Running a poker house

I am thinking about starting a poker house when I move to Korea.

Will prob make business cards and hand them out at bars and at the local casino.

Ive been playing since I was 18 and know all the ends and outs.

This is a great way to make extra money, 5-5 games in particularly.

You probably should.

If you are talking about a few friends, you most likely have nothing to worry about.

But if you are trying to run a real "operation" and really make some CASH, you really need to think this thing through. And have a bunch of people you can really trust on your team.

Not sure how the Korean scene is, but when word gets around (and it always does) you have a poker room, with CASH in it you make yourself a target to be robbed (especially if you don't have "heavies" backing you. And even if you do, there are plenty of people with Heaters and Ski Masks).

Who knows, it may never happen, but when you are facedown on the floor with a gun in the back of your head, you will probably have second thoughts.

Even if you live, the fun part will be paying back all the high rollers at your card game that got heisted as well.

This is real talk.

Drug Dealers (and I mean heavy ones too) and illegal poker operators get robbed all the time.

The people that pull this stuff off have been involved their whole life. Not people that say, "I am thinking about starting a poker house".

Im not talking about a serious operation.

Im talking something in between a friendly small poker game and a decent active poker game/house.

the places I play in the US the doors are locked with cameras and the owners all are strapped.

wont be nothing that serious lol

just looking to make some extra spending cash, like 500-1000 a month.

I used to go to one here in Argentina in a shady Korean neighborhood.

He would give out credit, like if you brought 1k he'd give 1k if you brought 5k he'd give 5k credit. He kept really good records of everything and most times people would pay debts at the local casino and he would pay winners there as well.

Make sure to count all the chips to make sure people don't bring any from outside and that the cards don't get marked.

Make sure there are absolutely no guns or drugs, just cigs and alcohol and absolutely no fighting. Always calm arguments right away and straighten shit out. Don't let shady people play at the game.

Poker players and underground games get a bad rap. Unless you are for tons of cash with shady people you should be fine. Most of us would play there cause the rake at the casino is huge and because its a more relaxed environment. There were no guns, drugs, threats or cheating, just a bunch of regular guys, most that learned about poker because of the boom and like it.

So yea be careful, but sounds like good business.

haha. this whole small scale gambling stuff has been on the back of my mind for quite some time too. after having watched BOILER ROOM, and all that doe being stashed, haha it sounds like a fun thing to start up. but as always, the what ifs* of it, makes me shy away from trying to put the idea into risky reality.

so yeah, take all necessary risk assessments into place, and it should be fine.

and if u wanna expand or go regional, well, hit me up. haha. im thinking, manila. haha!

my room is too small for a game. unless i can find another place ill just have to stick to being a player.

even if i find someone with room, ill have to split or take a cut of the profits and then it wouldnt even be worth it.

Just got a new apartment. Nice living room. Thinking about running a game. Doing my research right now. This town has 30k in it but oil money is strong. Will scout for a month or two to find the local games.

I just need 15-25 consistent players, a gorgous server, a dealer and back-up dealer that can control a room and I will be straight. Hardest thing is finding the right players.

I will keep this thread open with my progress, thoughts, and eventual opening. I dont think I will open till May or June. Probably run on Saturdays and Sundays. Rake is 10% with a 10 dollar cap, free beer, food, i wont open any books. Consider getting the UFC fights. Myself and a roommate plays so we will play only to kick off a game or keep it running.

Biggest concern are guns. I will make sure my players are decent drunks with money to burn, but being in Texas alot of players carry. I did, my roommate has three, and I have been at games were guns have been drawn. I think as long as I have the right players then I should be straight. We will see.

The cycle of disrespect can start with just an appetizer.
