Professor publishes paper equating transracialism and transgenderism - gets hate

The article, ”In Defense of Transracialism,” by Rebecca Tuvel, an assistant professor of philosophy at Rhodes College, drew a significant backlash following its publication, in late March. The article discusses public perceptions of racial and gender transitions by comparing the former NAACP chapter head Rachel Dolezal’s desire to be seen as black with the celebrity Caitlyn Jenner’s public transition from male to female.

The author of the article didn't write it to mock transgenderism even though it would have been a nice troll angle. Instead she is a supporter of people who choose to transition but despite her being on the same ideological side she ended up still taking lots of criticism from her fellow leftist academics.

The result has been an eruption of complaints from a number of philosophers and other academics, expressed mainly on Facebook and Twitter. [See the update below for a response from Prof. Tuvel.] Among the complaints is the charge that the paper is anti-transgender.

That charge may come as a surprise to some readers, as it comes through quite clearly in her paper that Professor Tuvel supports accepting transgender individuals’ decisions to change sexes.

The paper in question: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.11...12327/full

In this article, I argue that considerations that support transgenderism extend to transracialism.1 Given this parity, since we should accept transgender individuals’ decisions to change sexes, we should also accept transracial individuals’ decisions to change races. I entertain and reject four objections that suggest a society should not accept an individual's decision to change races. I then turn to Sally Haslanger to argue for an account of race that allows for racial membership on the basis of social treatment, and, I will add, self-identification. I conclude that if some individuals genuinely feel like or identify as a member of a race other than the one assigned to them at birth—so strongly to the point of seeking a transition to the other race—we should accept their decision to change races.

Cognitive dissonance, thy name is social justice.

I, for one, thoroughly enjoy watching the leftist circular firing squads mobilize their outrage brigades once more.

If transgender is real, then transracial are real too. Also trans-species are not far behind.

Actually Dolezal recently defended trans-racialism.

What the professor is missing is that she just jumped ahead with the logic. They will push the other stuff only later.

When you think about it everybody's from Africa; it's just that some left sooner than others.
