Investing in Oil and Gas

This thread is about investing in the Oil and Gas sector, particularly in the EE countries (Russia and Ukraine) and other surrounding oil-rich countries.

There has been a recent upsurge about new findings of some Gas sites in Northern Russia and Southern Ukraine.
I have been seriously brainstorming about how to make the most of it.
I have heard that there are some people in these countries who became rich because of putting hands down this sector.

But a particular suggestion on making most out of it is something I am looking for.

As in, how does one makes the most from the Oil/Gas pills?
Is investing in the share market of the concerned companies the only way (on individual level)?

I think you could also make money if you owned land that had petroleum. But it would be hard to find that kind of land.

You could also consider buying an oil and gas ETF

No, Oil and Gas ETFs have a lot of time decay. UNG is the ETF for gas and has been a loser for years, maybe it's a good contrarian play but risky risky...

Oil is the most rigged market in the world, you need balls of steel to trade or invest in that.

If you're interested in the sector I would suggest the following:

Services ETF: OIH
Energy ETF: XLE
Particular stocks: SLB, RIG, HFC, APA, APC, PBR(Brazilian), EC(Colombian)
Refiners: HFC, WNR, CVI

Stay away from european stocks like TOT, could be good long term but with all the european issues it's crazy.

If you want to play a country try the Russia ETF, ERUS
