What a douche. If I chose to be "gender neutral" or whatever the fuck, my dad would have told me to quit being such a faggot and go play football.

These people are nothing but attention whores with mental disorders. AND THE GENERAL POPULATION ENABLES AND ENCOURAGES IT.

Threads like this are pretty much the acid test for determining whether a forum member has actually been in a real, proper fight at least once in their life.

"Shoot him in the leg" = "I have never fired a gun under duress".

"Just hit him in the wrist with your baton" = "I have never done serious force on force training".

Rather depressing, really.

On a serious note, that sounds like a total overreaction by the police. Anyone who couldn't use a baton to neutralise a pathetic threat like that thing armed with a penknife isn't fit to be called a police officer.

Plus, why do you think those cops are getting paid enough to risk getting fucked up by a knife that is held by obviously mentally ill person? Just because justice or morals? Oh, come on.

Holy shit, what a video...difference is that this is some latino lowlife with a big ass knife and is not some chubby student fag. But yeah, I never had to pull a gun on anybody so what do I know.

This was a person with a severe mental illness who was being enabled by the people around him. Rather than helping him directly confront and manage his mental illness, they encouraged him to indulge in it. As a result, he not only inflicted massive, chronic psychological harm upon himself, he actively sought to project his damaged psyche onto the rest of society through his "activism". Like many people with severe mental illness, he became suicidal, and was successful in his attempt to commit suicide-by-cop. Nothing of value was lost here, the only person I feel sorry for is the cop who might feel some guilt over shooting this freak.

This story should not provoke discussion on police brutality or armed confrontation tactics. This was very clear cut. This story happens almost every day - a mentally ill person decides to commit suicide. In this case it was suicide-by-cop. The unfortunate creature just as easily might have hanged itself, slit its wrists or overdosed on Tylenol. Again, I would remind you that not only was this person suffering mental illness, but he was engaged in political activism to encourage the spread and widespread cultural endorsement of his illness/perversion. For this reason, frankly, I am glad this person is dead. Society is better off with one less of these damaged freaks running around inflicting their sick madness on the rest of us. The people who knew him and enabled his mental illness should be ashamed of themselves. If they had the moral courage and fortitude to confront this person about his delusions rather than indulge them, perhaps he would still be alive.

Right... Could have done the old quick-draw, shoot, and twirl the pistol before re-holstering.

As a lolbertarian, I hate to see muh freedomz of threatening cops with knives while yelling 'shoot me!' infringed upon in such a heinous, callous, and frankly disgusting manner. The Constitution clearly states that knife wielding assailants will be subdued with a firm hug, followed by a vape session.

Mentally impaired person committed suicide by cop - they even found I believe 3 notes.

scorpion has the right view point here.

This person was fucking mental, this person also was sexually confused - what do we know about the sexually confused ?

Mental illness and suicide rates SKYROCKET.

I won't weigh into the debate as to whether the police use of force was justify, because that topic has already been well covered at this point.

Instead I'd like to thank everyone for their thoughtful contributions. While obvious this was not a person who has likely contributing much positive value to the world, I highly respect that fact that conversation here has not leaned towards suggesting that it deserved to die just because of who it was.

Police training as I understand it is "If you have to fire, aim for centre of mass, i.e. the torso." Reason being that it's too easy to miss the arm or the leg, the gun's recoil will throw your shot off balance at least a bit, and a bullet in the torso has immense stopping power and might not be lethal. In a crisis you don't rise to the occasion, you descend to the level of your training.

So very often once the severely damaged unit decides it's going punch its ticket to the hereafter it decides to take as many people with it as possible. One of the most positive aspects of this outcome is that no one else died.

Note the male officer putting a physical barrier between himself and the subject to reduce the likelihood of being forced the fire.

If anything, I'm impressed by their professionalism during the incident. Clear, firm, but calm commands. No screaming or adding additional stress to the situation through excited verbalization.

I've seen a lot worse from police. Based on this video alone, these officers (including the woman) are excellent.

Glad to see the guys that have been in shit won out over the professional monday morning quarterbacks in this thread. Anytime I hear someone talk about shooting limbs/weapons, I know they have never fired a gun outside call of duty. I've done training where one person had a rubber knife and other had to wrestle it away. Even when I went against females they got off some nasty stabs before I got it away. Knives also go through most ballistic vests that police wear, not a well known fact. The point of the training was to show that even when you had considerable advantage over a person, it was hard to win against a knife. We also got shown fatal knife stabbing pictures, which are worse than any gun wound you could imagine.

These kind of calls are more common that you would think, crazy people use it as a way to commit suicide of ambush police. I knew a officer that got killed on a similar call. The suspect called 911 on himself, then killed the first officer so that the second one would shoot him. I feel bad for the officer that had to pull trigger, her career is likely over, even with it being a clean shoot I doubt she will stay with that department.

Suits I should've been more specific, in the literal case of someone literally pulling out a knife and charging a cop.

Obviously there are times where it's on the cop if things go to shit, and their training fails them.

I'm not saying "X and you won't get shot".

I agree they showed reasonable restraint, My one question though is wasnt this an ideal scenario for tazing? Even mall security guards carry one of these now.

Obviously he was suicidal but his was't some out of control PCP fueled bezerker. He didnt even raise the knife. He was moving slowly and even hesitatingly,

If this isn't the ideal tazing scenario...what is? Im truly curious

To be an ideal tazing situation, you actually have to issue them to your officers.

The best thing about that video is that she put just one shot in him (not in the head, or face), saw him drop, and then stopped shooting.

Does anyone know the odds of surviving one shot to the chest? I know it varies based on bullet type and wound location, but I'm looking for a general idea.

It is being reported that GT police do not have tasers. Second I can vouch that for every funny taser video you see on youtube there are five cases of tasers either missing or not making a full arc. My batting average with a taser is a pretty bad. The one time that I go it to work well the guy was three feet away latched onto a car hood and refusing to move. Taser work by shooting two prongs with needles that hook into the skin. The two prongs create a arc through the body. If one prong gets hung in a thick jacket/clothing or misses then the other prong will not have the intended effect. It will still hurt but it won't bring you down. Even if the taser works and he is on the ground he still has the knife, so you're back to square one.

The problem with tasers is that you can't responsibly dual wield such a less-than-lethal weapon and a firearm at the same time.

When you facing down some with a lethal weapon, you need to have a lethal weapon at the ready, not a taser (even if you have been issued one). If you're in range to use a taser, then they're in range to kill you with their knife. Given the unreliability of tasers, no one the video I saw should have had one in their hands instead of a handgun.

To all you guys saying "well have you ever fought someone with a knife?" Or something similar, you seem to be talking about one-on-one situations.

I count six cops there. There was no reason to shoot that kid.

And again to all the guy who say "have you ever been in combat" or something similar, I have to wonder if you really have.

If so, you would realize death is horrible. Killing is horrible. Anyone who's been there would know how important it is to keep EVERYONE alive.

There were a lot of opportunities in that video to use less than lethal force to take that kid down. Anyone with any training can see that.

US cops have taken this "I have a right to protect myself" crap too far. Stand and fight. We have pussified cops to the point that that has been forgotten. Take some type of risk so everybody lives.

This is just another stupid move by people who are supposed to be held to higher standards.

Aloha!
