Best Neighborhood in Los Angeles to live?

I know there is a major thread on Los Angeles on here but its long as fuck and looks pretty outdated. Anyway I'm 25, work for myself and make a good living. What is the best neighborhood in LA to live in?

Orange County? Anywhere where white people are the majority lol

^ Very insightful answer right there. "Lol".

I wrote a data sheet on LA this previous spring, and have kept it reasonably current with updates. Check here for some more info.

As for your question, it depends what you are looking for. Do you prefer chill bars or bigger nightclubs? Do you prefer white girls or more diversity? Are you going to prioritize things to do during the day (surfing, hiking, etc) or nightlife?

Its hard to really answer you without knowing what your preferences are. But I would say that one of the three circles that I mention on my sheet - Santa Monica/Venice, Hollywood/Weho, or Downtown LA - are your best bets. Unless you really prefer a more relaxed environment, in which cases places like Manhattan Beach or Huntington might be your cup of tea.

Los Felix, Koreatown, Redondo/Hermosa it if you’ve got the money, Manhattan Beach (but it’s not cheap)

OP what kinds of girls are you lookin to target?

SanMo/Venice/WeHo - mostly white girls

Hollywood proper - kinda mixed. Hollywood Blvd has lately gotten a bit ghetto but there's still good spots on Cahuenga and thereabouts.

Downtown LA - Latinas and Asians for the most part.

Manhattan Beach - white girls, but the scene there is small, skews a bit older and is very cliqueish. You might have a hard time breaking in.

Hermosa Beach - mixed, a bit of everything especially on the weekends

Los Feliz/Echo Part/Silverlake - hipsters, mostly white but some other ethnicities as well.

Don't know much about OC but LA county offers a bigger variety of interesting neighborhoods to choose from for sure. Additionally if you get bored of where you live the other areas aren't terribly hard to get to. So I'd suggest LA over OC for those reasons.

Don't really have a preference in terms of ethnicity, Is a neighborhood like Sherman Oaks to far from the action? I work for myself on a laptop so I don't have to adhere to the typical 9-5 schedule

Best Neighborhood in Los Angeles to live?

I've lived in the SF Bay Area my whole life and have been down to LA plenty of times but visiting for a week/weekend is much different than having to live somewhere everyday. Would getting an Airbnb for a month to figure out which neighborhoods I like be a good idea?

Beverly Grove. Right in the middle of where you need to be. Good ratio of hot/young/attractive girls that will put out. Younger vibe, lots of places to hang, socialize, etc.

I live in Beverly Grove. Rent is pretty pricey tho.

2k- studio
2.5k - 1bdr
4k- 2 brd/2ba

My sex life has never been better.

Admitedly, your monthly expenses go up big time. everything is about 25% more expensive compared to burbs.

Yeah I wanna be close enough to the action but kind of want to ease my way into it for the first year I'm out there. & I don't mind paying over 2k but I don't wanna fuckin live in a tuna can

You won't live in a tuna can. The advantage of LA is that apartments are generally bigger for the price, unlike in SF or NYC. Even studios are usually ~500 sqft, a 1 bedroom will be 700-1,000 sqft.

DVY's median prices for Beverly Grove are accurate. For a 1BR, probably subtract $500 for a crappier place and add $1k for a really nice place. For $2,500 you'll have a decently nice spot walking distance to cafes/food/nightlife. Just do your research and don't take the first spot you find, there's a ton of variability here and you can occasionally find gems. I've typically considered Beverly Grove part of Weho, thought I understand why people can also think of it as a separate neighborhood.

Sherman Oaks is pretty far from the action from my perspective, but it really depends how often you plan to go out to party hard. If you're only going out once a week or less, it's probably fine given that you will save a lot on rent & expenses (for $2k there you should be able to get a nice 1BR with pool/jacuzzi/gym). Uber is ~$20 each way at night to Hwood/weho and you can still pull with good game (though it is harder). A car is also basically a necessity in the Valley unless you live right on Ventura. Nighttime is mostly sushi spots and low-key bars/lounges.

Traffic is a real bitch, so you have to find the aspects of life you want.

I wanted a
-young upscale area
-walking distance to store/gas-station/7-11
- near shops/restaurants
- close to nightlife (10 mins in uber)

I have girls call me all the time, because I am in the area. Sometimes they stop for drinks or a J.

