A normal workout week for beginners?

I have been on and off in the gym much of this year, but now over the past 2 months have found a routine of going in 2x/week to lift, cardio 2x/week. I don't feel that is enough to achieve the goals I want in 2018. Any thoughts on going 5 days in a row taking the weekend off vs going every other day vs. going 2 days on, 1 day off, etc ?

It all depends on what you're trying to achieve with your workout.

If you want to gain size then 5 days is what you should be aiming to do at a minimum and if you're doing it right you should be just about needing a rest in between. If you're trying to cut or lose weight then your goals are very different.

First step, come up with the goal.

Second step is to do some research on ways to obtain that goal and look for some good beginner programs, maybe pick one of them and stick with it and see how it works for you, if it's not working then ask why? If it is working then just keep improving.

Just look up a beginners program online and follow it 90ish days or until the program runs it's course.

You gotta figure it out for yourself.

Just take a few facts into consideration...

1. Your body will take a certain amount of time to recover and adapt to whatever you do. Could be 2 days, could be 4 days, ect. That part depends on your recovery ability and what it is that you're doing.

2. The time you spend AFTER you have fully recovered and adapted is time that you are regressing aka GOING BACKWARDS.

3. Knowing this, you should train your various muscle groups in such a schedule that you train them again as soon as they are recovered. This gets tricky when you factor in stuff like the other muscles you're trying to train, different recovery rates of certain groups, your work capacity, ect...

So it's not about how many days you train it's about how frequently you cause an adaptation. How many Stress-recovery-adaptation cycles can you create in a given time period.

It's just like your income, it's not about how many days you work per month it's about how much money you earn per month.

With these as guiding principles you can start to figure out your needs.
