Even allowing for the woman's side of the story, it sounds like she was baiting the tiger. She claims the guy sat down and apparently didn't appreciate she existed and so started "manspreading extra".

You can see the normal instinct of commuters to aggression in the latter half of 8 Ball's video: the white guys and other civvies get up calmly and get the fuck out of the firezone drawing as little attention to themselves as possible.

This girl's story does not contain any suggestion he was stopping her from getting up before it all went nuclear. To my mind what more likely happened is that female typist has been accustomed to men protecting her through most of her adult life, such that the Fuckwit Detector, also known as common sense while on public transport, has atrophied. Or female typist's identity has been imperilled by an addled near-pensioner pushing against her, and typist has simply said to herself, "No, goddammit, I'm going to exercise some fucking power in my otherwise powerless, meaningless life" and has said "Can you move, please?"

Polite? Possibly. Justified? Maybe. Smart? Nope. As is sometimes said, "I admire your courage but I question your judgment." If you want to be the white version of Rosa Parks, you might try doing so in a civilised black area.

This is classic narcissism. It's not good enough that the guy was an aggressive fuckwit on the train. It's not enough to say anyone in the same seat would've probably got on the wrong end of the guy. She has to relate it to herself. The perp is 59 years old and likely had some sort of irrational reason for not liking the woman who sat down in the seat, but it certainly wasn't because the cunt existed. But narcissism is incapable of seeing the world in terms other than as relative to the narcissist, so she has to make the incident all about herself rather than see the guy as another fucked up human being who might've just been tweaking or possibly let go from his job by a 37 year old female HR consultant.

Again, this is not to excuse his conduct. Indeed his conduct is irrelevant right at this point, it's her perception that's somehow both horrifyingly and amusingly fascinating in the way an ant's legs wave around when a sociopath kid focuses a magnifying glass on it. She doesn't say "This crazy guy who had a problem with something pushed me into the wall." She says: "I sat down and this guy had a problem with that."

I wasn't expecting a 56-year-old smacking bitches on the subway to turn out to be a NASA flight specialist, but it would be pretty funny if it turned out she had picked a fight with someone who has an actual mental disability.

I regularly take public transit in a shitty American city. If someone is taking up a couple of seats, and there's no where else to sit, I'll say, "Excuse me." 99% of people move; for the 1% that don't, I'm not going to fight or even further engage them for a fucking seat, I'll just move on. It's not worth it. Life and time are too valuable to waste it fighting over a bus seat, then dealing with police reports after.

I don't understand how there is even an alternative to this approach for anyone of any status or success. In such a position you *always* have more to lose than the other guy, so pick your battles intelligently. Personally, I avoid any conflict which might result in a physical altercation unless we're talking life or death. Not over a fucking seat.

A story. An engineering co-worker told me about getting cut off while driving one day. Horns went back and forth, then fingers, then in car posturing, then at the next stop light more, guy who cut off my coworker gets out of car and comes over, more posturing, so my coworker also gets out and strikes first, fights, he says he kicked his ass. Now, because one guy is in the street bleeding, and they're holding up traffic, police get involved. They both go down to station, turns out bleeding guy's brother is a cop. He spends thousands on lawyers, a couple weeks of time and stress, and the whole thing gets dropped.

He told me this story as a bit of a humble-brag about how no one fucks with him and he doesn't back down. I was thinking the whole time about what a fucking retard he was. Because you're too childish to brush off some minor traffic hiccup and refuse about a half of dozen opportunities to disengage this poor fool in a shitty car, you risked a manslaughter charge, criminal record, your professional engineering license and livelihood, the ability to travel internationally, and the absolute best case (which played out) involved weeks of time and stress, getting punched, and thousands of dollars. But yeah it's worth it because you showed that you don't let trashy people in $300 cars cut you off.

I just can't get my head around the fact that people can't look 30s into the future at a few potential outcomes, and how every one is worse than just letting some things slide.

I think I've been pretty clear from the outset that even taking her story as-is, she should have known.
