That's my aunt. Childless, worked in film for a long time, into a bunch of arty crap, now lives alone and drinks while dreaming of a socialist utopia. One of several reasons I cut her out of my life.

I've seen some female acquaintances go down this path. It's sad. Yet it seems higher numbers of men end up alcoholic and destroy their lives. That's even sadder.

Thanks to posts / medical references in this thread and being aware of how I feel after alcohol, I'm limiting it to .. as low a frequency as possible. Right now, closer to a couple drinks every two weeks, where I had been several drinks a few times a week. For antioxidants, I'd rather drink coffee (decaf largely), take raw cacao, cruciferous vegetables, and quality supplements than drink alcohol for supposed 'health' benefits with the negative side-effects.

I think Netflix had a 'Truth about Alcohol' documentary which was very eye-opening.

After about a week without it, I don't seek it out. I also want to maintain a leaner physique so reducing empty calories is critical. I have to watch for corresponding cravings like sugar. Many heavy drinkers have candida infections (I think already mentioned?) so abstaining from sugars and alcohol is healthier for your body and mind.

P.S. The glorification of drinking in popular culture - which women consume and take part in - is partly to blame. You tell someone 'alcohol is hurting you' and they act like you're crazy. Denial.

It's funny this pops up. Its a bit off topic but I'm coming closer and closer to the conclusion that if you're a woman who hasn't had kids or have kids that are given government assistance, you shouldn't be allowed to vote.

Too many crazy alpha widows/baby mamas/incel feminists out there fucking up America

BTW, one unique appeal alcohol has for women is it gives them plausible deniability to engage in sex for its own sake. Everyone knows women lose their inhibitions when they drink. The fact of the matter is that most women are very aware of this and deliberately drink to quiet their inner slut-shamer. As they get older, the drinking can be used to drown out the sense of humiliation that comes from settling for booty-call service when they really want (but know they can't get) commitment. Older women's self-pity only lowers their SMV more, though, so it's a vicious cycle.

I already see a lot of women turning into "Cool Wine Aunts" before the age of 25. Lots of women who are holding out for their own billionaire Chad.

Honestly I don't care if "Doctors" claim wine is good for you. Last time I tried drinking a bottle I got heart palpitations (almost every wine bottle contains sulphites, other preservatives and sometimes even arsenic). Only way for wine to be healthy is if you made it yourself and you know what's going inside it.

It's funny, I'm 35 and I look at pictures of girls my age that I knew in their youth and I don't think too much of their aging until I see pictures of my mom at 35. Girls today are aging FAST. Between drinking, diet, stress, lifestyle, promiscuity, they're getting worn alot quicker. Granted, the same can be said for many men as well.

People in the west just have an overall sense of purposelessness. Like we're in a collective existential crisis. I think that's what's driving alot of this.

Booze causes more deaths than opioids in the US:

In 2016, when there were 64,000 deaths in the US from the drug epidemic, there were 90,000 from alcohol (including accidents and homicides caused by inebriated people, as well as direct effects, mainly cirrhosis of the liver). Cigarette smoking is estimated to cause 480,000 deaths a year.

Opioid Nation

Of course, there are more people who drink alcohol than who use opioids, so let's not have another prohibition. The 18th amendment was almost as bad as the 19th.

While the article highlights problems. Its solutions are just as bad. The usual leftist bugbears like demanding more daycare, and putting a stop to income inequality and so on.

You can get the same effect without the sulphites/alchohol from grape juice or, better yet, grape seed extract (resveratrol) pills.

I can't claim to know all the causes or viable solutions but that's exactly what's going on. I also think it's led to political polarization and identity politics/tribalism as a "new religion". Being a keyboard-warrior today provides the same sort of meaning as those who once joined the crusades. It's just that today, instead of fighting for who runs Jerusalem it's determining whether manspreading should be criminalized and whether those who don't like Captain Marvel's smirk are misogynists. We're just living in a huge spirital void and there's no sense of true physical community anymore.

To be fair, a lot of those keyboard warriors are still fighting over who should run Jerusalem!

Maybe, but I'm sure there's a strip joint where the girls talk about uncle Kona and his home for wayward strippers.

The District of Columbia, less than 10 miles away from the Venable law office where Byrd was a partner, had the highest rate of death from alcohol in the country, according to the institute's analysis. Georgia and Alabama came in second and third.

Alabama, in fact, ranked third among states with the strongest alcohol control policies, as rated by medical researchers in a 2014 report published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

States can influence drinking – especially dangerous binge drinking – with policies such as taxes on alcohol and restrictions on where and when it can be sold."

Wait a second, Alabama has some of the strictest controls on booze, yet they're third highest in death rates. How did any of that government intervention influence the drinking? Looks like they collected a lot of blood money with little to show for it.

This is a societal (ahem - feminist enabled) problem that won't go away via a tax here or a regulation there. But yeah, we knew this.

Slight edit:

Missed this:

The new medical guidelines this year include a more aggressive alcohol screen-

Let this be a reminder for everyone to be VERY mindful whenever you talk to doctors and health care professionals. If they ask you whether you drink, and you say yes, they will ask how much.

They will then double whatever amount you tell them, since, after all, anyone who drinks is an alcoholic and all alcoholics lie.

It may sound paranoid, but according to friends in the medical field, this is how health care personnel are often trained. They take notes on what you say, which goes into a computer. Years go by and for some reason you're paying more than you should for life insurance down the road, a doctor is looking at you askance for some unrelated condition since, well, you're an alcoholic, he reasons. These are just a couple of possible costs based on "facts" you told them earlier without thinking.

If you are regular smoker, don't bother trying to hide it, but say you only smoke one or two cigars a year. That's all? Great. That means your tobacco use is ***ZERO*** not one or two cigars a year.

Be careful out there.

I had blood tests and liver panel this year. I've been drinking regularly for 7 years. Was honest with my doctor in the initial check up.

When the results came in, he asked "You drink at least a beer a day, right?"
"Usually, yes."
"It looks like your liver has never even heard of alcohol."

Lucky me I suppose. Definitely not gonna take it as a challenge though.
