Clothing and Gear Recommendations

If this is a duplicate of an existing thread, mods please delete. Otherwise, this could be a good resource for those who don't travel very often, and possibly for those of us who do.

I'll start with a few random products, brands, websites that I've found useful.

ebags.com has a good selection of luggage/backpacks. The ebags brand products are very good quality at mid range prices. If you want cheaper stuff just search the site for the best reviewed low price product you desire. They also have high end brands like Briggs and Riley.

New Balance shoes. Not the most stylish brand overall, but I have wide feet and they have shoes that fit me comfortably and last a long time.

Adidas boxer briefs. Comfortable and not very expensive.

Outlier. I just bought a pair of these trousers. Expensive, but they fit really well and they get rave reviews from many satisfied customers.

I'll have more to add later. I hope others will as well.

Merino wool boxers are very good also.

I liked my icebreaker merino underwear. Smartwool ones, not as much they were a little heavier. The smartwool merino low profile socks are a must for traveling.

If I was traveling for a really long time where you are sweating alot, I'd maybe recommend the V-necks, but for a week or so of travel, I'd just say go with a nice cotton V-neck/polo. I'm really into Uniqlo and Bonobos, personally.

I only wear Zara super slim fit t-shirts now.

Camper has cool, distinctive shoes that will last a long time. And women will notice.

If you want to dress smart, sperry makes brogue oxfords that rival some exclusive brands from only 100 bucks or so.

Banana Republic v necks, levi 527 jeans or h&m trousers.

I travel to 3rd world countries often, so these are my secret gears.

And I've befriended wealthy tourists and expats who can't tell that it's basically budget wear.

I use these since it won't break my heart if I get into a tussle or ejaculate on something and ruin it.

Girls always compliment. Always. And I'm short.

Try Asics as an alternative to New Balance. Similar design but improved style.

Upgraded my $1 open-toed, one-piece plastic no-brand sandals to $10 Japanese made imitation crocs with a rotating ankle loop. Not only do these bad boys save my toes from constantly being stubbed, but they’re secure enough for zip lines. I used to wear through $150 trainers once a month by wearing them around town. Then not be able to find my size abroad. Fuck that noise. I clean the mud off in the shower and they last for months. Do I have style. No.

As for brands of sneakers. It’s not about ASICS vs Nike so much as getting a model made for your arch type. Too many guys buy trainors based on looks. Not understanding there are three types of arches (flat, neutral, high) and usually they are coupled with cushioned or not. You can find your arch type by stepping out of the shower on a dark towel or inside of a cereals box. Heavy set guys or anyone over 175 usually needs cushioned. Road Runner Sports is the only reseller I’ve found that categorizes all their shoes by arch type. Plus they let you wear and return them. Once I find a series that works for me I tend to stick with it until it’s discontinued. Ordering online usually gives a choice of colors though if you want wide or double wide it’s usually the worst color.

I basically only buy clothes that offer at least some athletic performance. This kills almost anything with style. If you look at the golf section of stores like decathalon they often have tropical weight pants with two or four way stretch. Nice enough to wear for nightlife while traveling. Comfortable enough to hike or even sleep in if you have too.

For riding motorbikes I like a sun shirt with a zip up hood. Keeps the nasty rented helmet from direct contact while protecting me from the sun and dust all around. Solcool by ex officio is a good option. Unfortunately the elastic stretches out from being in the dryer and it looks like you’re auditioning for Last of the Mohicans.

The best underwear in the world is now Craft from Sweden. The quality of this underwear is benchmark.

My goto backpack is Cabin Max, designed to meet all airlines hand luggage specs. Never had it denied. It's ultra light as well and near indestructible.

Just me personally, I do not recommend anything from icebreaker. The materials are very thin and delicate. Everything I have bought from them underwear, socks, zip up base layer has holes in them other than their thicker hiking socks

I think I liked them because they were so thin. Made them a little cooler in the humid 95 degree NY weather.

“ New balance?!? Wait, are you Steve jobs? Are you Steve jobs, The billionaire founder of Apple computers? If not, you should never wear new balance, ever” - ryan gosling in “crazy stupid love.”

Buy a pair of sperry loafers. It’s my go to shoe for a 1 month trip on 6 continents. Can wear all day with shorts exploring a city. Can hike, can wear with jeans to a night club, and can wear to the beach. And damn are they comfy.

Plus one on Uniqlo. Good value for good quality with some style. Bonobos has been a mixed bag for me. I bought tech chinos which were very good if a bit expensive, but both pairs of jeans were a miss because of fit issues. I'd buy chinos from Bonobos in the future on sale only.

Haha, I'm not Steve Jobs, but I am an aging nerd who likes comfort over style when both are not on the menu. You hike in those Sperrys? I'd buy a pair, but I don't see an option for wider widths. I'm anywhere between EE and EEEE depending on the brand.

I might wear those Sperry for walking around if I didn't care what I look like but wouldn't wear those on dates. They're pretty ugly, no offence and not very manly looking.

I always pack 2 pairs of shoes. One light weight sneaker with decent support for walking around and a pair of oxford for dates.

Sperry Topsiders are classic and frat as fuck brahs. Definately recommended.

You can buy decent underwear from REI. They have a decent quality to their brand and it’s significantly cheaper than other activewear. I try to buy from them every May when they do the anniversary sale.

That's precisely the problem. Topsiders are seen as Juvenile these days. I've seen a lot of frat boys wear Topsiders with polos and shorts. Some of them even have their collars popped.

I'm curious as to what you wear on dates if you think wearing oxford is funny.

I wear Frye cowboy boots, Saint Laurent Paris Suede Wyatt boots, or Crockett and Jones Tetbury chukkas. During the warmer months I wear Sperry topsiders or loafers.

Oxfords are too formal unless you're meeting up after work and wearing a suit.

There are many types of Oxfords. From cloth to suede to leather. From Casual to formal to say that Oxfords are too formal tells me you haven't done your research.

I like the boots and chukkas you mentioned, they're manly. I don't think boat shoes like the Sperry's are bad shoes, they are comfy and easy to slip on but they are associated with frat bros and immature guys these days. If you don't care about that then by all means.

Not all sperrys are the classic “boat shoe” style with a crappy leather tie up lace.

My go to sperry shoes are the loafers.
