Cod liver oil and mct oil for mental health

Not saying this will work in all cases but since I started taking MCT oil and high doses of fish oil my issues with mania have completely subsided. I also started taking apple cider vinegar, and eating parsley so those could have played a role in getting rid of to toxins in my body that could contribute towards it.
I have always taken fish oil capsules, and used coconut oil for a while now but high dosing the stuff is a game changer.

Other dietary changes included cutting out wheat(very recent so no I'm not saying wheat causes mania),and buying cage free eggs (they have more Omega 3s), eating more fish, organic grass fed beef (it's Walmart so I bet it's grass fed but grain finished),steak.
Tons of Kale and fruit was already there, but ever since the MCT + high dose cod liver oil has worked so well ive taken my diet more seriously buying organic kale vs normal, organic carrots vs normal, more high quality protein scources, etc instead of classic "clean eating" that I've practiced for years.

I just want to make this post to say fuck big pharma. Seriously MCT oil and codliver oil would have saved me so much time and horrible restless nights. These are practically drugs. For anyone else out there who's battling any other ailments that" can't be cured "and involve shitty drugs that fuck up your body and mind do not give up the fight. Keep trying till you find what works. And fuck big pharma.

Shout out to Tim ferris for the MCT oil idea.he has bipolar and recommends it so that's where I got that idea from.

Great post OP!

If I remember correctly MCT will help you oxidize fat/ketones even though you consume some carbs. This in turn will help stabilize hormones and neurotransmitters. Promote neuroendocrine homeostatis in other words. Check out Dominic D`Agostino, he`s perhaps the world`s leading expert on this subject.
https://www.ketonutrition.org/

Coffee is also a major player in mental, neurological, behavioural disorders BTW. Coffee, like refined carbs, will promote excessive levels of glutamate (among other things) that in turn promotes what`s called excitotoxicity in many people. It causes excessive firing of neurons that has been linked to everything from ALS, Epilepsy ADD, ADHD, OCD, etc. etc. Also chronic caffeine consumption lowers serotonin levels, which again plays a role in many disorders. (Including premature ejaculation BTW.) Lower functional levels of GABA and acetylcholine also. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/BF00733753

There are good reasons to think that krill oil is better than cod liver oil.

Same.

The other part that's helped is doing breath work to relax myself. Meditation might work to but I won't do it regularly. Any think that forces you to synchronize breath, mind, and body is gonna help like taichi, certain yogas, etc. I noticed that if I started having racing thoughts if I did my drown proofing stuff it would allow me to calm down instead if it turning into crazy thoughts.

Drown proofing work is just a more fun way to do that and it just so happens to be practical if you are a life guard, surfer,or like swimming.

Word of caution, MCT oil has cleaned out my system many a times. Start with a small dose, and make sure you are home and near a toilet the first few times.

What do you consider high doses of fish oil? I've been trying 9tsp/day of liquid fish oil (roughly 30-40 capsules or 3 fluid ounces) that I take in a shot glass. It's seemed to clear up my brain fog a fair amount. Not cheap, though.

Tim Ferriss has recently claimed to have bipolar depression but in recent years it seems to have become "cool" again to be bipolar, at least judging from the shit I read on Tinder bios.

I just don't know what to believe anymore. He might just be a high functioning autist with an assload of anxiety. You hardly need any evidence to score a gradually less stigmatized diagnosis of 'bipolar', 'bipolar depression', or 'cyclothymia' from a psychiatrist these days.

Usually if somebody is not neurologically normal, anything that would treat a probable GABA or serotonin deficiency would reduce expression of symptoms, so assuming he doses heavily on MCT and fish oil it wouldn't really matter what his disease of choice is, it's going to work. Anything that boosts dopamine in the short term might work as well. It's not a mystery why so many bipolars chain smoke.

Interesting tip on MCT oil though. I'll have to look into it.

Do you mind sharing the dosages that you're using?

No, but some docs say that you don't need this much fish oil and that it may be dangerous because of the potential for heavy metal accumulation. Of course, these are the main stream docs that push pills, etc. so take their advice with a grain of salt.

I try to eat two servings of fish a week. On weekends I have bagels with nova lox (salmon) and if I don't get another fish serving during the week I'll have sardines for lunch. I tend to do that on the weekends because they stink. You have to rinse your untensils immediately and I put the tin in a plastic grocery sack before placing in my trash. to keep the smell down.

Not possible unless it was an inferior brand with something wrong in it.

For anyone willing to shell out more bucks to get a cleaner less polluted product, then I recommend KRILL OIL:

Heavy metal accumulation might become an issue over time - thus better to switch to deep-sea krill oil which is much cleaner - and also much more expensive.

I'm definitely not an expert. I've read that there's such a thing as too much fish oil and that certainly makes sense to me. Some fish oil is undoubtedly healthy but you have to achieve the correct ratios of omega 3s and 6s. Do a little research before you totally give up on the idea of supplementing w fish oil.

The relationship between diet and mental health seems to be studiously ignored by the psychiatric community. I learned about some of these things when a close family member was in a mental hospital and was about to be committed and forcefully medicated for schizophrenia. I did some research and found some information about ketosis and some other brain healthy food choices. We somehow convinced the shrink to let us take her home, promising to get her some outpatient therapy. We put her on a healthy diet, and 2 weeks later she wasn't "schizophrenic" anymore. That was 6 years ago.

I know there are some people who need meds, but fuck the medical establishment/big pharm for the harm they're causing needlessly.
