In retrospect after things go bad, it's easy to see what the good decision would've been (i.e. taking out hitler some time in the 1930s). What are some times in history where we probably nipped something in the bud that would've become a major problem/issue?

Cuban missile crisis. Kennedy didn't listen to the hawks in his cabinet and there was some Russian sub captain that decided not to fire a nuclear torpedo at the American fleet blockading Cuba, so that was a nuclear holocaust that didn't happen.

I'm not 100% sure if this is a great example, but the American defense of the Israelis during the Yom Kippur war in 1973. At what would be the end of the war the Soviets were about to rescue and arm the Egyptians and directly challenge the Israelis and the U.S. The U.S. then prepared to directly engage and fight the USSR and they ultimately backed down. If not that would have led to nuclear war between the USA and USSR if that escalated any more.

This wins the thread so far. I remember hearing about this in the news, but had forgotten since then. This is certainly a point where thing could have gotten much, much worse, but the problem was nipped, nipped in the bud.

Great thought Yeah Right... Obama seemed too busy to carry out one of his fundamental goals. Gun control... truly a miracle he over estimated himself.

A bit small scale but...in the 1970s we were paying off Islamic strong men in places like Lebanon to leave our people alone. After a time passed, he allowed the people to vote for another 8 years of Pinoche or a democracy. 44% voted for a continued dictatorship, which is a lot if you think about it (who wants a dictator?), and he relinquished power peacefully after losing this vote.
