There is also a Robinson's Mall at Fuente Osmena circle where you can meet girls. As others have said, the malls really are key. When you are there, you will see why the malls are so popular... The city is dirty, polluted, poor, etc... but the malls are really nice.

Friendster is important, but I would hop on DateInAsia.com to meet some girls from Cebu before you arrive. Tons of girls from Cebu on there. Ask them for their friendster details so you can see their pics.

Yes, definitely get a pre-paid sim card. $3-$4 for the card, pop it in your phone, then charge it up with a few hundred pesos. 1 peso = 1 text message. Give girls your number and watch your phone start blowing up.

Thanks for all the advice. I actually found out about dateinasia.com from another site a week and a half ago and your right, there are alot of girls from Cebu on there. For a free site the results are impressive I've been camming with some very fine Filipina ladies, I would have a date everynight from that alone without going to the malls. I keep hearing mixed reviews on the safety issue in the phillipines. It would be my first trip to a third world country, but as I work in a jail I think I have decent situational awareness. While the Philippines has a Catholic background due to the Spanish Occupation and they give it a lot of lip service, the Filipinas I've known are pretty sexual. As for chatting these girls on the sites I just tell the truth, I'm heading there for my birthday cause I wanted a cheap vacation with shopping and great beaches and english is spoken widely. I tell them I'm tired of American Women and love the naturalness and femininity of Filipinas. I totally throw out Western rules and give them compliments and do NOT discuss sex with them. The girls online there love foreigners but don't want to be thought of as bar/cam girls or that your after online sex. I stick with ones that lists jobs or higher education on their profiles. Treat them like Princesses and they will start getting sexual with you, and once they open up... look out. All the girls I've been talking too eventually get naughty when you don't bring it up.

I'm no expert, but I've been there several times and I personally think alot of the "safety" issues are hyped up. There are definitely some issues in remote areas of Mindanao, but you won't be anywhere close to that. For a developing country, I think it is a relatively safe place to visit and as added bonuses they are friendly, speak english and like Americans. (Canadians, Europeans, Aussies, etc... all are "American" to them)

Crooked taxis are an issue in Manila and to a lesser extent Cebu... but just insist on them using the meter and if they don't want to, hop out and grab another cab. I would prefer to flag down a moving taxi instead of one sitting around waiting for tourists to rip off (same with trikes). Also, it is very common for the driver to say they don't have any change, so make sure you have some 50s and 20s on you at all times. As a rough guide, a trip across Cebu City shouldn't cost more than P150-P200.

Pick pockets are an issue especially in busy areas and on Jeepneys. I've never had a problem, but I've probably just been lucky.

This is a good point... That can totally happen. It is common for a girl cousin or friend to show up with the girl on the first date/meeting... but in my experience once they figure out you aren't a total creep (assuming you aren't), the other person will leave (of course not before YOU pay for the meal... haha). But you have a good chance at the girl showing up alone too.

As for them assuming you are there for sex, I don't think it's much of an issue. They would probably assume that you are meeting other girls, but if anything I think this just pulls in the competition factor. I'm not saying they will sleep with you on the first date or whatever, but I think most of these girls live in the real world and know what guys want.

The UPI is extremely dangerous. You aren't going to get beat up and robbed but there are a ton of other things that could mess you up.

Cebu is about a 1700 square mile island, roughly half the size as The Big Island here in Hawaii where 150,000 people live. Cebu has 3.5 million people. I couldn't image that many people living in Hilo!

The island just can't handle the population. That's the problem all over the UPI. There are huge sewage puddles everywhere. Underground pipes are just busting open and spraying shit. On Boracay, the nice blue water you see in pictures of the beaches is actually caused by some screwball algae. The bottom floor of the Mall Of Asia had wood pallets in some of the stores to walk on because of sewage backup. The whole place stank.

On top of that people, and lots of them, have bizarre illnesses. My friend and I were sitting at a bar in Boracay talking up some local looking girls. One of them had a bandage in the area where the "tramp stamp" is usually located. We asked if she'd just gotten tattooed. She said no "I had a mersa" I didn't know what that meant so when I found some uncensored and functioning internet access I googled it. It meant MRSA which is a nasty huge zit from a staph infection. I thought about it, and you can't believe how many people I saw with huge zits on the backs of their necks and knees, and inside their elbows. A cab driver had a rash allover his arm, my friend asked about that. The man had the motherfucking measles.

You also need to stay off the Jeepneys. Those are stupid. There was a burned out one sitting on Ayala Ave in front of a bar I was at. It's engine had caught fire, and folks on the street dipped buckets into a sewage puddle to throw on it. The water in the puddle actually had some flammable shit in it and all the people inside just got charred to death. They just left it sitting there. Disgusting.

It's just not a good place to travel.

I've never noticed all the illnesses you mentioned, but I guess I'm not surprised. There are so many poor people there with shitty or non-existent medical care.

There are definitely alot of areas that leave much to be desired... it is a country that is dirty, run-down, over-populated, smelly at times, etc. Some people just hate it. Understandable. I have enjoyed my visits there. Although in fairness I probably wouldn't recommend it to my Mom as a tourist destination. But for the semi-adventurous traveler, I think it is a cool place to visit... especially if you don't have alot of money. Besides the plane ticket, it is a cheap place to be and that is a big part of the appeal for me.

I don't ride jeepneys often, but being burned alive has never been one of my concerns. Maybe it should be... but I would think if one caught fire, people would just hop out the back...? Weird. I would be more worried about pickpockets than dying in a jeepney inferno.

Have you been to Thailand, Kona? If so (I haven't), I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the place.

For the local music scene go to the Malate District
