Starting up a bar

Anyone ever thought about or looked into this?

I think all the effort I put into chasing tail could be put into something more constructive... for the long term.
Travelling and going out 3 nights a week is all very well and good but I'm not looking at the bigger picture.
I'm tired of having to prove myself to women. I want them to come to me. Owning a bar will give me instant social status/proof and easy pickings with the hotest girls without having to even step out the front door. I want to be the man... not the guy at the bar.

Working as a DJ I see tons of Bar Owners.

I feel like with proper game knowledge you would kill.

Be prepared for:
- never having a weekend off
- possible DUIs
- avoiding becoming an alcoholic

To add to amistods list:

1. The staff will steal from you.
2. ALE are assholes.
3. If the wrong element takes over the bar, it's over.
4. In smaller towns, you'll quickly gain a reputation for being a manwhore. The females you employ will run their mouths.
5. Crowds are fickle. No matter how well you run it, it still may tank.
6. Whiny Russian immigrants may sit for hours in your establishment and complain about religion, stupid Americans, guns, ect. and run off paying customers.
7. Prepared to be there all the time.

I used to tend bar, and have contemplated opening one for entertainment, but it wasn't worth the headache. Besides, being around drunk people while you're sober is a super buzz kill.

Edit: And drama. Be prepared to deal with it everyday! From patrons but worse the staff.

There was a thread on this before:

Have you ever worked in a bar before?

I would do that first, get to know all the in's and out's before going down that road.

Which country are you thinking about opening up one in?

Another country would be a whole different ball of wax (so to speak).

Nice. Good thread on the subject.
I have not worked in a bar but I frequent bars/lounges in London which are owned by friends of friends. I dont know them well enough to ask for personal advice but from what I can see they are living the dream.
I would do it in instant if I had the capital upfront. Its a no-brainer especially when you get to a point where it can run itself and you can sit back and watch the profits and the chicks roll in.
Obviously most of us would have too much to lose. It's a huge gamble but if you can pull it off the lifestyle would be every players dream.
Keeping alcohol consumption in-check could be an issue.
Something I would probably look into doing with an experienced partner.

Make sure you play good music and have a small dance floor.

Make sure you have very good specials and drink prices.

Make sure you have a good layout / system. People HATE to have to wait an hour at the bar to get 1 beer. People enjoy being able to sit down with their friends.

Make sure you have pool tables and darts.

Just a few off the top of my head.

"I have not worked in a bar but I frequent bars/lounges in London which are owned by friends of friends. "

I would ask them for a job.

You want to know every single piece of the biz before getting in. Or else you will get robbed blind.

I am talking deliveries, staffing, payroll, every single goddamn job that needs to be done (bartender, bouncer, waiter, bar back, janitor etc), food, how to fix the ice machine etc.

Like I said on the other thread, "Graveyards are filled with guys who said, "Lets open up a hip nightclub!!!""

And make sure you actually want to spend your life in a bar.

Because that is what you will be doing; spending your life in a bar.

"It's a huge gamble but if you can pull it off the lifestyle would be every players dream."

Or every players nightmare.

Dash's tips are great and all but more importantly:

Make sure that you make money.

There is one local haunt, that I am sure Ali knows... One night I played there and the owner got so drunk that he literally fell out in to the floor. His 'girlfriend' took him home and I stayed while the two managers were doing money. There was a pile of cash on the bar they were sorting out, so they told me to get behind the bar to make shots. I ended up making 7!!! rounds of shots for the 3 of us over the next hour. Jameson, Jager, Goldschlager... well over $140 retail.

If you think they are that loose with the alcohol, how much of that cash you think gets reported to the owner?

I have since made friends with these guys and they still serve me free, even when I am not working there. Big props to G for showing me the importance of having a place on lockdown.
*Side not for those trying to get a bar locked down. To receive free drinks make sure that you order liquor (maybe wine). Bar owners allow for spillage on these items but keep more careful track of how many bud lights are sold.

Hey amistod, you feel like running through Athens this week? I've got a few days before starting my next adventure.
