Mexico, Playa del Carmen asdfksheet 2017

There have already been some great posts on Playa del Carmen. (here and here) As I have lived there recently for some time, I thought it'd be a great idea to post a datasheet on my departure so you can decide wether Playa is for you.

When to go there: If you want to bang sweet Argentinan 6-7s or Mexican "bad bitches" (semi-models/dancers). Also for hanging around in bars, at the sea and snagging up one of the many tourists coming to slut it up. Good place to practice your social skills, bad place to settle down and raise a family.

When not to go there: You don't have a thing for the above niches or hate socialising. If you want to bang good girls that are Mexican. Oh wait, if you want to bang good girls, period. You prefer bars and only need a few clubs. For a short bang trip with solely tourists, there are options that are more affordable and more efficient. You are not able to go in with an open-minded.

In this already legendary asdfksheet, I will focus on two things:
- Two great niches (Argentinan girls and Mexican dancers) and how to game them + info on the solid stream of sloppy tourists shutting it up
- Practical details of making your stay awesome

About Playa
As mentioned earlier, Playa Del Carmen is a touristy beach-town in the Riviera Maya. It is easy accessible from the US, but since flights have been getting cheaper there is a lot of influx from European tourists as well. They come here for the beach, the nightlife and the overpriced day trips.

To me, Playa felt like a cheaper version of Miami. It's a city for great parties and a good diversity of girls, although the Miami club offerings are greater in number and more diverse and the city overall is less ratchet. However, there are a lot of bars.

All with all, Playa is small but very active with something for everyone. There are three groups of girls that deserve special notion.

The girls
I feel this is the most important addition to already existing datasheets. There are three groups to consider:

- Argentinans
- Dancers/models
- Tourists

Before I go through each of them, let me first warn you that Playa is not the best city to go after nice local Mexican girls. Although it is possible, it's not very practical because it's a tourist town and you won't be far from the first to try. Besides, these girls are not stupid: they know that you are likely to leave. If you really want nice local Mexican girls, focus on the influx of job-seekers that come in every week. They are new to the experience, and why not be their guide?

Now, on to the planned programming:

Argentinan girls
For some reason there are a lot of Argentinan girls working in the restaurants and bars in the main tourist area. They are spontaneous, outgoing and mostly in the beginning of their twenties. I haven't seen a lot of stunners, but a lot of 6-7's. If you go eat at the restaurants or drink at the bars especially at the northern end of the 5th (the main street), it's easily to meet these girls.

For this group, I recommend social circle game. Introduce and be introduced. You can also spot them later at a bar and then go from there, but it's best to lay a foundation by chatting when you meet them. (they are happy to) It's not like there thousands of Argentinan girls here, but cute 20 year old somethings that are easy accessible and open to chat with a well-equipped RVF member all in a square kilometer? Mambo jambo!

Dancers and models

If you like Mexican girls who look like they spend all day doing squats, look no further then playa. There are hot girls everywhere who spend way too much time in the gym or in other ways toning their bodies, because it's part of their job. Think dancers and "models", mostly girls trying to break in in those industries.

With these girls, daygame is the best approach. I recommend standing at the 10th (a street parallel to the 5th) and approaching when they walk by. You'll catch them off-guard and not in a group, where approaching can be tricky. If the toned and strong 20-year something wannabe model/dancer Mexican bad girl is your type, Playa is candy land. Although I don't really care for these girls, I routinely broke my neck from turning it too fast when another girl with an insane butt walked by.

Tourist slutties
Now, this is where it gets interesting.

Girls like to have fun, right? Playa is no exception. There are a lot of white girls around, Americans as well as Europeans. They stay in shitty hostels, couch surf or get a hotel room together for either a cultural experience (which apparently you can have around Playa) and/or slut it up at night. During high season, this group of course explodes.

There are also Russians, Asians, Latin-Americans etc. but in lesser numbers.

Because these girls are everywhere, you have a lot of chances to approach. Do beach game, if it's your thing. Going to hostels and hanging out in common spaces is also an easy way. They are everywhere. Nightlife has expensive drinks, but I used it for some low-hanging fruit game since daygame is not my strong suit, and it worked well.

Bonus: If you intend to stay a longer time, consider hosting girls through couchsurfing. There are a lot of surfers coming through, and if you have a good profile Playa is really a great place.

Would I recommend Playa solely for tourists? Not necessarily. There are bigger and better places, because slutty white girls acting crazy in bars and clubs is far from a small niche. If this is what you are after, then I'd recommend going in high-season since this is when Playa gets ratchet.

Low-season vs. high-season
The high season is from december until february. This means that prices increase and all the local people try to make as much money as possible during this time. A rental that might go for 600$ a month during low-season might triple during high-season - but more on that in prices.

Does this mean that during low season Playa is empty? No, far from it. It's more that during high season the place is swamped, and that during low season it's fairly busy and buzzing with tourists.
Een during the very humid months of October/november there are people from all over the globe.

I do recommend to check in before you go so you can assess the local situation.

Social life
Because Playa thrives on tourists, the "locals" (of whom a lot moved there to work) are easy to connect with and have an entrepreneurial mindset. Everyone on the ground has a little business going, wether it's renting out apartments or selling goods and services to tourists. They are used to people coming and going, and have great social skills. I had a great time hanging around with the (semi-)locals.

Making friends is easy if you are outgoing and like to chat with people. A friendly conversation during the day can easily lead to having a late dinner and going out together at night with a big group.