Also, 10 mins (nightlife rule) is about how patient girls are. So if you are close by, its easier to sell. Traffic can be 2 hrs from DTLA to the valley sometimes.... A good tool to use to help with this is walkscore. Try to stick to neighborhoods with walk scores above 80.

Id write down a list of stuff you find important and that try to fit that all in...alternatively choose get an airbnb for a week in various spots and test it out.

If you can work from anywhere remotely then there are better neighborhoods than Sherman Oaks for a 25 yr old dude. Pick one of the aforementioned ones instead.

Depends on what type of person you are.. What celebrity do people say they remind you of style and looks wise? so we can better assist you...

Ive chilled with DVY and he can get into the hot spots which is hard for baddies... So don’t listen to him hahaha But if you’re above average/ goodlooking, medium bank roll I would say Los Feliz/Echo Part/Silverlake.. Pharrell and others frequent my local hotspot in silverlake (models, insta models, USC chicks, euro chicks, stylist etc...) Silverlake is becoming the alternate for celebs that want to just chill and have a night out without the lights...

If you’re a repped LA member hit me up for the spot .. My pull rate back to the crib at this spot is about 25 percent.. But then again I stay around the corner so logistics is key...Plus I bounce to the afterhours spot downtown...

100% nightlife.

Rn its kind of annoying actually because I have drunk girls calling me all days of the week at strange hours.

Furly, what's your budget?

A lot of these locations given are mighty expensive.

I highly recommend North Hollywood. You can get a 1 bedroom apartment here for $1500 a month with a garaged parking spot. The neighborhood is very walkable and the bar scene is lively and above all affordable. You can even take the red line into downtown or Hollywood if you need to. An uber from Hollywood is about $25 when the subway closes if you want to drink with tourists who think celebrities go out to those places. Logistics are great as you're about 20 minutes from everything by car and on a good day about 40ish minutes from the west end.

There are lots of young working professionals around. Lots of girls and the social scene is active when you start making friends.

Bars include Idle Hour, Skinny's, and a slew of other places as you get into the NoHo business district. Again, all walkable.

There's also a very large park near the freeway which has oodles of hot chicks running around and people who just hang out. The police have even gotten better at clearing out the homeless dregs making it very safe.

I spend a lot of time in the area and love it. Highly recommend it.

In my opinion, if you are 25, you should live in these hoods if you are concerned with having fun, drinking and hooking up with girls:

1. Beverly Grove- Has it all
2. Venice- Great scene still. Day is better than night. Good 20s party scene though.
3. Los Feliz- Quiet, but located in a great area with lots of girls and things to do.
4. West LA- If you have to do the Westside, stay here.
5. Silverlake- Very hipstery, but its still fun and the girls definitely put out.

If you have to live in the Valley, its Studio City or nothing else. You will get a weird stare from girls in most venues if you say you live in North Hollywood. I mean that little downtown district is cool and all, but its not geographically desirable.

Santa Monica- too touristy, pricy and girls are cunts
Beach cities (Manhattan / Hermosa)- fun but it will get old really fast and its a bubble
Downtown- too dirty, girls aren't that hot
Highland Park- Its gentrifying and people say its cool, just don't live there unless you are into Rock en Espanol. Its out of the way.
Pasadena- Good if you are married with 2 kids.
Brentwood- if you are into basic white girls and are rich and a sales guy, its probably good. Otherwise, not.

Drazen, cordially disagree.

I drop that I live in North Hollywood all of the time and absolutely no one cares. Like I said in the San Fran thread, the moneyed circles I roll in don't care about the neighborhood you live in especially since the average house price here is $1mil +.

It's not 1997 anymore when this part of the valley was indeed crappy. All of those locations you posted are the most expensive in the city.

Find a place where it's affordable and filled with young people where you can walk to the bars. North Hollywood fits the bill and leaves you with accessibility to Hollywood if you really need to be in that scene.

Especially if you're in your 20s. From someone who took the bad advice of this forum to spend his 20s living in the most expensive parts of cities, don't do this. You'll regret it by the time you're in your 30s when you have nothing to show for the past 10 years.

