This falls under a similar category (probably one tier below) as mining- a decent investment compared to returns on traditional investments, but far below the gains that could be made by simply buying and holding a solid crypto.

Yes, but since the market has gone bear the lending rates have tanked. The leveraged crypto markets have taken a big hit as people have been mauled and moved to short. Last year (bull) you were looking at 27.5%; this year it is currently going to struggle to do 7%. Though, you would, of course, been much better off holding coin last year.

Everything is in trouble at the moment: crypto, stocks, real estate, bonds all down. The only thing that has looked quite good is gold. In particular gold mining stocks. Gold mining stocks are often at about 2 year lows, have lost 50% despite gold going up they have gone down. Though I don't want to buy more at current prices as there is a good chance they could go down 50-70%.

Right now the best bet seems to be shorts, like Facebook.

When you put up BTC to lend, does it pay in BTC or USD?

If BTC - then this is a way to put your HODL'ing on juice and get 7-10% more sats for doing absolutely nothing.

I registered on Bitfinex and it says they're cutting support for Americans, anywhere else we can lend?

Lending USD is dead. I have no idea how much you would make lending crypto.

You can find a list of sites you can lend on here: https://coinlend.org

Wouldn't there be more interest for crypto lending (rather than usd) in the bear market, especially if everyone is shorting?

My thoughts as well.

Coinlend is saying lending BTC on Bitfinex yields 6.59% YTY

The crypto lending rates spike when they are going down, but are generally poor.

Up until about February lending USD had always netted decent returns, even in a not particularly great market. But as things are USD lending would be 2% tops on the year.

As I think crypto is going down more, I wouldn't be too interested in holding to lend.

@gework,
I understand that the yield now has tanked, so we are no longer talking about anything near 27.5%, but back in the days it was still possible, was there enough demand to make sure that your money is actually being lent out most of the time? Just to clarify my question, suppose only 75% of the money is working on average at any given time, and the remainder is waiting to be loaned out, than the average yield would not be 27.5% but 20.6%, and if I understood correctly, after paying 15% in fees, it would be 17.5% (which is still great but of course the 75% I quoted is just as an example--if I knew what it is I would not need to ask this question).

The 15% fee has been removed from that 27.5%. I calculated that from how much I would have earned had I left my money loaned out all the time (which I didn't). On having some of the money not lent out, I can't give an exact figure, but it looks like 90% of my money was lent out on average. It's best not to have it all lent out all the time, as you need to compromise that to get higher lending rates.

As of now, you're looking at 2% / year lending USD on Bitfinex and I don't think that will change any time soon. Dollar borrowers are probably on aggregate reckless bulls and have been savaged in the crash.

The rates are still pretty decent on Quoine: https://cryptolend.net/rates.html

2% a year? How do they get any money lent to them at all at that awful rate?

Deep down I think we all know Bitcoin and cryptos are doomed to fail. Stocks and real estate aren't down? Go and find 100 stocks that are up, its' not hard. Ditto for real estate. Chatting shit mate.

There's currently about $425M (USD only) lent out on Bitfinex at what would be ~2%/year.

Yeah, it's obvious there's a ton of money there, but why?
You can get 2% a lot more safely than by putting it on sketchy-as-hell Bitfinex.
