Canadian clarinet player sues ex for deleting his scholarship offer

I feel very sad for this guy. He worked hard to get somewhere and then had his opportunity effectively destroyed by this thing. We really don't know what he lost in all this. He went through a lot of emotional turmoil after this "rejection." He also missed out on a chance to study with the teacher of his dreams and opportunities to network with other people. It's truly impossible to calculate what he lost here.

I doubt she will be able to come up with the money. Considering this, I do wonder why some type of criminal charges were not pursued for this.

That being said, though, the men also do deserve a little blame here. If I had really wanted a scholarship and had gotten a rejection email, I would have called him anyway. And if I was a teacher and really wanted a student to study with me, I would have called him as well. I am actually surprised that he believed the phony email, as it was coming from an address he didn't recognize.

Sadly, this says something about how lazy people have gotten with their communication nowadays. Maybe I am just old-fashioned--email is a very lazy form of communication. If either of them had simply gotten off their lazy asses and picked up the telephone, this situation would have been averted.

It's an interesting challenge trying to conceive of a just punishment for what she did to him.

If you were the judge and jury what would your sentence be?

How might this be handled justly in other parts of the world or times gone by?

Garnish her wages and make her pay child support for life to a single father she doesn't know.

Also serve as a warning to other women who don't take men's dreams seriously.

“The greatest burden a child must bear is the unlived life of its parents.”

Maybe he will get some cash if the girl has rich parents - at least it's some kind of punishment.

And it has worked out for him since he already joined a symphony orchestra. Some classical musicians can make serious money doing various private concerts and get invitations across the world to play. It's a small market compared to pop stars, but you have to remember that the clientele is both state sponsored as well as financed by some of the richest people in the world.

On the one hand I agree with you because there's no use crying over spilt milk and he'd better just learn from this and make the best of it.

On the other hand, at his level of expertise on his instrument, being in a symphony orchestra was a foregone conclusion.

Joining an orchestra is not the opportunity he had sought and of which he was unjustly deprived by that crazy dame.

Regarding classical musicians getting money...

As a (former) classical musician, my experience has been that the majority of classical musicians pay their bills and their studies by doing lots and lots of...teaching.

Teaching kids (who don't give a shit and come because their parents make them), teaching adults (who are never going to be more than mediocre), teaching church choirs (half of them can't stay in tune because they've no proper training), and all sorts of little gigs.

That rich clientele you speak of mostly endows money into various orchestras and chamber music organizations, etc., but you don't make too much money as a recitalist unless you're in the top 1% of your field.

Also consider that most classical musicians get at least a masters degree and often a doctorate so they have quite a bit more schooling to pay for. And the average debut age for classical musicians (singers for instance) is well into the 30s because that's how long it takes to become any good.

I think the "at least he will get some cash" argument glosses over the fact that he's been robbed of two things more precious than the money he MAY make: time and opportunity.

As another poster here said, classical musicians don't do it for the money because there ain't much. They don't do it for the girls because you're mostly too busy practicing in a stinky little practice room all day and night.

It's good to know how to play the clarinet. But sucks if you know it at the expense of getting played like a fiddle.

Does anyone else just find this bitch objectively evil? She needs to take a long walk off a short pier.

Who thinks of this shit? In a million years, this would never enter my mind to do to someone.

I assumed he was part of the 1% of classical musicians. I know the market in Europe which is far bigger than in North America. Still - she may have robbed him of the opportunity to strike it out bigger.

Something tells me that she's got one of those "Tiger Moms", and that the messaging growing up was not to come by high achievements honestly, but rather that it's OK to do things like this to people to get your way and the most important thing is winning.

Psychopathy begets psychopathy. She'll be a mom someday.

Psychopathy is what we're dealing with. And, she's a thief. She stole from him. And she's a liar. She lied to him to console him after his "rejection."

She's a straight-up criminal. I hope she goes to jail. She's dangerous to society.

It doesn't matter if his life dream is to sweep the fucking streets, if that's his dream, it's HIS dream. She's stolen something worth far more than money and she should do time for it. She can't even claim to be his wife and it's for the good of the kids or whatever; she's just plain wicked.

No but all they can do is seize her assets if she can't pay. She probably has very few valuable assets. At most he will get a few thousands.

At least she will have a bankruptcy on her record and everyone will know that she is a crazy thot.

Bankruptcies eventually get discharged and protection from creditors ends. Can't he go after her income/assets after the bankruptcy period expires?

I hope so.

I highly doubt it:

In the US, creditors can't go after pre-petition debts, that is debts that were incurred prior to the bankruptcy filing date, if they do they can get sued.

If they could collect on pre-petition monies that would defeat the whole purpose of getting a discharge in the first place(this is what you get after you take you financial classes, make your plan payments to your trustee, etc). Rules may be different in Canada, though.

This was exactly my point. She robbed him. She took his life's dream. It should be more than a civil case where she is sheltered and harbored by mommy and daddy's money.

This should be a criminal case and she should go to jail.

But if some bitch (or anyone really) screwed me out of some potentially life-changing (for the better) thing, be it scholarship, job promotion, etc. I would make it my life's mission to destroy them and everything they cared about. At least until their own life was sufficiently messed up. Eye for an eye +1.

I read this and it really hit home.

I’ve been on the bubble about a few things since my divorce. Moves/changes I made at my former job(s) “for the good of the family” (I put this in quotes because looking back now, it was selfish on my ex’s part). Things that I wouldn’t have done, were I more situationally aware of the long term ramifications.

And while I wouldn’t change the gift of my children, there were things that if I knew then what I know now, it would have changed Sam Malone’s history.

While there are things that I can take blame for, or (with an SJW mindset) reason that I could have taken blame for, there are some instances where I can’t even attempt to come to a conclusion where those situations would have been “my” fault.

It would have been one thing if this chick saw his email and told him, “Hey, you got accepted, but I don’t think you should do it because blah blah blah...”. If he would have sided with her and passed up the opportunity, then that’s the blame that he has to accept.

It’s something entirely different to outright deceive him. That doesn’t give him the choice to accept or refuse.

Eye for an eye indeed.

Repped.

I wouldn't be surprised if some white knight starts a Go Fund Me campaign to get her off the hook of responsibility.
