The dollar vs. foreign currencies

Some south american currencies:

Argentina: 1 usd = 3.64 pesos
Brazil: 1 usd = 2.37 reals
Mexico: 1 usd = 15.4 pesos (!!)

Even given the purchasing power parity (factoring inflation), I would say it's awesome to be traveling right now.

I was in Mexico last Aug and was getting murdered with 1:11 mexican pesos.

I've seen Brazil at around 1:2.9 when I was there in April 2003, but for Mexico and Argentina (and probably other countries) it's pretty unprecedented exchange rate.

I was in Brazil when it was 1:1.7. If i go today it'll be like a 40% off sale.

Argentina was 1:3.1 when i went, so smaller savings there.

I'm glad I'm rolling out in a couple days. Better hurry up and do this trip before the dollar's rally reverses. That was part of my motivation to go, to take advantage of this rally. Also, now is a good time, it's just past peak tourist season so prices should be lower, yet the weather should still be fairly warm(or tolerable in Patagonia). I'm ready to go!

It really is insane. Last June it was around $1,600 Colombian pesos to the dollar and a few weeks ago when I was there it was at $2600+ pesos!

Ridiculous [Image: banana.gif]
