheating, deception, and lies.

Now, Mike Rowe, famous for his television show Dirty Jobs, is speaking out on the scandal. This isn’t the first time that Rowe has spoken on the issue on college tuition and debt. This time around, Mike is directing his frustration at the exorbitant cost of attending college, especially the elite schools that were involved with the scandal.

You don’t have to be rich or famous to believe your kid is doomed to fail without a four-year degree. Millions of otherwise sensible parents in every tax-bracket share this misguided belief, and many will do whatever it takes to get their kids enrolled in a “good school.” Obviously, those who resort to bribery are in a class by themselves, but what about parents who allow their kids to borrow vast sums of money to attend universities they can’t possibly afford? What about the guidance counselors and teachers who pressure kids to apply for college regardless of the cost? What about the politicians and lobbyists who so transparently favor one form of education at the expense of all the others? What about the employers who won’t even interview a candidate who doesn’t have a degree? Where’s the outrage?

Rowe went onto to say that the cost of tuition has little connection to the actual value of the education received. Instead, the value is based on the perceived social value of the diploma that one receives when graduating from a university or college. The problem, according to Rowe, is that society has overvalued degrees, especially from certain elite schools.

The cost of college today has almost nothing to do with the cost of an education, and everything to do with the cost of buying a credential. That’s all a diploma is. Some are more expensive than others, but none of them reflect the character of the recipient, none are necessary to live a happy and prosperous life, and none of them come with any guarantees. And yet, the pressure we put on kids to borrow whatever it takes is constant, and precisely why tuition is so costly. It’s also why we have $1.6 trillion of student loans on the books along with a widening skills gap. That’s a bigger scandal, in my opinion.

Rowe has long been an advocate for trade and blue-collar skilled jobs. In many cases, these careers can earn similar salaries to those earned by college graduates.

Another scam:

Five California residents arrested in cheating scheme to obtain student visas for Chinese nationals

Quote:Quote:

Federal authorities arrested five California residents on Tuesday, accusing them of helping Chinese nationals obtain student visas by taking their English proficiency tests for them.

Authorities allege the scheme was facilitated by 23-year-old Liu Cai, who entered the U.S. on a student visa to attend UCLA.

There were over 40 students, “who took advantage of this scheme,” and who were able to attend top-ranked colleges, including UCLA, Columbia University and New York University, according to Homeland Security Investigations special agent Christopher Kuemmerle.

“We have so many students that are honest, that work hard to get into the university of their dreams and yet that spot might be taken by someone who cheats,” said Kuemmerle, who supervises the multi-agency Los Angeles Document and Benefit Fraud task force, which investigated this case.

The five arrests were among many that took place on Tuesday, as federal prosecutors also accused top chief executives, two Hollywood actresses and a legendary fashion designer of taking part in a separate, audacious scheme to get their children into elite universities through fraud, bribes and lies. Fifty people, across academia and college sports as well as a cadre of super-wealthy parents, have been charged in what prosecutors say is the largest college admissions scam ever prosecuted.

In the student visa case, a 26-count indictment handed down by a federal grand jury last week charges Cai, Quang Cao, Elric Zhang, Mohan Zhang and Samantha Wang with conspiring to use false passports, using false passports and aggravated identity theft as part of the scheme to impersonate Chinese nationals in order to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language exam.

To obtain a student visa, foreign citizens have to apply to study at a school authorized by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program. Many of those schools require foreign citizens whose first language is not English to certify proficiency in the language by getting a particular score on the TOEFL exam.

Cai is alleged to have paid for and registered 14 Chinese nationals, referred to only by their initials, for the exam over a one-year period in 2015 and 2016, according to the indictment. Cai, Cao, Elric Zhang, Mohan Zhang and Wang are alleged to have impersonated those citizens by using false, forged and counterfeited People’s Republic of China passports.

The passports were in the names of the foreign citizens, but bore the defendants’ photographs. The indictment alleges that Cao, of San Francisco, took at least four of the exams, Elric Zhang, of Los Angeles, took at least five, and Mohan Zhang, of Cerritos, and Wang, of Corona, took at least two each.

The sixth defendant — Tuan Tran, 33, who is alleged to have taken at least one TOEFL exam with a false identification document — is believed to be living in Taiwan. After the tests, Cai paid three co-defendants about $400 per test from his PayPal and Venmo accounts, authorities said.

“The imposter test takers were generally U.S. citizens of Chinese descent that spoke English well and that could breeze through the exam,” Kuemmerle said. “A lot of these associations were made at Chinese American social organizations.”

Based on fraudulent TOEFL exams, students were able to “cheat their way” into universities across the country, including UC Irvine, UC Riverside, Arizona State University and the University of Alabama, Kuemmerle said. However, a number of them were not able to successfully graduate.

“Some of them weren’t able to cut the muster, because that old adage, ‘If you’re cheating, you’re really cheating yourself,’” Kuemmerle said. “If they can’t match the language, they might not have the aptitude to do well in an American university.”

Last year, as UC Santa Barbara enrolled more students from China, professors complained about a lack of English skills. In the last decade, the University of California’s enrollment of international students has more than tripled. Chinese students’ campus presence has grown more than eightfold.

Faculty said they had pressed in recent years for international students to be better screened for English-language skills, concerned that a troubling number of Chinese undergraduates lacked college-level abilities in the language, even though admissions standards generally mandate that foreign students score at "intermediate" levels on the TOEFL exam.

