Sauna

Has anybody been living a long-term sauna lifestyle? Seen any health or mental benefits?

I've found myself traveling lately to hotels with saunas (or with attached gyms that have saunas). After seeing this Joe Rogan video below about huge reductions in mortality, I've made a serious effort to hit those saunas every day I can...I feel like my calm and focus are better on days when I do the sauna and it seems to be good for my skin. On work travel I can't always get a full hour workout in, but I can carve 15 minutes out to sit in the sauna and head off the stress of the day. Bonus, it makes cold showers more fun/bearable.






I also made some good friends in my hotel sauna in Helsinki a while back, it's a huge cultural thing over there and I still talk to some of those guys online today.

I used to attend a sauna daily. Certainly beneficial. Now I don't have a membership to that gym and I am seriously considering either building a sweat lodge or converting a room in the house to a sauna. I always feel mentally and physically relaxed in and after a sauna session, and my normally bad skin was much better at the time.

Must be crap. Finnish people live long because of healthy diet and a clean environment.

I sauna at least 3 times a week. There are clear benefits, especially now in the winter. Unfortunately here you have to wear something in the sauna in the UK whereas I have enjoyed in Europe where you can wear nothing and no one will bat an eyelid. The best I have ever visited was Allas Sea Pool in Helsinki.

Conquerer7 - can't go in the buff in the UK? Sounds like overwrought British modesty. A sauna I visited in Germany was co-ed, no clothes - chubby old women frequented it, thus the closed-eyes-sauna meditation exercise I invented on the spot.

Given the melancholic/borderline suicidal streak us Finns have, I’m suprised I’ve lived this long, regardless of diet/environment.

Have you tried the Kotiharju sauna in Helsinki? Highly recommend that one, for that old school experience.

I tried a sweat lodge a few times and it was bomb as fuck. Would highly recommend. Infrared saunas are great as well. You can pick them up for a pretty reasonable price.

Sauna is good. I prefer the Turkish bath. Helps keep my skin clear.

I love the sauna. I go in winter to help with muscle cramps in my back, and after work outs.

I can recommend the best sauna ever in NYC, just pm me.

I've used steam saunas for at least a year and my skin is a lot more smooth and clear for a few days, I can think more clearly and have gained more tolerance to the heat.

A steam sauna at 40°C and very high humidity is a lot more intense than a heating element dry sauna at 80°C and almost no humidity.

I'm hoping it will be worth the longer walk from the nightlife district as I'm planning my future Helsinki trip for a great sauna or two and much more of course.
