Hang glider instructor forgets to strap in tandem passenger

I read somewhere that the human body is actually quite a lot stronger than we think, it's just that we can't consciously access this strength, since it would end up damaging our own body.

It's reserved for emergency situations like this one, where surviving is all that matters.

His body and subconscious went "Torn tendons? Who the fuck cares! Use emergency override, remove all limitations, increase power level to 100%".

It's like those stories about car accidents where an average woman is suddenly able to lift up a car in order to save her child.

While I accept it to be true that most people are stronger than they think they are, I have some reservations about it as anyone who has found themselves stuck under a barbell may understand!

I can recall a couple of times from my stupid teenage days, me bench-pressing alone in the garage and getting stuck under the bar. The first time it happened, I didn't even think to shift the weight to one side and let it drop and shuffle it down your body (like everyone who gets stuck has to!). I just did it by chance and survived.

But here's the thing, if I had un-tapped reserves of strength that my body was holding onto for life or death situations then this was the time to use it! My adrenaline was spiked and I thought my number was up, but nevertheless no way could I re-rack that weight to safety again. And this was just a weight that I'd been repping out on ok for a few sets just minutes previously, but now I was out of gas.

Also, I've fought people in fights (both real and gym) and could have used those untapped reserves quite a few times where I genuinely thought there was a good chance of me being killed (early Judo days where I was full of ego!).

I'm not saying it isn't a thing (it is), just that it probably applies more to untrained people, housewives and old grannies etc. Gym-goers and martial artists have probably pushed themselves close to their physical limits a few times already and may not have a lot left to give in these predicaments that they don't already know about.

It's way more than just adrenaline. It's some area of the brain that regulates this level of super strength (basically summoning all of our motor units) so we don't damage ourselves. Certain mental patients can regularly show off such strength feats because their damaged brains cannot regulate it.

You mean retard strength?

You want to know the only thing you can assume about a broken down old man? It's that he's a survivor.

There is a game in Phuket nightlife scene where if you can hold onto a pull up bar for 2 mins you get a free bottle of scotch.

No one ever makes it.

Perhaps the issue is motivation, not ability.....