Kuemmerle called Tuesday’s arrests the “first phase of the investigation.”

“At some point, we may make a decision to discuss directly with the schools certain individuals who we know cheated on the exam,” he said.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations, the State Department’s Diplomatic Security Service and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service’s Fraud Detection National Security Section are investigating the case.

The conspiracy count in the indictment carries a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison. The charge of using a false passport carries a maximum sentence of 10 years. Aggravated identity theft carries a mandatory consecutive two-year sentence.

“Hopefully this will deter others from even thinking about taking an examination on behalf of somebody who is trying to get into one of these schools from overseas,” Kuemmerle said. “We want to reserve those spots for honest, hard-working applicants who does his or her own test and doesn’t cheat the system.”

Jeez, its TOEFL. Its piss easy and even the top colleges' average score required is somewhere around 80 out 120. Why the fuck would you even want to cheat on that?

Even with no clue of the English language, a months study or paid tutoring, which will be much cheaper to do in China than paying someone in the US to take it, will get you that score.

Not disagreeing with you, but I have to ask: Does anybody in the USA believe in meritocracy anymore?

The USA is somewhere between "Hunger Games" and "Wheel of Fortune" for most people. Insane how ruthless and Darwinian things have become- one job loss, big medical bill, etc, can practically ruin a family overnight.

We're nearing a "Let them eat cake!" moment. The discontent is hot and palpable, like lava gradually filling a chamber before an eruption.

When average people have to read about CEOs using bags of cash to buy futures for their privileged children, futures that are totally inaccessible for the bottom 70% of the country, the chamber gets hotter and the pressure increases.

Eventually......

I'm going to offer an alternate perspective on this...

The cold hard truth is that most people spend money impulsively, are materialistic, can't save, don't want to live minimally, don't want to learn about finances, taxes, business or investing (they find it too boring or too hard), and quite simply don't want to put in the sacrifice and work required to improve their financial situation.

Lose your job? Why don't you have passive income coming from somewhere (investments) or a second income stream you can turn to to tide you over that you've been working on (online or some sub contractor work to see you through)? Have you been building up your skills to make it easy to find more work? Have you put the time in to understand the industry you're in and that it's a high demand industry?

Unexpected medical bill? Why don't you use your emergency savings that a responsible adult should have? (I will admit - some health problems are far worse than others and can be debilitating in all areas of life for an ongoing length of time e.g. Cancer, and my heart goes out to these people. But, most health problems are manageable and not chronic or long term in a debilitating sense)

When you are young (18 to say 27 or 28) - yes, these things can have a far bigger impact on you because you haven't had the time to build savings, knowledge, skills etc. You're definitely vulnerable when you're younger - no arguments there. But, after a certain age - the work you have been putting in in life should safe guard you from a lot of things if you live in the developed world.

Is the system f*cked in a lot of ways? Yes.

But, I know for 100% certain that any person (living in the West) can completely set themselves (and a future partner or family) up for life over a 10 year period if they actually put the work in and go through the boring, monotonous routine that it involves.

I don’t think Dr. Dre has a full understanding of the recent college admissions scandal. He would have been smarter to keep his mouth shut about his daughter getting into USC on her own.

Apparently Dre donated $70 million to the university. Sure, he is playing by the rules, so to speak, and he didn’t do anything illegal. But, it would be crazy to say that his huge donation had no impact on the admissions decision.

Quote:Quote:

Hip hop legend Dr. Dre took a jab at high-profile celebrities and other wealthy parents caught up in a recent college admission scandal while boasting about his daughter's acceptance into the University of Southern California.

"My daughter got accepted into USC all on her own," he wrote in a Saturday Instagram post. "No jail time!!!"

Dre, 54, the former member of the rap group NWA whose real name is Andre Young, has an association with the Los Angeles university. In 2013, he made a $70 million donation to the school for the creation of the Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation.

Lori Loughlin's Daughter Is First Student Under Criminal Investigation In Admissions Scandal

https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019-04-1...missions-0

Quote:Quote:

A third member of the Loughlin family - the most familiar faces in the recent college admissions scam - is now facing a criminal investigation, according to The Daily Mail. A daughter of Full House star Lori Loughlin, who recently plead not guilty to charges in "the largest ever college admissions scandal" is now the focus of a Department of Justice probe as to her involvement in the case.

Multiple sources have said that the actress’ daughter was on the receiving end of a letter from federal prosecutors in Massachusetts earlier this month regarding the investigation. The letter said that Loughlin's daughter was the subject of an investigation that could result in criminal charges.

One person who saw the letter said: "It is a not-so-veiled threat. [The US Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts] is making it pretty clear that they have evidence that very strongly suggests she knew of the illegal plot."

The tone of the letter was described as "ominous". A source said that these letters are an indication that prosecutors are working to obtain evidence and possibly pursue additional charges and defendants.

Another source interpreted the letter as clear telegraphing of more charges to come: "It is clear that some students are going to be charged."

Sources said that five additional people whose children received letters all refused a plea deal and filed a plea of not guilty, as Loughlin and her husband have done. Loughlin's daughters, as part of the scam, pretended they had previously been on crew teams in order to gain preferential treatment as potential athletic recruits. To sell that idea, they posed for photos on ergometers, offering the suggestion that they were aware and willing participants in their parents' plan. Loughlin daughter Olivia also reportedly had scam ringleader William Rick Singer's team fill out her college applications for her.
