Do all or most hostels have a way to lock up your things when you're not there? I once stayed at ski/snowboard hostel where your only option for storing valuables was putting them in your backpack or luggage and then throwing that on the bed--not really secure.

Also, is there an upper age limit where you start to become "that weird old guy" in the hostel? I was in my late 20's when I stayed at the place above and I kinda became self-conscious of that, surrounded by so many recent high school graduates.

The Panama hostel lunas castle is a really good party hostel, The club/bar is downstairs, don't expect sleep on the weekends....This video was filmed while I was there it really capture my experience in Panama

I debated added a panama hostel haha, although I was thinking Aqua Lounge in bocas. Luna's Castle was definitely a fun night. Captured the Belgian flag from there and the 50 cent beer night, while also unknowingly drinking in a snake area at the edge of the canal and going back to some random guys 2 story penthouse where I closed on the rooftop during sunrise. Cabbed back to Luna's to get my suitcase and never slept in the bed haha.

@alpha_romero
I personally don't lock anything up for the most part, but basically every hostel has lockers or some option. Regarding age. I'm 28 and I feel fine at this point. Rarely meet guys less than 21-22, and no one has ever complained about there being too many 18 year old girls around.

Sounds about right.

I worked at a couple of hostels throughout Europe in my early twenties. It's quite literally like shooting fish in a barrel, you have a revolving door of women coming and going who are generally there to get drunk, party then leave after a couple of days and since you're working there, know the city/language and best places to visit you automatically have a lot more social capital.

That being said over time I found myself seeking out local's more and more. These days I don't think i'd feel too comfortable in hostels, especially party ones. But god damn it was fun when I did.

I can second Retox, that place is on another level. It's too much for me, I mean I get that it's a party hostel but jesus christ.

Are hostels in Europe good all year around? I worked on a hostel on a small but tourist town in Brazil for like two months, although I hooked up a couple of times I really didn't feel this "hostel god factor" lol, though I wasn't living at the hostel and that probably screwed my chances (I was offered but rent was so cheap that I figured out it was better to just rent to have my own space to cook and etc.), at least I was being paid enough to have a cool place while having the hostel experience.

I actually looked for a hostel job during that summer because I figured out it would be like shooting fish in a barrell, the real issue I had when I was working there was the lack of constant talent, there were probably a couple of decent girls every weekend(and we were in high season), but nothing so extraordinary and also a lot of guys, the social area wasn't close to the reception (and the owners had someone with an eye on me so I couldn't just be a slacker) so it wasn't so easy to talk to the girls unless they came to me, I think on some backpacker spots (like the OP suggest: Prague, Budapest, mediterranean cities) on summer it must be a goldmine, not sure about most of the year. I definitely want to try it in Europe some day.

That was like 3 or 4 years ago, I'm surprised the hostel system is still strong with things like Airbnb on the game, I remember thinking how ridiculous the prices were sometime compared with my seasonal furnished apartment (though I found it on the local ads, so no gringo price).

I'm not sure. I worked in summer and winter in Europe, it was obviously a lot better in the summer.. winter died down a lot and it get's dark very early. I wouldn't say I felt that 'god factor' either but it helped a lot that I was living in/right next to the hostel as a staff room and knew the best bars, so it was easy to show girls around and whatnot.

Yeah. This was one of the reason's I started focusing more on pursuing local women because the talent coming through the doors was inconsistent.

Yeah that setup sounds difficult. The places i worked were smaller hostels where we pretty much ran the hostel ourselves. We would have the manager come in during the day, but we were in charge of everything at night.. so if the private room was vacant and there was no bookings for the next day you could just take it for you and your girl.

For people that have been staying in hostels for awhile, how have Airbnb and Couchsurfing affected ratio/talent of females at hostels?

I'm assuming any women under 30 who isn't overweight could find a free Couchsurfing host in an major city within a few hours notice. Many lame guys on couchsurfing cook for girls, pick them up at the airport/bus station and basically subsidize their entire trip. Most backpackers and hostel types are cheap as fuck so I'm assuming lots of girls are taking the CS option over the sometimed penny-pinching hostel that rents out towels and lockers for a fee.

And for the girls that are traveling in groups that are too huge to stay with one Couchsurfing host, im guessing they are doing Airbnb. If they are a larger group they've already got the social aspect of the hostel covered, so they arent missing much.

Retox was one hell of a time and made me feel like I was in the movie "The Beach" with Leonardo DiCaprio . Don't think I ever felt so free in my life like in those 4 days...

Some of those girls still end up at the hostel clubhouse to hang out. A lot of hostels don't care if you come drink at the bar, even if you're not a hostel patron. I've met several Couchsurfing girls at hostels. It also helps if their guy Couchsurfing host is sort of a creep and they're looking to be out of the house as much as possible. It makes for a good excuse for her to stay in your room. [Image: banana.gif]

Do you prefer a private room in a hostel or a dorm? If it's a dorm, do you choose between a smaller sized dorm or a big one? For example, 4 beds vs 12 beds.
I really can't sleep in a room with 5 other persons snoring and coughing if i'm sober... [Image: smile.gif]

Smaller dorm with 4 or 5. The ones with 8 to 12 tend to share one bathroom and fuck that. There's usually only like a $1 difference in price in those dorms in South America.

Hostels are a gold mine but man can they be frustrating especially if you are in a dorm. Never again for me; frankly I'd rather cut my stay in half and get a private room rather than get stuck in a dorm and worried about where I can bang.

@assipier it's a toss up. A small room with some bros is perfect, but if you get a pretentious Asian chick that wants to go read at 9pm you are screwed. The big dorms you can get away with more because most likely you aren't the only one. At my last hostel I had a 10 bed dorm (yes I prefer privates but it was carnival so $$$) and one morning I woke up with 5/10, but 4 of them had 2 people each.

