'Oumuamua -- alien probe? Astronomers think It's possible.

On October 19th, 2017, the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System-1 (Pan-STARRS-1) in Hawaii announced the first-ever detection of an interstellar asteroid, named 1I/2017 U1 (aka. ‘Oumuamua). In the months that followed, multiple follow-up observations were conducted that allowed astronomers to get a better idea of its size and shape, while also revealing that it had the characteristics of both a comet and an asteroid.

Interestingly enough, there has also been some speculation that based on its shape, ‘Oumuamua might actually be an interstellar spacecraft (Breakthrough Listen even monitored it for signs of radio signals!). A new study by a pair of astronomers from the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) has taken it a step further, suggesting that ‘Oumuamua may actually be a light sail of extra-terrestrial origin.

The 'Oumuaua asteroid that came through the solar system last month looked soooo much like an alien probe! Ridiculous that nobody in authority is willing to even look at the evidence.

- Came from another star as just happened to zip right past the Sun in such a way as to accelerate

- Changed course -- speeded up -- consistent with solar sail

- Long and skinny, like a tube

- Stopped rotating on the way away from the sun

Come on. Let's just admit it. That was the big moment. Alien civilization. But we totally missed it! Haha. What an anticlimax.

It's probably just an asteroid shaped like a turd. They couldn't find any radio signals coming off it, and it's unlikely a probe would be that massive. Plus it's speed means it came from Vega 300k years ago, I assume aliens wouldn't want to wait that long for their probe to return data and would have instead pushed it with a laser so that it'd be tearing through our system at like 0.2c

Lets for a moment believe this is an alien probe. Do we really want to meet a civilisation with bigger and better weapons than ourselves?

Maybe its Rama and we failed to rendezvous with it.

Yes but "asteroid shaped like a turd" isn't very exciting. So I'm gunning for "Alien Probe".

I am sure they passed us because they intercepted CNN broadcasting and decided that our planet is too gay for them.

Because it wasn't intended to transmit anything, it was only listening. Passive sensors. Just like the US Navy on its subs when they run silent.

So this much we know - aliens with more advanced technology now know about us. There are two possibilities:

1) We are all fucked.

2) This alien civilization will take down the Elite as Simeon has been predicting.

Let's hope #2 is right.

A third option, they are from a planet of female 10s where males became extinct millennia ago and their advanced sex robots just don't cut it.

Fucking Borg had to go and mess with first contact because Picard was on Workers' Compensation stress leave.

Yep.
When one considers the sheer amount of radio, TV & internet signals that have been inadvertently broadcast into the cosmos.

Everything from cheesy 1960's Batman to trashy 1980's pop music clips to all the random crap on the internet today...

No way any intelligent life form is touching this planet with a ten light year pole...

I think it would be the total opposite. Alien civilization would be fascinated by our trash TV. What else would they want? They're likely to have an abundance of any physical objects.

If they come here at all, it would be to commission Roasanne Barr to create a TV show for alien audiences. That's the only exportable product the human race will have in a complex Alpha Quadrant economy

More aliens who intend to remain absolutely silent and secret and have all the tech they want to keep it that way...

My personal theory on the Fermi paradox is this. Long before gaining the ability to do interstellar travel, intelligent life gains the ability to accurately simulate what may be out there. Since it's so much easier to do that rather than travel, they just don't bother. They just procedurally simulate the universe - and guess what - in an infinitely large universe, whatever you simulate is out there somewhere anyway. No need to travel.

The human race will do the same. Rather than build a starship and send cryo-frozen astronauts on a 100,000 year journey, we're just going to upload our brains to a sim and have the experience of it a million times without the fuss. As your brain experiences the joy of conquering Vega, you won't even hear the call of the muezzin next to the warehouse where you're stacked.

Dr Johnson rumbles with the RawGod. And lives to regret it.

Even more exciting would be an actual turd the size of an asteroid.

Old fake news

There have been cows and people abducted and annaly probed by aliens for decades, ever since science fiction was invented....

I wonder if this probe is shaped like a turd because it is an anal probe?

It could be it was meant for a larger planet with differently sized sentinent life forms. Maybe they didn't notice us because we are too small.

Was just about to post this.
What the hell is up with A.C.Clarke predicting stuff like Childhood's End and 2001 Space Odyssey. Guy knew something.
