I've got so much awesome info from this forum from posters who are not only very knowledgeable in gaming/travelling but also about living the location independent lifestyle that I wanted to give back someway in my modest way. So to all of you who have a locked Iphone 4, here's how I unlocked mine in less than 2 minutes and I'm sharing it with all of you for free.

First of all, the different options are:
- go to chinese markets where you live and they'll charge you upwards of $80 to unlock it. Not cool.
- there are tons of softwares/programmes/schemes being sold online that claim to unlock any iphone. Maybe they work, maybe they don't. Haven't tried them. They usually go for 19.95 to 30 bucks.
- if you're in Asia go to electronic stores and have it unlocked in a few minutes for about 20 bucks. This is what I initially did back in July 2011 in BKK, I went to MBK and onto the 3rd floor (which is where all the electronics/cell phone floor is located) and had it done in 2 minutes literally for 20 bucks.

The place I went to unlock my phone gave me a little pocket size piece of paper with the instructions on how to unlock it or if there is any updates/problem down the road, to just repeat the same steps that I'm going to share with you guys. So I had my phone unlocked at MBK in BKK but upon my return to Canada, I called my phone carrier to have them activate my micro sim. But then, I made a stupid mistake that I still can't understand how or why I did. What I did was basically to update my iphone upon syncing and as a result, I had to restore it to its original state. Which resulted in un-doing the unlocking. So I searched for a few days for that little piece of paper ) where the instructions to unlock it myself were written. So I found it on Saturday and followed the steps and was able to unlock my iphone 4 (version 4.3.5).

So here's what you need to unlock your iphone without programmes/softwares or anything complicated like that. Just follow the following steps and it'll unlock your iphone 4 in less than 2 minutes:

Steps to unlock your Iphone 4 (Mine is version 4.3.5 as it got updated and restored but works with any version).

Step 0: Go to Ebay and get GEVEY PRO ($3.99).
Once you've received GEVEY PRO, follow these steps EXACTLY as outlined below:

Step 1: Turn off your Iphone and insert your Simcard and GEVEY Sim together within the metal sim tray provided.

Step 2: Tun on your Iphone and wait for the SIM welcome menu to show and then select "accept".

Step 3: At the beginning "no service" message will show on your iphone. DON'T do anything and wait until you see one signal bar appear on the top left corner.

Step 4: After you see the signal bar dial "112" and hang up within 2 seconds.

Step 5: Turn on the Airplane mode and then turn it off right away. Your Iphone will show "SIM Failure" and then "No SIM Card Installed".

Step 6: Once the "No SIM Card Installed" message shows up turn on the Airplane mode again and turn it off right away. The "SIM Failure" message will show and the signal will show up after a few seconds.

VOILA! Your Iphone 4 is unlocked and can be used anywhere in the world with ANY carrier. You just saved yourself 80 bucks if you were to have it done through any of the "specialised stores" in China Towns or Chinese stores near you. Or at least 20 bucks with those questionable "programmes" online. This is the safest easiest fastest way to unlock it yourself in 2 minutes or less. FREE. Just follow the instructions as I have outlined them. ENJOY guys!

Note: IF After all the above steps, there is still no signal, power off your Iphone, switch it back on and repeat all the steps above from the beginning (steps 1 through 6) and that will do it.

I was under the impression that cell phones weren't locked into a provider in Canada. Is that not true?

The real pain with iPhone unlocks is that they're usually gone after the update. Is this unlock update-proof, or it will go south when Apple releases iOS x.next?

Iphones in Canada are locked and "supposed to work" only with the provider you bought it from and have a contract with.

Not sure if it's upgrade proof but as I wrote, after I returned from Thailand where I had it unlocked, I upgraded and restored it to its original state but was still able to unlock it again using the steps outlined above.

When you had it unlocked how was using it to download apps etc? The app store works off an email account right? I don't remember if you had to have a credit card set up on the account also.

I am thinking of my next big trip and I'd like to have an unlocked iPhone. On eBay there are some factory unlocked ones so that might be the way I will go, so hopefully they don't get reset after updates.

Edit 1: On a side note - anyone know what level iPhone and up is still pretty useful? Meaning do I really need to get an iPhone 6 to get the value or does an iPhone 4 in this day and age still work ok around the world? I know some operating system upgrades may slow a phone down, but all I am looking for is basic stuff like Tinder, google maps, instagram, etc.

Edit 2: Looks like at a minimum I should be shooting for an iPhone 5.

5 and newer Verizon models are already unlocked.

All models of the 6 and newer are factory unlocked.

Verizon 5 has AT&T/T-Mobile HSPA+ bands, but not LTE
Verison 5s has AT&T/T-Mobile HSPA+ bands and AT&T LTE bands

Unlocks for AT&T iPhone 4/4s are dirt cheap on eBay, but I wouldn't get a 4, they can only run iOS 7 and the 4s is nearing EOL on the current iOS. I'd imagine 9 runs REALLY slow on a 4s too.

Ugh. I'm in Manila and I stupidly upgraded my old iphone 4s before leaving to Osx 9.3.5, so right now I'm restricted to wireless on my 5s but I want to jailbreak the 4s get a local number and use a globe sim.
I've been futzing on the internet for an hour here. I had no jailbreaking was this complicated. Live and learn.

Unless any of you guys out there have a better idea I'll probably hit a shop tomorrow and see if I can just pay the 20 bucks.
