Thinking of joining the military...

i do have a hard on for guns, was thinking of going in as an infantry in the marines or army, but decided against it because there's no job after serving.

Exactly, all the thrills tend to be in fields with no future. Infantry is a great for a 20 year military retirement, but leaves you empty-handed once you're out.

As for Officer vs. Enlisted, sadly, a lot of officer slots are focused towards management and administration, so your typical officer ends up leading a boring life with little hands-on experience. Great if you plan to go the career route, but if you get out (voluntary or involuntary... shit happens) you're as almost as empty-handed as the enlisted man.

Honestly, the best bets are technical jobs which require a Top Secret clearance. As long as you don't have a criminal record, and you're native born, getting a TS isn't much of a problem.

Army MOS 33W is basically an IT guy with a TS clearance. That's a pretty solid start. Even if you wash out after a year or two, quite alot of companies WILL hire you for an entry level slot for just about anywhere in the world. In the same vein, anything with "analyst" in it will also be a boring, albeit highly lucrative job. UAV pilots are also a hot commodity, but with much more limited locations.

Of course, this all assumes you're relatively intelligent, and aren't a career criminal. If not, please stay the hell away from federal service.

In Summary, the conventional wisdom that "Officer is better" really only holds true if you go the 20-year retirement route, or don't know how to pick a decent MOS.

You DC guys that complain about the male / female ratio should see the dynamics on a military post. The lack of talent will make your balls shrink up to the size of raisins. Meanwhile the few decent looking girls are at all times surrounded by in shape white knights.

Also, if you happen to meet a civilian girl, your logistics for sex will suck the entire time you're lower enlisted, which is years. The military's the biggest cockblock around. It rewards being married and punishes being single.

Thinking of joining the military...

Interesting info in here guys. While in the past, I've had never considered joining the army, lately, I've been let's say more open minded to that idea than in the past as I'm quite bored here with life. Don't get me wrong, life is good here. I've good a good solid online biz, travel a lot and all but I'm feeling a kind of emptiness, that something to feel fullfilled. I want to do something to contribute to society, to make a positive and lasting impact on the lives of those around me. I've been doing a lot of thinking lately and the idea of joining the army has come into mind. And I am gathering info on joining the army. Mind you, a lof of the info posted here is from US guys who joined the US Army. I have double citizenship, French and Canadian. I'd be very interested in hearing the stories of guys who have joined the Canadian Army and what it is like to be part of it. If there are any Canadians here who have or currently are in the Canadian Army/Navy/Air Force etc...I'd love to talk to you guys and hear your thoughts on how it is. Also, is there an age limit to join?

Mixx and the other guys talking about old school upbringing, I've also had my fair share of beatings while growing up in France and I for one, am glad as it has helped me a lot to be the man I am now. Needless to say, I'm appaled by total lack of respect by kids these days towards anyone and everyone and the pussyfication or PC-poisoning of society overall at least in NA. One thing for sure, when I'll have kids, I'll raise them old school but I'd probably have to raise them either in Europe or in Asia, certainly not in NA.

All you'd need to know can probably be found here.

Thanks Athlone that is an helpful link. After going through some of the info there, I'm not sure anymore I want to be involved with the Army. I enjoy too much freedom to roam the world to do that. Thanks again.

Dash,
Get this guy to join here and post about his experiences here.

Join the Military? Do you mean the United States military?

No way. Wtf? Are you serious?

Besides the obvious safety concerns, why would you want to be a part of what's going on as a result of poor U.S. foreign policy?

1 Million Iraqi's, dead.

Sure, they believe in a different god and sometimes wear funny hats, but that doesn't mean they aren't PEOPLE.

Despite popular belief, you are not a patriot by joining the U.S. military. Quite the contrary. You'd just be another indoctrinated fool helping the powers that be spread their imperialistic ways on the world, and helping murder innocent people in the process.

In the famous words of Howard Zinn, "Dissent is the highest form of Patriotism."

Just because the Government says something doesn't make it true. They are NOT the gatekeepers of morality. History has certainly shown that.

With the amount of widely disseminated information about the state of the current U.S. Military and Iraq/Afghan wars, it absolutely AMAZES me how the recruiting offices can even get people in the door.

Oh wait, I know how they do it. The following clip summarizes it for me very well:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4h_FXeQxFQ

Quality of the video is shit, but you get the idea.

All the talk of regulation on the mortgage industry, financial markets, etc. What they need is regulation on MILITARY RECRUITERS and the lies they tell these poor 18 year old kids who come home with no legs or so mentally fucked they can't function.

Despicable.

Long story short: There are plenty of things you can do with your life without directly/indirectly being responsible for the despair of others.

Don't join the military. Become a rapper. According to Soulja Boy he's the real badass. The Army and vets are all pussies. LOL.
