edX Microdegree in Artificial Intelligence by Columbia University

https://www.edx.org/micromasters/columbi...telligence

This is just up on edX starting from January 2017. Courses (300$ per course):

Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Learn the fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and apply them.

Machine Learning
Master the essentials of machine learning and algorithms to help improve learning from data without human intervention.

Animation and CGI Motion
Learn the science behind movie animation from the Director of Columbia’s Computer Graphics Group.

Robotics
Learn the core techniques for representing robots that perform physical tasks in the real world.

The difference between this course and other similar courser on Coursera or edX is that you can earn graduate credit towards Columbia degree:

If a student applies to the Master of Computer Science program at Columbia and is accepted, the MicroMasters Credential will count toward 25% of the coursework required for graduation in the on campus program.

The question as always will be : how well is this going to be received by employers?

A micro degree won't have much impact if no one is willing to accept it.

I got a shitload of these online certificates, mostly free, from reputable universities. I think they can make a difference on your resume and it helps you show your dedication to a certain topic when applying for a job, but all depends on your field of work.

Nevertheless, I feel these days you can get a better education online for free than in the average university in Western World. The only problem for an 18 yo would be that you have no ´official´ bachelor/masters degree then.

Depends on employer. This is not a substitute for a degree, but this does signal familiarity with content and willingness to learn to an employer.

I posted this, because this was the first set of courses I saw on these platforms that would count as a graduate credit.

For Masters in Computer Science at Columbia you need to complete 30 points at the price of $1,782. Courses above count for 25% of coursework required (7.5 points), so you save $12,165 by doing these online instead of on campus if you pursue Ms in Computer Science.

I will be attempting this program. If anyone else wants to join me and create a study group that would be great. There are already two of us.

Although I'm already in school for computer-science, I take roughly 20-30 MOOCs a year. Always looking to connect and collaborate with other computer-science and programming students. Please reach out. Maybe if there is enough interest a bunch of highly motivated guys can create a self-study group for mutual benefit.

This is more a way for Columbia to lock in students with the means to pay than a useful degree in and of itself.

You'd need additional programming or data science knowledge to put this to use. (or...a full degree)
