Florionapolis, is it worth it?

I'm flying from Buenos Aires to Iguassu Falls, and then after that, I'm not sure what place I'll hit next. I can go to Sao Paulo, Rio...or now I'm wondering about Florionapolis. A one way ticket I just checked is damn near $300US, which is crazy considering it's about the distance that L.A. is from San Francisco, or at least it looks that way on the map. Maybe I can bus it if it's not too long a trip.

Anyways, what's the selling point of Flor to make it worth the expense of getting there? I don't know too much about it though I've heard it has awesome beaches.

I heard good things, but don't sacrifice your time if it means spending less time chasing ass with me in Rio.

Florionapolis, is it worth it?

Hey!

I spent a week in Rio, a week in Floripa and couple of days in Foz do Iguacu and in Sao Paolo in Januray and got a decent taste of these very different places.

Okay so Floripa.. It's very very different from Rio. It's clean, beautiful and caters for the rich mainly south american tourists. I reckon the high season (Xmas-mid january) is over now, so I dont know how busy it's atm. I think it's a bit more quiet since the holidays are over. This is a good thing if you're looking for uncrowded waves for surfing (and the surf gets really big in april), but partywise it's not too good

In January it was c-r-a-z-y! I have never ever seen so many hot girls in one place before this club "Parador 12", P12, which had this amazing day party. It was like MTV Awards.. just beautiful looking girls dancing in bikinis by the pool, lots of fake tits and muscular guys as well. And expensive booze (but for me as a europen, it was okay)! Of course these girls were also more snobbish than the earthy cariocas in Rio, but i guess you cant avoid this as the girls were the hottest in brazil! Especially many business ppl from Sao Paolo go to Floripa for the summer. Also some Argentinians.

About activities: Floripa has a good surf and you can also do things like cayaking, paragliding, motorcycling, mountain biking and stuff. The island is very beautiful and worth checking out. In north there are big tour operators that cater for rich tourists, middle is a mix of backpackers and locals when south is more quiet, i heard. I never made it to the south of the island.

Okay, so this was my viewpoint. Giving you a little bit of context, I'll give you my viewpoints on Rio and Sao Paolo.

Rio is just amazing. The most amazing city i have ever seen! Just the natural beauty of the hills is so great and divides the city into nice suburbs. Beaches are great for ppl spotting but not good for surfing. Loads of partying going on! Especially in Lapa on the weekends. Huge street party with tons of people on the streets drinking and blasting music from their cars. You can grab a beer from someone selling it from his trunk/ice box with 3 R$. all the clubs in the area are also full with these hot cariocas swinging their hips! Very nice!

Sao Paolo is much much more boring. It's just a huge huge business city with not much to look at, but.. There's always a but [Image: tongue.gif] The night life (and the restaurants as well) is just crazy. I went to this place where all the strippers come after work and it was a really crazy mix of people. I started to get drunk at the bar since I wasnt happy with the all-men-clientele in the beginning of the night. And behold, after a couple of whisky glasses, the girls started pouring in to the bar and started gaming me when i was alone at the bar!!

This was my two pennies worth!

Florpi is expensive for night life. Some of the clubs make guys pay 100 reais just to get in. And dude, just take buses. You can get beds in the argentina side and upgrade on the brazil side. Its only 14 hours from the falls to florpi.

A good hostel in florpi was Tucano house also...

Yeah, buses ftw. I was really surprised by those comfy big leg spaces.. And there's no need to take the "1st class seat", which is double the price. Normal seat has a decent leg space and leg cushions as well, the only thing missing is the blanket and bag of munchies, but those are not really worth the double price, are they? ;P

These bus experiences are based on brazilian bus companies Itaperim and some other.

In Floripa I'd recommend Lagoa Hostel, located at the heart of Lagoa da Conceicao. That small town is good for night life and a nice base camp for your adventures. Of course, if you want to hit the beach as soon as you wake up (instead of taking the 30min bus ride and having the option of choosing among the many beaches), you should stay at Barra de Lagoa, which is just next to the ocean and a nice beach. Lagoa hostel is nice, clean, safe, quite new and the owner is really chilled and can hook you up with lots of things ^^
