Garrett Camp, Uber cofounder, has returned from a "soul seeking" period in Africa by announcing publicly his intention to start a new Cryptocurrency, the Eco. The test net should be by EOY.

One to watch out for, if only because of the influence/power of those involved. A few key features:

* Will rely upon a "verified network of global universities and reputable organizations" to verify each node;
* Aims to address usability issues seen thus far in crypto (and even fiat) by having a simple UI - their standard is to be as intuitively usable as mPesa in Kenya;
* Large token supply, to keep the value of each token attractively low;
* Aims to be more power-efficient than Bitcoin, by reducing the need for ever-more-complex problem solving by miners;
*Aims to distribute the value generated by the system back to the users, in an equitable fashion.

Eco plans to distribute 50% of the token supply to the first 1 billion unique,
verified human users on the platform (with equitable demographic and geographic
representation) to allocate value created to a large community of users.

I think the idea here is to achieve rapid scale and adoption, which in turn is what will give the currency its utility, which will then drive the price up. Standard.

However, 1 Billion is a lot of people, for sure, and it might sound like "too much" and therefore suspicious/crazy/fraudulent.

You could, however, also read it as a sign of great ambition and of confidence in the scope and impact of the project, which in turn might be driven by knowledge which is not in the public domain which is favourable to this initiative.

Or to the contrary, you could interpret it to mean that they have figured out that, in order for it to work as intended, you would need to have at least 1 billion people using it, which means it actually has a low-ish chance of panning out.

Time will tell. As I said, one to watch - still very early days.

It is obvious that if they have no way of verifying who is receiving the tokens, their project will suffer serious setbacks if they proceed regardless.

From the whitepaper, it does not seem that they are upholding anonymity as a key value.

No problem with criticism, I actually welcome it because it sharpens my mind as well. But do it well, add substance - or else hold your peace. These sort of posts just add nothing, derail the thread and are a waste of time.

Are you Garrett Camp? I'm not sure why you're taking this personally or why there is any need at all to state "No problem with criticism" - that should be obvious, unless you have some sort of personal emotional investment in this.

If criticism is fine then stop getting defensive about a random and dead end crypto which is promising the moon and has severe challenges.

No I was quite serious, fraud like that is a big problem with airdrops.

Beyond the fact that it has a big name attached to it, and that goofy "finding myself in africa" story, does this thing have anything going for it?

Yup, there could be fraud. But I doubt someone with that much to lose would go through all this trouble to do something which they know would murder their reputation forever. Not impossible, of course.

At this stage, there are still too many open questions, which we cannot answer because I don't think even they know (what Universities will be the verifiers? What "reputable institutions"? How will they make the UI as simple as mPesa? Why did they choose the 1 Billion number exactly? Is it the minimum or the maximum? etc.) These questions ought to be answered as the time comes closer to the launch.

So for now, I'm withholding judgment until later in the year, when there should be more info.

Obviously, if none of these and more questions have clear, verifiable answers by the time of launch we can definitely suspect fraud.

The main thing that keeps this in my radar (I am not endorsing!) is the (very) big name attached to it, and the therefore plausible promise of associating with other "big institutions" of repute. That's already more than most ICOs.

Just signed up. Figured why not? It took less than 30 seconds and cost me nothing, so at worst I wasted those 30 seconds, and at best the 500 free coins I'll be getting will do something, anything.
