Norwegian Warship struck an oil tanker

It's been revealed that whoever was on the frigate bridge actually though the oil tanker was a terminal on land (which it had just left). They also thought the people on the radio were on a different ship altogether. This still leaves the question of why they just crashed into the tanker - I guess they didn't expect it to move, on the other hand I wouldn't think a giant tanker (250 m+) moves that fast.

Interesting. That doesn't make much sense. I wonder if there's substance use involved.

Tankers actually travel pretty fast considering how large they are. As long as they're not trying to really save on fuel, most generally travel at about 20 knots. Slower for some, slightly faster for others. As others have stated when you get something that large moving that quickly through water it takes quite some time to change course and especially to come to a stop. They have the right of way because of this.

Even if the military ship were on a top secret classified uber important mission, the physical realities involved mean that the warship should've stood down/changed course and given them the right of way. Someone massively fucked up and it wasn't the tanker.

The way I remember the rules of the road is that the vessel constrained in it's ability to maneuver has the right of way. That would be the tanker. Same as a tug towing a barge, a sailboat, a boat engaged in fishing, a vessel constrained by it's draft, etc. I am around cruise ships sometimes and I give them the right away. They would only realize they put me under if someone noticed a scratch in the ships paint.

There is a saying among us Norwegians sailing on the coast.
If it's gray, stay away.

The issue here is the Navy, usually follow their own rules, not the rules of the sea which all others ship does.

The cause of this is Purley human error, and the consequence of the crew responsible, probably newer gonna get out in the open.

Embarrassing for all seafarers in oure country. luckily the former navy sailors I have worked with, got kicked off the ship. strange thing with merchant marine vessels. If you fuck up, you loose youre job.

I obviously only speek for Norwegian navy, other countries I have no knowledge about ?‍♂️

Not pluralizing every second word.