Stayed in a hostel a few times around various European locations.. only ever got laid once... but to be fair i wasn't out to get laid i use them as a base to go visit a new city. When in Malaga Spain i stayed in one and met 2 American girls.. we went to the bars together.. came back and i ended up shagging one of them in the common room. I never got a chance to get her facebook or contact or anything because the next morning they had disappeared when i woke up!

Has anyone noticed there's nearly always some guy with long hair that plays a guitar in the common room?

You do come across some weirdos as well.. I remember one Romanian guy was kicked out for masturbating in a open toilet cubical for everyone to see.. and also there was this Turk who never left the dorm .. i felt uneasy leaving my valuables in there even in the locker.

Slumming it in a hostel isn't a terrible way to stay in an area, especially during the weekdays when the local nightlife is pretty much dead. Private rooms aren't too expensive, and you'll have the luxury of not having puke all over the bathroom floor and deal with cock blocking neighbors. Those cheap weekday ragers though are sometimes sausage fests and some backpacker girls do become 49ers due to the thirst.

I didn't want to start a separate thread for this question, but can we have forum members way in on the best party hostels they have been to in terms of ease of getting laid and in what city they are?

I will be leaving the US for the first time in 5 years during the Christmas/New Years holidays and I've decided my best bet for cheap accommodation and getting laid is a private in a great party hostel. I will be in London for a week and also Amsterdam for a week. Any idea what the best hostels are in those cities as well as any others across the world?

PS I know I can check Hostelworld but I'm hoping to get some input from forum members because the forum is more geared toward what I'm looking for then other sites.

London- St Christopher's Village or Generator
Amsterdam- Flying Pig

I'd book asap though if you are looking for a private during NYE. Also, for NYE I would advise maybe not a hostel, since it will be a pretty easy night to get laid and you don't really want to deal with logistics of a hostel.. just a tip.

For around the world, read my original post on this thread, I covered my top ones.

The one that I have to add that I've been to recently is Far Out Hostel in Ios. If you can't get laid basically every night there in July/August you aren't doing your job.

@Veul Occasionally. Even as old as 60-70, which I hate. Most of the top party hostels have an age limit of 40 these days though.

My hostel experience so far:

Madrid: Cats Hostel- 1 bang, easy logistic, but not that much os a party hostel. Madrid has not a true party hostel, at least that I know;
Barcelona: already stayed in Twentytu, St. Cristopher's Inn and Kabul. The last one is the best one, with pub crawls everynight and sedent groups of girls. Got the bang with hostel costumers in all of them;
Krakaw: The little Havana Party Hostel- Nice bar crawl, free drinks, etc. No bang, but only stayed for 1 night in my defense [Image: biggrin.gif];
Budapest: The Hive Party Hostel- Good alternative to Retox. Easy reception girls, me and my buddy gamed them on check-in and got the deal the day after off work. My best bar crawl ever was in this hostel, ending up in Retox (thumbs up for Budapest Hostels);
Riga: The Naughty Squirell- good dimension, has bar crawls, and nice girls. tried to game this smoking hot latvian from the reception but only stayed for 1 night [Image: sad.gif]
Tallinn: The Monk's Bunk: 1 night only, beer pong, maded out with a girl in a balcony with the boyfriend inside after defeating them in the beer pong tournament, but obviously could not go any further;
Stockholm: Generator must be the best one. I have stayed in The City Backpackers Hostel, good enough.
Copenhagen: Downtown Hostel: Huge bar in the reception, completely easy to take girls upstairs. Got the bang with a lithuanian met in the bar on the 1st night and a dutch (also from the bar) on the 2nd.

I always try to mix hostels and airbnb, but since my trips are always for few days, I believe hostels are a better option, especialy if you don't know any locals or you don't have that much time to invest in the city/pipelining

I am trying to book everything asap, but the trip is a little more complicated than I'd like. I have to figure out exactly what days I will be off from school, and I will also be going on the trip with my parents. I was originally planning to get an airbnb for the three of us but after looking at the options and remembering this thread from many months ago I thought it'd be best for me to stay in a hostel and get them an airbnb near me. I plan to take them around the cities during the day and try to collect numbers as I go along, but do my best to game hard in the hostel and at bars/clubs at night after they go to the apartment.

At this point I am more concerned with getting flags then anything else, but also I want to gather as many notches as possible as well.

Digital I already repped you several months back and you totally deserve it. I'd rep you again if I could. Thanks, and I'll look into the hostels you mentioned.

Another question though if anyone wants to answer. I will have about two weeks off approximately between December 18 to January 4. I want to split my time evenly between London and Amsterdam. How would you guys recommend I split it? I feel like I should try to be in London for New Years.

Times two. I am going to Croatia in August for a few days. Will spend the last in Zagreb (due to early flight), and I have booked Chillout Hostel Zagreb. First Night will be in Dubrovnik, in Youth Hostel Dubrovnik.

The remaining 3 nights will probably be spent in Hvar. I am trying to convince my buds to spend the last of those 3 nights in Novalja. I think we are going for airbnb on the islands.

For notches - Sail Croatia is you best (but expensive) bet

Snooze and Booze in Split is solid, and the pub crawls there are absolutely nuts. Hvar was a blast too - I stayed at Luka's Lounge, the group dinners and unlimited wine were amazing. Not a crazy party hostel tho, I think Hvar Out is the party one there. The pub crawls there start with an hour open bar on a boat which is cool.

Honestly the key in Croatia is just having a convenient private room. This time of year all the locals are working anyway, so you'll be picking up randoms from bars or on pub crawls and you just need a convenient fuck pad.
