How to clean/get rid of Mildew/musty smell from carpet?

A while back I accidentally dropped raw egg mixture on the carpet. Soaked a rag with water, did some wiping up with baking soda/vinegar, hoped everything would be fine. Although I would still notice the smell and repeat a few more times days/weeks later, and after which I would look up and guess it's likely a mildewy smell. So maybe wetting it had made things worse.

So I've tried the standard solutions of caking the area with baking soda and then vacuuming, and also spraying a mix of vinegar/water while being careful not to get it to wet and make things worse. But none of those seem to be making the problem go away entirely, and I wasn't paying attention to how bad it originally was so I'm not even sure if it made the situation better.

It's a bit frustrating but hopefully there's a solution that doesn't involve a lot of headache.

Wild guess, but I have used odor bombs/foggers in my car to get rid of smells from when I accidently left the window open and it rained. No other cleaning product worked getting rid of the smell. I'm sure they have something similar for home use. Maybe check a local home improvement store.

Carpet cleaning would be your best bet. Shouldn't be overly expensive if you shop around. If I owned the place that's what I'd do. I can't imagine it being more than $50 if you only need them to do a single room.

Get a baby puppy. The piss and shit smell will hide the mildew smell.

For 5 bucks try a spray bottle of Fabreeze. ShotgunU is probably correct but I would try Fabreeze first. Its different than other sprays, it binds to the things that make smells and neutralizes them. The product works great generally but in your case it may have soaked through the carpet to the pad. Worth a try though, and it doesn't take much product to work meaning you have most of the rest of the bottle for other things.

Try Ozium. Spray it directly on the stain and walk away. The stuff is tozic, don't breathe it!

I know this sounds like woo woo, but try an illuminated Himalayan salt block. The heat creates ions or some such and it has helped a great deal in my son's bedroom where the cats ruined the carpet when he was away for an extended period.

Somebody also recommended dumping unscented kitty litter on the spots, letting it sit for a week, and then vacuuming the stuff up, but caveat emptor as we have not tried that yet. In my mind, if that crap got damp, it would probably ruin the carpet.
