When Hadiya Roderique created her Tinder profile, the 36-year-old lawyer and PhD student was told she'd be "bombarded" by messages from eager men on the online dating app. She'd put together what she thought was a witty profile, accompanied by several attractive photos. It seemed like an easy way to dive back into the dating pool after leaving a relationship.

But the anticipated flood of attention was more of a trickle: five messages in three days, and one or two messages each day thereafter. Put off and suspicious that her black skin had something to do with it, Roderique slapped her white friend's photo on the same dating profile, and watched as the messages came pouring in. Then, she tried a photo of herself, digitally altered to make her appear Caucasian, and saw even more messages filling up her inbox.

The informal experiment led Roderique to a disheartening conclusion: "People aren't as open as perhaps they claim to be."

Hadiya Roderique's dating profile photo, left, is shown alongside an image of her friend Jessica wearing the same clothes for a separate dating profile.

Roderique joined CTV's Your Morning Wednesday, to share the details of her social experiment, which highlighted what she says are some of the underlying realities of the supposedly liberal-minded dating scene in Toronto.

"When you conduct interviews with people, they generally express that they are happy to date outside their race," she said. But the lack of interest in her Tinder profile led her to suspect the opposite might be the case. "I think that people are really reluctant to reach out across a racial divide," she said.

She put her suspicions to the test by enlisting her Ph.D friend Jessica. "We're about the same height and weight and similar attractiveness, so I asked if she was willing to be my guinea pig," Roderique said.

Jessica posed for photos while wearing the same clothes Roderique had worn in her own. Then, Roderique used the photos and the contents of her own profile to create the fictional "Hadiya Blanca."

With Jessica's name attached, the profile racked up 47 messages in three days.

Roderique says she knew some might criticize the experiment by suggesting that people might have seen Jessica's photo as "cuter" or "more approachable." She added that her original profile received approximately the same number of views as the one with Jessica's photo. "People would look, but they wouldn't touch in my case," she said.

So Roderique took her experiment a step further, using photo editing techniques to change her own image so she would appear to be a blonde-haired, blue-eyed Caucasian.

"She was the most popular of all," Roderique said, adding that her race-swapped profile received 64 messages in three days. She also received messages from several men whom she'd messaged from her black profile, and who had not answered her back.

"You always wonder what it's like on the other side and I lived it and found out," Roderique said. "I wasn't expecting the difference to be that stark."

Roderique suggests people of colour might find more success with dating offline, or on niche websites.

The alternative is braving a dating scene that is largely geared toward the majority population of Caucasians, many of whom appear not to be as open-minded as they say.

"I think that people say one thing, but act another way behind the secrecy and safety of their computer," she said. "You'd like to think that you're being seen as a person, but this (experiment) was a signal that I wasn't."

I think this article speaks for itself, but here are my two cents:

- She's not that attractive, and is 36, and therefore irrespective of race should not expect a ton of attention on dating sites

- Her "altered photo" with blonde wig looks ridiculous, still I guess some guys were into it

- Her white friend is about as attractive as she herself; the increased attention there is probably the result of racial preference.

I'm white and I don't think I'm alone in preferring white women. I think this woman's issue has more to do with her inability to land a decent black man than white men's lack of interest in her (which really shouldn't matter, no one is entitled to a partner and definitely not one of another race when most people have an in-group preference).

I do wonder if women are capable of either empathy or self-knowledge.

'I'm way past my prime and no one will date me? must be racism!'

The shit women will think up to keep from admitting to themselves that they've long ago crashed into the wall.

A stark response is - no. They are incapable of any real empathy.
A cynics response it that they are only capable of empathy where it will allow some benefit to them.

Aside from a mothers empathy. It's probably best to prepare for the worst & hope for the best in this context.

Edit. On the notion of preparing for the worst :

I'd rather fuck a dark black chick than a mixed girl. I don't like that odd skin tone. The more confident ones maximize it with the colors they wear instead of being ashamed like this bitch.

I'm a white guy and I usually don't find black women attractive. However, I do think she is good looking. WB. She's more attractive than her white friend and certainly better than herself in her ridiculous whiteface albino powder shot.

Her bitching about the preferences of men is rich. I have no doubt in my mind any dude less than 5'9 has no shot with her and she's probably shot down a ton of dudes in her past for various identity reasons like race, education level, employment.

Why I don't find her attractive:
1) 36 years old
2) Weave (Those braids are not her hair)
3) Entitled
4) She is not ugly, but not particularly attractive

For the record, actual genetic lighter skinned black girls are attractive-That ashy, blond wig, pasty monstrosity she made it is a crime against nature. Her white friend is cute and with a few drinks in me I could see a one night stand possibly.

Having a racial, weight, gender, age or religious preference is wrong you goddamn bigot! You close your eyes and just accept whatever thing chooses you. Make sure you spend all your money on it or you are a cheap bigot!

How epic would it be to hear a TV interviewer ask her: "Why are you 36 and swiping for 'dates' on Tinder? Shouldn't you be married & raising teenagers?"

She's ugly. Her white friend is a borderline case who might be pretty decent if her clothes and everything else were on point. I'm having a lot of trouble believing the black girl can't find guys in an English speaking part of Canada with the supposed incredible thirst and lack of quality there. I say her standards are just way too high.

Yeah, this bitch can absolutely go and fuck herself. She'll still stick a picture on OKC or Match or whatever and gain ample messages and options in a matter of minutes, despite being painfully average. If I'm not entitled to my 10/10 goddess with big tits and long flowing blonde hair, then she definitely has no grounds to be complaining at all.

Just for fun, I should make an OKC/Tinder profile and see how many messages I get within an hour.

Agreed.

I think one of the elements that works very much against her, is that anyone wanting to get married would want to know why she had not found anyone in probably two decades or so of dating. The fear is that she is either too fickle to remain with anyone for any period of time (implying that whoever married her would be divorced raped eventually) or that she is completely nuts.

I took more of a look at the photos. While part of the drop in messages maybe race, I think most, if not all, is that the other photos look better than she does.

On the photoshopped photo with her all caucasian, it looks like they may have made her face thinner also. That would make her look thinner and younger. They also made her hair longer than in the photos of her which makes her look younger. The photos of her with her hair hidden by a hat or bound up gives one the impression that her hair is shorter, and looks older.

The photo of her friend is a mostly full body shot, and makes that friend look thinner than the upper torso and above photo or the one with her hair hidden by a hat of her. Both of her photos look like she is angling to hide that she may be a SIF (or becoming one) and obscure her body profile.

People are able to extrapolate an amazing amount just from a few things. I remember one time, when I returned from a visit to Lughansk, that I showed one of my relatives some photos of my trip. The first photo had a shot of my friend Tanya and I next to a memorial at a plaza near the downtown. The other person immediately remark, "Wow, she's hot". I was somewhat surprised that he could tell that from the photo, since it was February, cold, and Tanya was wearing a heavy winter coat, scarf, big hat and boots. Apparently, he was able to extrapolate, from just her boots, what the rest of her body looked like.

Nobody who wants children would be interested in a 36 year-old woman lest he run the risk of having kids with autism or Asperger's. Any older, and the risk for Down's Syndrome increases exponentially. Raising kids is hard enough. Taking care of special needs kids would be excruciating. Who will then care for them when you are too old and frail or deceased?
