Basic Attention Token (BAT)

BAT is the token that is used with Brave browser.

Quote:Quote:

Basic Attention Token is a decentralized, transparent digital advertising platform based on the Ethereum blockchain from the inventor of Javascript and co-founder of Mozilla and Firefox. The platform is comprised of many components: a digital ad exchange that allows advertisers to purchase ad space and user attention, analytics dashboards, ML matching algorithms, attention measurement & reward systems, and more.

BAT ($BAT) is the ticker symbol for the Ethereum-based ERC20 utility token, utilized as the unit of account for attention within the BAT platform.

Advertisers will transact in $BAT to purchase advertising space and user attention;

Publishers and content creators will receive ad revenue and user contributions in $BAT;

Users will be rewarded in $BAT for their attention (“ad revenue sharing”).

When users choose to view ads within the BAT ecosystem, they will earn $BAT for their attention. For example, users will receive 70% revenue share per ad displayed through “private ad slots” (e.g., a private ad tab in the Brave browser).

Official site: https://basicattentiontoken.org/

Since BAT will be a freely exchanged currency between advertisers, publishers, and users, it could become a Google Adsense killer.

I now receive BAT ever month as a site publisher. I may be able to accumulate quite a bit of this without trying. The current price is $0.70, which is currently its USD all time high.

Have you actually received a payment yet or confirmed how much your traffic is worth as a publisher through the Brave browser?

I like the idea in theory, but am not sold on how the execution will work.

For example, Steemit had some similarities, but wasn't profitable for the vast majority of content creators, even those with established web presences.

I have received BAT payments via Uphold.com, Brave's partner. I have the option to transfer the BAT to my own Ethereum wallet, convert it to cryptocurrency, or convert to fiat and cash out.

The issue with determining how much traffic is worth is that each user determines his setting for releasing BATs to websites he likes. You can see how it works in the Payments section of Brave's browser settings.

What are your thoughts on the Brave browser itself?

It's value proposition is that you won't be tracked by advertisers, and it's a bit faster than Chrome. The only thing stopping me from using it is that it doesn't support my password manager yet.

What I like about BAT is that there is buzz that other browsers may use it, even if the Brave browser doesn't catch on.

Let’s get this out of the way first, BAT is not going to be limited to Brave. This is something we have found people are unaware of. The browser is a tool to test and implement BAT.

If/when another browser implements BAT, then it's clear it has real long-term potential.

Interesting. The most obvious browser will be Firefox, since it's the same founder. That will be a big day when that happens.

There are great people behind this token, people who have actually built and accomplished things. I got in a couple months ago and I will ride my gains out with this project.

They're adding BAT support for Twitch.

Who's the CEO? I can't find it.

Is it this Brendan Eich guy? Do you know what the structure of the company is?

^Ok, I thought it was a separate company but it's just an extension of Brave.

I have been using it for a week now. It is faster than any other browser I know, which is why I am using it. However, you can also tell that it is still in development. Some minor things are not userfriendly yet (e.g. bookmarks system) and there is a lack of extensions that I am used to from Chrome and that make my life easier. They still have a long way to go to catch up on Chrome or Firefox and I think it is absolutely necessary for BAT to be implemented by other browsers.

I'm using Brave for Android mobile. It is way faster than Chrome because it has ad blocking built in, and feels almost like Chrome, probably because it uses Chromium code. The FAQ page said Brave Payments via BAT will soon come to mobile (right now it's for desktop only).

It's a great concept but probably 5+ years away from competing with adsense.

There are also new ad networks coming out that utilize blockchain technology such as adbank.network

Ad blocking is at an all-time high, but so is ad revenue (generally speaking). So it's really difficult to see how this will play out.

Most older folks don't even realize that they're being advertised to on mobile (Google AdWords + native ads). So the traditional advertising model seems profitable for the next few years (good call zoom)...but not for too much longer.

I can 100% see the "new media" model being adopted by millennials in the coming years.

Millennials do NOT want to see advertisements involuntarily. This is where publications like Forbes are fucking up.

Monetization options like Patreon, Brave, Steemit, or even revshare (affiliate) deals are the future of publishing.

I downloaded Brave a few weeks ago and today just noticed Brave Payments. They gave me 15 BAT free to spend on sites I visit.

Just did a test and went to ReturnofKings.com and ROK shows up as a participant, pretty cool.

Feels kind of revolutionary seeing it in action like a milestone in the evolution of the Internet. If it takes off it will be huge.

The advantage of the Brave mobile browser is not just the blocked ads but the lack of data usage. If you use yoir phone mostly to read content like I do, you should see usage cut in half. I don't even come close to 2g. Which is a money saver. Check out Project Fi from Google as well which still lets you pay as you go data.

So Brave has finally activated its BAT wallet for users and credited it with some tokens.

Seems this forum is verified to receive BAT as well. Can the receiving end verify this?

Would certainly like to tip but gotta make sure it reaches the right people.

Wow, what the heck is going on with BAT's price. it's insane for this year alone.

Not sure how many have noticed this yet, but Gab forked (took brave browser open source code) and created their own browser which runs on bitcoin and the lightning network.

From my perspective, this is why the BAT price dipped recently, also a bitcoin implementation with the lightning network will make the Brave browser and BAT token irrelevant.

I am Brave user for over a year now.

The speed of the browser is quite good. By default, it has a ad-blocker and torrent downloader on (which honestly, needs a little bit more of work). Of course, if you value privacy, look no further.

That BAT concept seems promising too.

The main downside is that many websites do not work as intended in Brave. For example, since the newest release, I can't watch videos on Udemy anymore (I can log in, and browse that site, but can't watch anything). Hence, I have to use some other browser such as Chrome.

Same thing with some other websites that involve streaming (and rely heavily on scripts).

To be honest...you can't expect much from a browser that is still in beta testing. Problems come and go. Hopefully...once it leaves beta, things will get better.

My verdict is 7/10 - score can (and certainly will) be improved once it leaves beta. When that will happen? As soon someone opens a thread called "I am beta testing Brave. Does that make me Beta?".

Ah didn't see this thread before posting thread-73013.html

Brave works way better now IMO. I haven't had any issues personally (compared to several months back when it was way buggier)

Though I don't use Udemy or anything

Addendum to previous post - I figured out where the problem is.

If you use the newest version of Brave, you must enable cookies, in order to avoid problems when browsing some websites (in my case, Udemy and Vestaire).

Goodbye Chrome...you won't be missed.

Funny that this thread was bumped with no mention of what Gab's doing.

Over the past week it was announced that Gab is forking Brave's open source components (which are mostly based on Chrome), removing BAT, and adding Bitcoin.

This is the Achille's heel of the "utility token" model - any open source software can be forked to remove the utility token, because everyone prefers actual currency over a shitcoin.
