I've always found the fundamental arguments behind the Freakonomics creators to be a little, well, flawed. Some of it is valid, but in a lot of instances they are trying to make a case for something where a case simply cannot be made.

I've always found the fundamental arguments behind the Freakonomics creators to be a little, well, flawed. Some of it is valid, but in a lot of instances they are trying to make a case for something where a case simply cannot be made.

They usually make it clear that correlation does not equal causation, even if they try to argue that there is a causal link. The only thing they demonstrate with statistics is the correlation (or lack thereof). Root causes remain elusive, even where the authors suggest possible causes.

They tend to base a lot of their arguments on behavioral economics, which at this point is very experimental. A lot of mainstream economists tend to view behavior economics as sort of a cop-out.

Well, basically if a prostitute is her own boss, she might only work 2-3 days a week.

If she has a pimp, she might be forced to work everyday.

Thats why she is making more money.

Especially considering that this article comes from Chicago. Chicago is full of young girls who are controlled by pimps.
