Human spam attacking the forum from India

For the past several nights, we've had an intense spam attack from India. I've started to make it more difficult than them, but it's hard to eliminate entirely since these are human users and not bots. They are grabbing a new email address and IP address for each account.

If I can't solve this within the next few days, I will have to ban the entire country of India from accessing the forum. In the meantime, continue to report the spam so I can clean up the forum when I wake up.

Wow this really sucks. Is there really no other way? This would basically hand the trolls a foolproof way to shut down the RVF in any country.

Does anybody know what the purpose of the spam is? I've seen a bunch of it, and it's all sorts of nonsense with random numbers thrown in.

Link hijacking? Or coded messages being passed by Intel assets? Or something else?

Ya, banning India won't help. Any kind of proxy will defeat that, no full VPN needed.

Until the "from India" part of the title I thought this was going to be about Kona.

Why not a put stop on new memberships for a while? There seems to be an ever increasing influxe of increasingly stupid, lazy, uninformed pointless new threads started by some schmuck every day now. Every time I see a questionable thread title the last few weeks I look at he OP and see a user who signed up 2 days ago with 1-2 posts.

Two birds, one stone.

Those numbers are phone numbers with local digits, which charge you back for calling them.

I reported some of them and understand why you're considering doing this but if you do block the whole country, many others incl. me from India will have to say good-bye (not that anyone in the forum will bother).

Maybe you can try one or more of the following if you haven't already -
1. a CAPTCHA during new member registration
2. a limit on new threads per hour for all people
3. require email confirmation and explaining what value to the forum (from their email ID) they can bring before allowing to post first
4. giving authorisation to reputed members than mods to delete offending posts quickly

And therefore never send to know for whom the spam tolls; It tolls for thee.

Roosh, is there some type of flood control on the number of posts/threads that can be created within a certain time period? Some forum software allows you to throttle posting frequency to prevent this type of attack. Might be worth a look.

Minimum post count of 50 to make a thread?

Probably too complex to implement right here right now, but if anyone's looking for software development ideas, adapting Bayesian spam filtering (very successful for email) to forums would capture the crap given the similarly of the spams.

Yes these are also options. They would still spam existing threads but at least not clog the forum listing.

I made some changes. Let's see what they do tonight.

Just pay a 3$ VA to watch the board 24/7 for a little while and delete immediately. They will give up pretty quickly.

This. It will help screen out and test users who are or aren’t human. User registration is the first step to prevent the annoying spam flood.

1. Might hurt overall membership...You could require new members to enter a lot of trivial information for like "Favorite Pet Store" to sign up. If it takes a lot longer to sign up for an account they might go elsewhere.

2. You could require email confirmation of an account but then we would have to use some kind of real email address.

3. Allow for a period of 7 days to pass before allowing an member to post. Theyll eventually catch on probably but you could switch it around a bunch to fuck with them.

4. Charge 10 cents for signup

5. Allow reputable memebers to.moderate and delete posts of zero repped members. Obviously this one is tricky because they could delete descenting opinions

6. Block the first 10 posts of new users from the forum until verified

7. If they up end of being bots. Try the hidden field solution.

Do you have the StopForumSpam plugin installed?

Check out some of the IPs that have been spamming you against their database. If they are in there, it should do a good job.

For my site I was aware that I was getting scrapped (bot downloading content). When I looked into it more I found that about 75% of the traffic was bots. Loads of the IPs I was getting scraped by were listed on StopForumSpam.

Also check if you're getting hit by Tor nodes and do a WHOIS of the IPs. A lot of spam comes from Amazon IPs.

If you have problems with Amazon or Tor IPs and run a dedicated or VPS server I can send a script to block Tor and Amazon on the daily. If anything it will stop any lurking by The King of Begrade, who browsed RVF via Tor.

What about a waiting period of 6 months or something between registration and posting privileges? I dont think trolls have that level of patience.
