The University of Miami is now providing scholarships covering 100 percent of the “demonstrated financial need” of DACA students who reside in Florida.

The “U Dreamers Program”—which promises to cover tuition and fees, room and board, a meal plan, and student health insurance—is “renewable for up to four academic years or such time [as is] required to complete the baccalaureate degree.”

UM estimates that the total cost of attendance for an undergraduate student living on campus is slightly more than $66,000, of which at least $62,000 would be covered by the U Dreamers Program.

DACA, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, is an Obama-era policy that protects illegal immigrants who were brought to the country as children from deportation, and also authorizes them to work in the United States.

Apart from DACA status, incoming freshmen must have attended an accredited Florida high school, while transfer students can qualify for the financial aid as long as they “attend a regionally accredited institution in the State of Florida” and “have completed or will soon complete 60 credit hours or more at the time of application.”

Students also must meet the university’s academic requirements, which for incoming freshman entail a minimum high school GPA of 3.2 and an SAT score of at least 1100 or ACT score of at least 21. Transfer students must maintain a 3.5 college GPA.

According to the College Board’s most recent statistics from the SAT National Percentiles study, a score of 1100 on the SAT is in the 55th percentile, while The Princeton Review identifies 21 as the national average on the ACT.

“As a student who had higher than a 3.2 in high school and who scored a 25 on the ACT, I wasn’t even accepted to UM outright. They offered me Spring admission that was conditional on doing a semester away program with a partner school of theirs,” UM student Andrea Cicilia told Campus Reform, noting that she wasn’t offered any scholarship money.

“It’s disappointing and unfair that UM would give full scholarships to DACA students, especially when they can qualify with a lower GPA and lower test scores than me,” she added. “Would I qualify for a full scholarship as a citizen with a 3.2 GPA and 21 on the ACT? Probably not.”

Another student who transferred to UM, Natalie Telfeja, said “I consider myself lucky to have the partial scholarship that I have,” despite coming to the school with a 3.7 GPA.

“It’s not fair that an undocumented student with a lower GPA could qualify for a full scholarship over someone like me,” she opined. “They are practically receiving preferential treatment for their immigration status.”

Despite requiring only average test scores, UM’s Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions Iris Florez said the university is enthusiastic to “impact the lives of high-achieving DACA students,” noting that while DACA students have been able to attend UM prior to the U Dreamers Program, they haven’t been able to receive financial aid of this magnitude.

“The students that I had the opportunity to work with through the U Dreamers program are exceptional in many ways and reflect the mission of the University.” Florez said. “Aside from stellar academics, each one has been a pillar within their classrooms and communities, despite the challenges they have faced.”

If you're a U.S. citizen who despite high SAT test scores are unable to afford going to college, how does that make you feel?

University of Miami has a long history of shady dealings. How many of you remember the scandals that surrounded the football team during the 1980s? There were quite a few: http://www.bleacherreport.com/articles/8...s-programs

During the Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson eras of Miami football, the team was known for guns, drugs, and other violations. The players were criminals off the field. Athletic Director Paul Dee, who heads the NCAA infractions committee, allegedly hid drug testing results from Erickson so players could avoid suspension. Furthermore, the Canes were convicted of Pell Grant fraud which provided money to players and their families. This landed Miami on probation for its actions in the 1980's.

The ghettos in Carol City and all around UM remind me of favelas in a third world country, so i'm sure the illegal immigrant students will feel right at home there.

So Bernie Sanders' dream of free college came true after all, you just have to wear a sombrero and fake black handlebar mustache while attending.

People need to be smarter about how they spend education money. If you pay out of state tuition, you're financing this or something like it.

How is it legal to offer scholarships to illegals? That HAS to break a few federal laws.

Was about to say, building the wall might require Republican support, but if hes serious he should be able to do something about DACA by himself.

The university of Miami can happily pony up free rides for illegals.

Doesn't mean they'll be able to get sponsored when they graduate! Still going back!

So we get to finance their college, as well as pay for ours. I'd also like to contribute to building them a mansion while I live in a crap shack.

What's troubling is that most of the students probably won't finish. Do these students have to qualify at all? Do they have to be able to read? We are becoming a society which places all of its emphasis on victims and no emphasis on accomplishment.

Well, at least the University of Miami has always done a great job at making cheer uniforms as small as possible.

< Next step panty-less uniforms and no reading skill necessary as a student, in fact you don't have to read a single book, because that is just white hetero-patriarchal sexist logic speaking.

As University of Miami alum myself I can tell you that this is actually doing a disservice to these kids. Paying/working my own way through school out of necessity I received a concurrent and equally if not more valuable business/life education as a low level drug trafficker as I did in my major's course work. Though Id admit that track isn't for everyone

I also know enough to know that someone is skimming / scamming this program somehow. Its fucking Miami after all

They just said it was ok for them to take the damned bar examination in California. So yeah, they're not even supposed to be in the country, yet they can somehow pass the character and fitness to become a lawyer. People have been refused admission for having too many speeding tickets - not joking.

I guess being illegally in the country does not reflect negatively on the character and fitness of someone to respect laws and legal process. How convenient.

The tuition to illegals has happened in a few other states - started with high schools, actually so we saw this coming. As someone mentioned before if you pay out of state tuition for a state school you're getting extra fucked. Unless you absolutely positively need to go to college to become an engineer, doctor or something similar, skip it. If all you need is the piece of paper to say you have a bachelors degree there are far less burdensome ways to do this - community college for your AA, online/distance for the rest of your BA, overseas schools, etc.

Don't feed the globalist troll anymore than you have to. The ship is going down regardless - you don't need to help drill holes.

I recall that while I was being interview for admission to my state bar, I had my assistant/friend waiting in the lobby while I was with the committee. Apparently, he got to talk with a person that was to go in after or before me. That person was angry that he had been called in and questioned on 'his ethic's issue'. Apparently, because he initially left (fled?) China in the 1970s and came to the United States illegally, the board wanted to question his fitness to become a lawyer. At the time of the interview he had gotten legal status to be in the United States.

Apparently, from the tone and manner of the questions by the board to him, in order to be considered a moral person he was supposed to have stayed in China and risked starving to death, there instead of trying to get out and go somewhere else in order to avoid getting killed.

Most of these universities already forgive the debt accrued by minority students. At least Miami is being upfront about it. The only real difference is that these are illegals. They'll get an excellent education, then put that to use making their home countries better places when Trump sends them packing.

DACA members are ineligible for federal financial aid, so it's not uncommon for universities to offer them partial or full scholarships to improve their diversity numbers. I don't know for sure, but I assume the universities try to make out on the back end by including the DACA enrollment in total student numbers they report to the national government when applying for federal grants. So, couldn't any university which accepts public money be sued and asked to provide records on if they are including non-eligible students in the numbers they report to the Feds?

University of Miami reached out to me a couple of times after I had sat my grad school exam in the UK. I never replied because I was set on being in LA or NYC.

As somebody who has legally immigrated to the US, and who had to self fund his studies, fuck the University of Miami!

I applied for US Citizenship a few weeks ago and I had my bio-metric appointment just yesterday. I expect to become a LEGAL American soon!

Based on this comment, Im willing to bet you havent been to UM, Carol City, or an actual favela.

Carol City is nowhere near UM. Not even close. Try 20 miles apart.

But this is near UM...
