Glad you asked. I worked for big media for decades. A lot of the reporters are frustrated (or failed) fiction writers. They approach their stories that way. Instead of getting to the truth, they "craft" a heart-tugging narrative.

Back in the old days, reporters were hard-nosed, hard-drinking cynics who said things like "If your mother says she loves you, verify that." They wrote about street culture because they often lived it.

Then it became a pink-collar profession and a playground for rich kids. That's when the field changed. You now have people writing who grew up in wealthy suburban towns and only know the outside world from what they learned in textbooks.

Their background is no longer forged starting out on the "Cops and Courts" beat, where they witness reality. It's formed in places like the Iowa Writers' Workshop or the Hopkins Writing Seminars.

So we get writers who live in the fictional/Hollywood world where it's always 1954: Minorities are always oppressed, gays are constantly being bashed, girls don't get encouraged to excel in school, and women are chained to their houses (when they're not being beaten by their chauvinist husbands).

Anyone who looks at actual statistics knows this worldview is false. There are countless successful minorities, girls do far better in school than boys, and acceptance of gay people is widespread.

In conclusion, the media doesn't think all of this is strange because to them it isn't. These are people living in a fictional fantasy land, not the realists who called bullshit on Morton Downey, Jr. in 1989.

I have a story related to this.

I myself was picked up by the (all black) police in a small town in Georgia (where I'm from) once because they had gotten a call that a white boy was about to get murdered in the area where they picked me up. The police were nice to me and they were there to protect me but they were protecting me from a violent racial hate crime that was about to be perpetrated against me for just walking around. To give an idea of the gravity of what they seemed to have thought was going to go down, I had not one but three police cars with armed officers inside appear in front of me where I was on the sidewalk to pick me up. Prior to their appearance, I had seen a group of black guys around my age down the street from where I was who started shouting at me and throwing soda cans hard at the ground and stuff, probably to intimidate me.

I was in high school at the time and was just visiting the town because my mom was doing some kind of seminar there. She dropped me off on the main street so I could hang out there until she got done. There was a railroad track that ran through the center of town and I literally walked onto the wrong (black) side of it. That's why the police were called. After patting me down and everything, the police took me to the station and left me sitting in the back of the car in the parking lot for a little while before taking me way out of town and dropping me off in the parking lot of a nursing home where the staff refused to help me or let me use a phone because they had just seen me get dropped off by the police.

I walked for about half an hour along the side of the highway until I got to a Popeye's chicken restaurant on a corner that, just by pure chance, my mom happened to drive around about 20-30 minutes after I had arrived and decided that there was no point in wandering any further. It was lucky that she saw me and picked me up because she never answered the phone back then (ambitious working mom and all) so I might have been stuck outside of Popeye's after they closed that evening if she hadn't driven around that corner.

Hate crimes and racism are real in the US but it is usually not white people causing them. Maybe it was like that in the 1960s but I was born in 1992 so I was never part of any of that crap and, for at least as long as I've been alive, I've only ever known the perpetrators of racially motivated aggression to be black and hispanic. I'm sure there must be white people committing racially motivated crimes out there somewhere but I've never seen it and I'm from the South. I hate to say that because I don't want things to be this way but it is what it is and pretending that it isn't will only put you in unnecessary danger.

Definitely looks like a serious thing made by people who are intelligent and competent enough to track down and locate a specific black guy, in a specific place in a country that is 3000 miles wide, at a specific time, and pick him out of a crowd of millions of other black guys, any one of whom could be mistaken for him on a dark winter night at 2am on a Tuesday when everyone is covered up from head to toe to protect themselves from the icy wind chill in one of the coldest major cities in North America.

Without doubt, this does not look like something he's making up. Those Crayola marker doodles could only have been done by someone capable of organizing the logistics for and planning such an attack so well that they were not even caught on any security cameras in one of the most heavily surveilled neighborhoods of one of the most heavily surveilled cities on the planet.

The fact that the envelope doesn't have any real address on it but is weirdly stamped and got delivered to him anyway, as if the Post Office would actually mail something that looked like that and not immediately call it in to the authorities and/or just throw it away for being illegible and not having an address on it, shows just how cunning and elusive these hateful victimizers are. They are truly criminal geniuses. Will these monsters ever be caught? Will we ever see justice? How could anyone even suggest that Jussie Smollett and his manager are just lying race pimps like Al Sharpton, Don Lemon, and Jesse Jackson? When will we stop victim blaming?

Windchill only affects things that sweat; and by carrying something around a shaking it, it will prevent transition to the frozen state, even if the temperature continues to drop.
