Fitness - who are the best to learn from in 2018

Hi!

I watch some Mario Tomic videos, which I like pretty well but I'm also finding that I want more saturation and other good sources to help excel with being awesome at my health.

I'm definitely struggling to find effective or interesting audio books to load on my audible.

Would you guys say if you think reading forums such as bodybuilding.com or watching videos is the most effective? What other recommendations can you provide?

I'm open for books, forums, best YouTube channels, and other sources.

Any transformations or inspirational stories you would like to share? That would be awesome. I'm a bit out of shape and I've been struggling for consistency at being super fit for the longest time. I am going from decent shape, to average, to slightly overweight, fluctuating in this zone every year or 2. I want to get this handled this time for the long term, to get the habits and excel.

Thanks!

I like Jim Wendler, Joe Defranco, and Lyle McDonald. Almost never disagree with anything they put out.

I advise old Marthin Berkhan posts (leangains.com) & Andy Morgan (rippedbody.jp). Both are proponents of intermittent fasting and short, powerlifter based workouts.

More information is rarely better. You can't really go wrong with Greg Nuckols or any of the above listed but it depend on what you want to do. Just go to the gym and do something every day, even if you have to go at an ungodly hour.

Barbell medicine with Dr Jordan Feigenbaum and Dr Austin Baraki.

Both are medical doctors and competitive powerlifters. They both squat over 600 lbs, bench over 400 and deadlift over 600 (Jordan over 700) at a 200 lbs bodyweight. They read the scientific litterature on training, nutrition, pain and are really up to date. Always solid information. No bro science, no bullshit. They are strong and jacked, because they train smart. Nowadays it's easy to train stupidly with bad programming and inaccurate information.

They provide information on strength training, training for hypertrophy, nutrition, weight loss, pain/injury management, general health...

Alan Thrall is a member of their team.

Barbell medicine has a forum and a youtube channel.

Something I hate is watching tips from 20yo dudes who take steroids. At almost 40, my stomach ain't as sculptured as when I was young.

I wonder if using the Starting Strength + Intermittent Fasting would be ideal.

Go back in time and read the successful people who gave advice before the invention of steroids. Steroids and modern muscle mags / social media changed the game completely -- turned everyone into a fraud.

Besides guys who are mentioned often, like Jeff Cavaliere or Mark Bell, I really like John Meadows, especially his videos with Jeff Nippard. Meadows has a really smart and unique approach to bodybuilding, while Nippard focuses on scientifically-proven ways to achieve hypertrophy. Meadows has obviously been on gear for decades, and Nippard still competes as a natural bodybuilder. I like the balance.

Has anyone read Tom Brady's new book - TB 12 Method.

I was thinking about going out to his school to get some training live.

Cheers!

Jeff Cavalier - Good source for how to perform exercises in a correct manner
Chris Jones - Some videos are a bit of bro science I think but there is a lot of value you can take from listening to him as well. Has some really fun and good work outs
Markus Berkhan - Mostly just about intermittent fasting
Rhonda Patrick - A PhD chick who knows a lot about nutrition

A great website is:
http://www.examine.com

Just type in something like "zinc" and you'll get a whole list on studies and how zinc affect other things and the level of evidence etc.

I went on Jeff C wesite. Has anyone tried his online programs?

Lot's of recommendations here that I didn't know about.

No one likes M. Tomic?

I also thought bodybuilding.com was a great place to learn.

I don't like programs since everyone has a different body and distinct needs. I'd study several approaches/way to train from different trainers and make my own program.

I do mostly compound exercices (pullups, chin ups, bench press, dips, squats, deadlifts, hanging leg raises) with a few isolated exercises (bicep curls, shoulder lateral raises, diamond push ups (triceps) calf raises). I think that's the best way to get strong. Avoid machines except calf a raise machine.

Try and experiment different exercises and ways to train and you will eventually find what works best for you.

Thanks for the tips. Do you ever get some expert feedback about how to set up your plan? With a coach, you would get objective feedback, or are you doing this all on your own?

For example if you want the Brad Pitt :"Troy" Body type, do you know how to get that type of build?

When I see some of the massive beasts on the coaching sites I think that I don't want that kind of a build.

I'm doing this all on my own. For the Brad Pitt body type, I'd go with a lot of compound exercises with some HIIT cardio and watch your nutrition (low carbs high fat medium/high protein works well).

Yeah being too big isn't what I want either. I focus on being strong and lean (10-12% bodyfat).

That body type is more of a calisthenics with some weights supplementation style than a gym body to be honest. Getting a body like that is going to require hardcore diet changes most likely as really that's what that body is, super low body fat and some muscle.

You might as well follow Kinobody's Greek God programme then. Apart from the lack of emphasis on legs it's not a bad programme and would be a lot more effective for creating that kind of body than something like Starting Strength because of the emphasis on movements that build certain bodyparts that are more important for aesthetics like incline bench.

And I'd say Pitt in Troy looks to have a fair amount of muscle, probably somewhere in the region of 16 inch arms, 44 inch chest at 10% bodyfat - calisthenics won't get most people there unless they're going to do very advanced stuff like planch push ups and even then you might as well just use weights as it's faster and simpler.
