Changing Our Appearance Using Crispr
04-03-2017, 02:05 PM
Is anyone familiar with Crispr? It is a new cutting edge genetic editing technique that will one day allow humans to edit their genomes. Right now they've coaxed out bad genetic mutations with animals, but they still have a lot of progress to make. Some are even saying it will eradicate cancer in 20 years time. I personally think they are being too optimistic, but then again it is hard to say what will happen. I do wonder, however, though if it is possible for them to transform a person's phenotype by editing their genes just like in the James Bond Movie Die Another Day, where the main antagonist Colonel Moon alters his appearance to to look like Gustav Graves.

What do you say about this? Do you think it's possible? or is it Science Fiction?

I think changing the appearence of an adult with Crispr is probably the lowest priority of the scientists working on it. Immunity to diseases, stopping aging, and increasing intelligence are the more pressing issues. Its definately not science fiction, but we have a long way to go.

if you understand Moore's law and exponential compounding, then you understand that that stuff that Ray Kurzweil talks about is a when question, not if.

"CRISPR"? I wouldn't be surprised if the genes in question occasionally failed to behave in the expected way because they were embarrassed to be associated with such a retarded name. It sounds like a gay dating app!

Gene manipulation?
Sure, but not in 20 years and close to nothing will reach the bottom part of the population.
Also it will be more like the movie GATTACA than any science fiction movie.

Fucking scientist are trying to make my superior genes cheaper again, first with equality theory and now with genetic editing. Fuck that.

CRISPR is one of the real (although disappointingly few) breakthroughs in genetic engineering over the past few decades, but we are really, really far away from being able to change our appearance to a desired "look."
It may seem counter-intuitive, but dramatically slowing the aging process and extending maximum lifespans will probably come a lot sooner than changing appearances. That can (possibly) be accomplished by making relatively simple alterations to a handful of metabolic pathway master-switches. But pointing to a photo of a male 10 and saying "I wanna look like that guy!"? We wouldn't even know where to begin.
With that said, I'll take a healthy lifespan reaching into the triple digits over a prettier face any day and we could potentially be able to implement such a thing within our lifetimes.

There are quite a few people already playing around with this in homegrown labs. The benefits and dangers are the same as with any kind of gene manipulation. The difference is that this allows people to play around with it in a DIY type situation that may not have any safeguards in place.

Each time a post about genome manipulation appears I go back to the
Dystopian manospheric Visions & Science thread and then I pray for all this not being true...
Tell them too much, they wouldn't understand; tell them what they know, they would yawn.
They have to move up by responding to challenges, not too easy not too hard, until they paused at what they always think is the end of the road for all time instead of a momentary break in an endless upward spiral

Has the acronym GMP (Genetically Modified Pussy) been coined yet?

It will happen, but its decades away yet.