If you are less outgoing, you can also go for example to a salsa class and paddle board course and meet people there. Most of the time you'll find people to hang out and go out with.

If you stay for a little bit longer in Playa, you will spot a lot of familiar faces around town. This because the lively area (including nightlife and restaurants) is congregated around a car-free street that lies parallel to the beach and can be walked down in about 20 minutes. It is called the fifth, and as mentioned in this datasheet LINK this is were the magic happens. Spotting one of your buddies or female friends there can easily lead to more hanging out.

Opportunities on couchsurfing
Let me repeat this again: Playa is a great place to host your couch. There is great CS traffic through this city, and there is so much to show a surfer that it's just too easy. Second best option is to get a 2-bedroom and AirBnB one of them to a few lucky females. Shout out to the playas in the CS thread.

Getting around
Taxis are cheap. Very cheap. Expect to pay not a lot more then 3-5$ to go to a suburb. Most of the time, you'll be paying less then 2$ for anything around the main area of the town. That said: you can also walk because it's fairly small in size. Other datasheets have provided great information on how to get into and out of town.

Things to do
Well, since Playa is a beach town there is of course a sea with all kinds of activities in and around it. There are several smaller islands to visit and adventures to be had in jungle and/or animal parks. These places are fairly overpriced because for a great part they service the American customer, whom doesn't mind overpaying for everything. One entry ticket to an adventure park might set you back 100$, and "swimming with dolphins" can easily cost 80$ as well.

It's easy to find additional information, but my point is that you won't be bored.

Where to stay
This all depends on how long you go.

In high season, everyone who owns a hotel or a condo tries to squeeze as much money out of it as possible. My recommendations are as follows:

- Try to find a cheap apartment rental through Facebook groups. A lot of owners will do a month to month as long as you imply you are likely to stay for three months ore more. For $350 a month, you can have a simple apartment with aircon that's less then ten minutes from the beach and nightlife. For just a little more, you can have a place that looks a lot nicer.

- If you have friends in that area, ask them if they know anyone who has a cool rental. For locals, there are a lot of cheap deals available. These usually come up if you have lived there for a longer period of time. I have heard stories of people renting full houses for less then $200 a month, but I have no personal experience in the matter. Because of the entrepreneurial mindset of the people in Playa, knowing someone who knows someone can get you a great deal.

- If you want to be closer then 5 minutes walking from the beach or the nightlife, you will pay more. Personally, I don't think it's worth it. Shaving 5 minutes off a pull in exchange for paying 200$ extra doesn't make sense to me.

- If you want to do a shorter stay, there are a lot of offerings in terms of hotels/hostels/AirBnB. How much more expensive this is then a monthly rental depends on when you come. There are great variations in price, but as a general rule you can expect more then double (and in some cases 10-fold) unless you like to stay in some hostel dorm.

Cartel influence and crime
As you might know, Mexico is corrupt. Very corrupt. It's basically run by cartels.

Now, because Playa thrives on tourists, there is a "white flag" situation where they don't fight their wars. That doesn't mean there isn't a cartel presence. Local business owners have to work with them, there are a lot of drugs (it's a great market for the cartels) and the different gangs have their own territory.

Some no-go's:
- Don't sell drugs in Playa. That is if you want to live, at least. If the cartels find out you might disappear.
- Don't disrespect the drug pushers. On the 5th, you can hardly put one foot in front of the other without someone offering you drugs. Accept, ignore them or politely decline, but don't act confrontational. If you are a tourist, the odds of something happening are small - but don't push it cause every now and then shit happens over there.
- Several people in my social circle have been robbed, burglarised or drugged (in drinks). These are not your typical tourist dumbasses, but people who know what they are doing. Whats yourself gents, and take the proper precautions.

Summary
Playa might not be the best party town in the world, but it offers two very interesting niches (Argentinan 7's and Mexican girls with incredible toned bodies) and a solid stream of horny tourists. It's easy to connect with the people living there and there's enough to do in terms of activities to not get bored. The cost of living is cheap if you do a monthly rental, and the town is easy to get around.

Last but not least: walk to the northern end of the 5th and turn left. Walk until you see an Oxxo. (insert joke here) Cross the street, pass the liquor store on the corner and get a taco de pollo at the dingy looking taco stand. Eat said taco with green salsa, moan like an owl having an orgasm and then come back here to give me a rep +1. You're welcome.

Good writeup. I've never been to Playa, but have been to Cancun a few times. Sounds like Playa is a more genuine experience with somewhat less of the tourist chaos. Good to know on how cheap it is to live there though.

Also an excellent point on the crime/violence that has the potential to happen. It's true even in Cancun, the tourist mecca of Central America. I was at Mandala and two of my buddies went to the bathroom, got cornered by a group of locals with knives, and had to hand over all of their cash. Naturally, the perps then disappeared into the swarms of the club.

Mexico offers a ton of fun and a ton of game opportunity, but "use at your own risk" is 100% valid.

Also, and I'm sure this applies to Playa as well as Cancun: Do not piss in public. If one night you decide to punch someone in the face in front of a cop, and the next night you decide to take a piss in an alley and a cop sees you...you're going to jail the second night.

Well, there are a lot of tourists so it feels a bit chaotic in the main street. However, it's not anything like the Cancun party zone. Cancun has an extremely different feel. Playa attracts a crowd that loves to have fun.
