Most affordable places that are worth visiting?

I'm thinking SE Asia, but would love to hear from people with more experience.

Consider Cambodia and Laos.

Cambodia depressed me. The only place there to pull decent tourists was Siem Reap. Phnom Penh is the most depressing city I've ever been to. Almost every girl who will Fuck with foreigners is a prostitute. Also felt like most Cambodians saw me as an ATM. Mondulkiri and Ratanakiri were my favorite provinces. I didn't like the Cambodian beach scene at all. But Kampot was a gem.

People I'm Laos have a bit more honor. The country has more accessible scenic beauty than cambo and a couple really great motorbike loops. There's two really epic zip line treks and myriad smaller ones. Lots of waterfalls. Some good festivals. The girls are more traditional. The only likely places to get laid by a local are Luang Prabang or Vientiane. Maybe vang Vieng.

Thailand is quite cheap outside Bangkok. Isan and the north are good for traveling around while not being surrounded by other farang. Though there are less farang hunters and English spoken. Most farang hunting girls in Bangkok are actually poor girls from there.

Haven't really done Myanmar, Malaysia, yet. Heard good things about Indonesia and phillipines. They're supposed to be the easiest. Cheap too.

Get lonely planet sea on a shoestring. It's a good overview of the region. There's also a joint guidebook on northern Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Personally I like buying the up to date ebook for individual countries and a cheap out of date regional book to thumb through.

But how can you still recommend Cambodia based on this report? Shame. I was planning to head over at some point, because I think the girls are damn hot. Has anyone else had the same experience?

Indonesia is quite expensive to game compared to other countries in the region.

Despite of the negatives (or because of them) I think everyone should experience Cambodia once in their life.

Truly eye opening, and personally that country made me reconsider many things I took for granted. Once one of the most powerful empires in Asia, the history of how that place became the biggest shithole is quite an unique experience.

But as far as game goes, not the best place. I wish I had visited some years ago when the riverside was supposed to be such a great place to party.

I'm a man of mystery and paradoxes, chuckle. Not everywhere I go or recommend is based on having an easy mode vacation. That's boring. And you asked about cheap places. Just manage your expectations there.

If you're concerned about money you should learn the concept of "cost-offsetting" expensive countries with poorer ones. SEA is a fantastic place to stay-travel cheaply for the winter. It balances out your time in nearby Japan, Hong Kong, or Singapore.

That's how I do it. I live in an expensive world city then travel around a cheap winter for several months and watch my bank account grow fat again.

What makes Indonesia so expensive? I assume you mean staying pimped out in Jakarta and going to clubs with cover? I'd do that for a month, get bored, then travel around to different regions. It'd only stay expensive if you tried to keep an apt as a base in Jakarta.

As much as I love SEA (I'm in PI 2 or 3 times a year), for great cheap travel, my trip to Kenya and Tanzania last year was amazing. Treks and climbing are not cheap but hiking, beaches and women were amazing!

"I remember reading an article from the NY Times, where women made significantly more money than their husbands - and one wife was like, "I made 7 figures this year and he stayed home, I'm not sucking his dick" - WIA

Did you climb Kilimanjaro? Michael Crichton wrote a book "Travels" where he describes the Kilimanjaro trek, and it sounded pretty awesome.

Most affordable places that are worth visiting?

I read an article just a few weeks ago, about how Sihanoukville, the oldest and largest seaside resort city in Cambodia, is one of the cheapest places on earth to live. Here is an excerpt from the article:

Cambodia is probably the cheapest place to live not only in Southeast Asia but perhaps in the world.

If your budget is shoestring, you can rent a furnished room with fan, private bath, international cable television, and internet for US$100 per month or less. A more up-market studio with air conditioning, balcony with a sea view, and all other amenities costs in the range of US$150 to US$200 per month, without a lease or long-term commitment.

Food is a ridiculous bargain. It’s easy to find a full Western meal for US$2 or US$3. You can enjoy a beer out for as little as 50 cents, depending on the place and time, and you’ll never pay more than US$1.

If you stick to a simple life, it’s difficult to exceed US$400 per month on food and drink, plus another US$175 on rent and visa, making it easy to live here on US$600 or less.

I'm open to anything. Any type of climate, women of any race, culture/history, outdoor activities, nightlife, etc.

I'm trying to get into a career that has lots of time off, and looking for places that will let me save and invest most of what I earn. I'm really open to SE Asia, Central/South America, and any other places that people suggest.

If you want to do your own research, you can use Numbero or some of the other cost-of-living calculators that exist on the web.
