Most secure cloud service

Hey guys, my apologies if this has been covered before (and please let me know if there is a thread because if there is I missed it during my search).

Let's say you want to back up all your important files and data and you are using a hard drive (or 2) as a primary back up. Maybe you have some automated program which updates it constantly either by cable or wifi. And needless to say they are encrypted. What if however you lose both your computer and hard drive?

I hear a lot of people (and yes me included technically using icloud for my iphone) use cloud services to back up their data. Now obviously you can make it secure with passwords and not be retarded when it comes to making yourself vulnerable to hacking etc.

But what about the cloud services themselves? What if they can read and pass on your data to the governments or something like that? After that Vault 7 wikileaks thing it makes me wonder if there is any trustworthy service. That isn't to say I'm hiding questionable data but what if you just want peace of mind that you aren't being spied on?

What cloud services do you guys use (if you use them) and how sure are you that they are trustworthy? Maybe it is pointless worrying about it given how you hear these stories about the CIA being able to hack your whatsapp and other so called 'encrypted' services. My instinct is that anything you put on the internet is immediately beyond your control but what do you guys think?

All the cloud is, is a strangers server, and you dont know where it is located. So if you want to keep stuff away from the government, dont use a cloud service

You said it in your final paragraph. Anything you put online and onto hardware that isn't in your physical possession is suspect and exposed.

All "encrypted" services are not safe - most keep a copy of the private key in case the government requests it. You should encrypt your files yourself, and then store them on the cloud on whatever provider you want.

I work in this space. If the file isnt encrypted before you upload it theres a 99% chance someone else can access it.

For college and comfpany accounts its possible they can see anything

Let me also say its probably only someone at Google for your personal account, but still.

This is the key point to understand.
Encrypting the files yourself and then using a service that also encrypts whenever you upload to them like Mega is the best possible option. They are pretty secure. It was originally founded by Kim dot com of Megauplaod fame. He's distanced himself from the company in recent years but the service they provide is on par with the other of similar type only difference is they offer 50GB free. Read into that however you like.

If you go with ANY file storage online i high suggest you use Proton Mail
They are fairly secure and their encryption is very good.
Also do not use the email associated with the file storage for anything else but file storage.
It will be easier for you to avoid fishing attempts from that email when it's being used for only 1 thing.