Find that happy medium of affordable, young people, and nightlife. Key note that most of the women that live in places in the West End are piled into apartments with like 3 to 5 people!

How big is the livable area of North Hollywood though? Just the NoHo Arts district? I mean with the Metro, its not too bad. I drove through there about a month ago, it was pretty crappy in the area I was in (ate at Skafs which is awesome). But that area wasn't the best, it was very industrial with a bunch of car repair stores. I was in the NoHo Arts district about a year or so ago to drop off someone, I was semi-impressed with that area though where the theatre (or something was).

I'm of the mindset to live in a more ghetto apartment in a good area, especially in your early to mid 20s. If I was buying a property, then yes, something like that would make more sense to me, but if you are merely renting and looking to experience more of LA, the party scene, and stereotypical LA Living, I think living closer to the mid-city area would be a lot better. I mean how long does it take to get to a beach from NoHo? Beverly Grove is pretty doable if you want to hang at the beach in the summer and take an uber to get there. From NoHo, it seems like a pretty big trek.

I would feel a little disconnected from most of LA proper in day to day life. You will spend most of your time in NoHo/Burbank/Glendale (talking about non-nightlife time) versus if you lived in the middle of Beverly Grove, where your day to day life would be centered around Hollywood/MidCity/etc.

Had to google, Skaf's is way out there. I agree, that part of "North Hollywood" is indeed car repair places and little Mexico. I go up there for junk yards for my car [Image: lol.gif]

The Arts District area is what I am referring to.

Rents here are pretty good. This screenshot refers exactly to the area i'm talking about. [Image: attachment.jpg41095]

I've actually walked pretty much that whole square. Talking about a 10-15 minute walk give or take from corner to corner. The area west of Lankershim and east of the freeway is nothing but multistory apartments which are super affordable.

For the nightlife scene, i'll provide an honest assessment.

Skinny's and El Zorro are really the only clubs in that walkable square. El Zorro especially, I would only go there if you speak fluent spanish. Skinny's talent is hit or miss. However, the cover to get in is $5 and the drinks are priced accordingly. Seriously can't beat that if you want to "untz untz untz". I've never been to El Zorro, but this post on Yelp says "This place is super paisa. Fat 50 something ladies in skimpy outfits and short Mexican men in with cowboy boots, gold belt buckles, and cowboy hats." take from that what you will.

My social circle however has zero interest in the club scene anymore and we're all between the ages of 23-35 (roughly the demographic of NoHo). When we do go out it's either to Idle Hour, the Federal, District Pub, or even Pyramido (for Hookah).

Idle Hour is straight up the best bar in NoHo. The music is so low you can actually hold a conversation. Drinks are very affordable and the back patio is massive. I've seen some really good looking chicks go there in groups that are very approachable.

The other places are good as well. Again, same scene. Very low music, affordable drink prices, and decent talent.

The places that are a bit outside of my walkability radius that get honorable mentions are NoBAR, the Bullet Bar, and the Goodnight. All good, but I hate Uber'ing if I have to even if it's only $8.

I have a dog so the only beaches I go to are Leo Carillo in Malibu (45 minutes) or Huntington (1 hour). Downtown hollywood is realistically only 20 minutes (from your garage to parking) away on a bad day. I prefer to take the Metro. It is a bit disconnecting from those places you live, but I'm looking for affordable CoL and nightlife which North Hollywood has in spades. Ubering is pretty damn affordable too, but I hate paying for that and clubs aren't my thing anymore. My apartment complex and friends who own a house have a pool which I take advantage of.

From a grand overview, I believe North Hollywood gives you the best balance of affordable CoL, nightlife, public transit access to Hollywood/DTLA, demographics, and quick access to the freeways.

My thinking is: why go to a bunch of really over priced mediocre bars when you really only need a couple affordable bars with a very active crowd.

Send me a PM mate and i'll get you a beer at Idle Hour next time you're in the area.

DVY knows his shit in Los Scandalous.

For what it's worth I loved DTLA when I lived there. Was walking to Standard and that general strip whenever. Lots of good low key spots for food, drink and fun. Overall found better living deals there than elsewhere in the city. Good views for sure from my old spot.

Arts district is coming up since I was there.

All my friends that lived in the valley would crash my place till 4 after a night out to avoid traffic.
