Objectively, I don't think too many people outside of the far-left echo chamber truly disliked/loathed George H. W. Bush. People forget that more than a few default Bush voters in 1992 voted for Ross Perot over various disappointments, including the sense that leaving Saddam in power was a mistake. It didn't follow that they preferred Clinton. We're talking 18% of the electorate voting third-party in an election where Clinton only beat Bush by 6%.

Objectively, I don't think too many people outside of the far-left echo chamber truly disliked/loathed George W. Bush, for that matter. In hindsight everyone agrees that Iraq was a mess, but people forget that it was actually fairly popular and that even before 9/11, the possibility was widely discussed and Saddam was a topic in the debates. I don't think anybody was under any deep illusions about what they were voting for at the time.

Some research puts "activist progressives", the kind of people who care about gender-fluid pronouns and show up to march at anti-war rallies, at 8%. They're loud out of proportion to their numbers. Other people get mad at whoever's in the White House temporarily but then calm down and would be star-struck to have a beer with whoever they were cursing last year. I suspect a lot of older regular folks actually view the Cold War as a simpler time and feel some warm nostalgia for those years. The media just says what it needs to say to keep people watching. People want to see nice things about an old man they remember fondly.
