U of Iowa legitimizes SJW's, offers a degree in "social justice"

Iowa I am disappoint. Buckle up bros, the liberal education complex is gearing up for a Hillary administration. I read this on another forum and thought it was thread worthy only to find out it was approved yesterday by the university. Im sure this degree will be in such demand that universities will rush to adopt it.

Quote:Quote:

The University of Iowa is looking to add a new bachelor’s program in social justice.

If approved by the Iowa Board of Regents during Thursday's meeting in Iowa City, the program would be the first undergraduate degree explicitly focused on social justice or human rights in any Iowa college or university.

"The proposed program will appeal to students who want a vocation related to helping others, or careers in government services or the nonprofit sector, but are not necessarily interested in teaching or social work," the proposal states.

Over the past decade, there has been an increase in students who work as volunteers, activists and advocates and who are interested in careers with nonprofits and in government, UI officials said Wednesday during a meeting of the regents' Academic and Student Affairs Committee in Iowa City.

Student demand for the program, said UI Provost Barry Butler, can be seen in the full enrollment in the university's Justice For All living learning community as well as in the positive reaction to a recent first-year seminar on social justice.

Many of these students have found homes in the traditional majors at UI, according to the proposal. A growing number of students, however, “have expressed a desire to integrate academic work more deeply with anticipated career paths.”

Those career options include working in nonprofits, advocacy groups, public health, education and social services.

The new program would be housed in UI’s Department of Gender, Women’s and Sexuality Studies, which has a history of "creating opportunities for real-world experience tied to classroom experience," according to the proposal.

Although there no other specific social justice programs in the state, Iowa universities and colleges do offer some programs with similar goals.

Iowa State University, for example, offers program in Global Resource Systems as well as a program in Child, Adult and Family Services; Grinnell College has a program in Global Development Studies; and the University of Northern Iowa has a program in Family Services and other in Gerontology that explores some of the same themes.

Enrollment is expected to be 25 students during year one of the new program, increasing to 110 students by year seven.

Because of its interdisciplinary nature, the program is not expected to require any new costs during years one and two. Plans are to add a part-time lecturer in year three, depending on the need.

Justice for all living community. What in the fuck is that? Are they going to expose farm kids to the evils of white privilege and the patriarchy?

Work a project with Habitat for Humanity
Form a Dance Marathon team
Volunteer at homeless shelter/food pantry
Support and participate in the “Boxes and Walls” diversity program on campus
Attend open houses of the Cultural Centers at Iowa

The Social Justice Industry Complex is a much realer thing nowadays.

They're being given accreditation, degrees, workshops, awards.

Granted to the real world it's laughable.

Honestly I'm not surprised. Academia was where this cancer began and that is where it is entrenched especially deeply.

If only you knew how bad things really are.

So will you get a good paying job as a barista when you graduate?

Think of the career possibilities...

I'll let Chomsky break down why the current libarts curriculum at universities is so awful:

You have the students and faculty in the department of Gender and Women's Whatever who want the rest of society to take them as seriously as they do the Physics department.

The proposal blatantly contradicts itself saying people interested in the program are people who want to "help others" bu don't want to be educators or work in social services - then goes on to say the students that would enroll in this program could go on to be educators or work in social services. Makes sense to me guys.

Basically saying they are offering the course study because it's profitable and trendy, and the people who would enroll in the program don't actually want to do anything useful like teach or work in social services.

It will just be another useless humanities degree that will pad some kid's resume when they apply for an HR position.

Meh, only way this bothers me is that they start forgiving student debt. Otherwise just idiots wasting their future.

As a former resident of the state, I am not surprised that they are doing it. It is a complete socialist mecca for anyone in the region. What I am surprised is that they are that much ahead of the curve. This is the first time that I have ever heard this. Surely it has been done in such "enlightened" corners of our great nation as California or Mass.

Concerning the kind of kids who go there, the majority of the kids who go there are suburb kids from Chicago, Des Moines, or St. Louis, so the farm kids are far and few between, and even so they are the ones who are fleeing the farm life. I am sure that they will get quite a following as Iowa City is a ripe environment for this. ISU has the College of Agriculture, so the farm kids who are staying farm kids are going there.

Idiots Out Walking Around

These social justice warriors even took over the Iowa Pig Calling Championships:

They are shooting themselves in the foot, or " feets"as they say in Iowa. All the kids that get that degree are gonna do is try to get into law or medical school. When they don't get in they are gonna sue for discrimination.

Some of the most extreme left-leaning universities are where you least expect them: in the rural midwest or as mini-oases of SJWery within conservative/traditional environments. Think Duke University or U of T at Austin (conservative states). Think Lena Dunham. It's as if the misfits band together in places like these even more strongly. Also, the academic job market is so bad that second-tier faculty have to take a position wherever they can get it, even if that means leaving blue areas and relocating to the boonies. And they export their values once they get there, building lefty meccas in unlikely places.

I'm sure it's been mentioned on the forum, but Breaking Away is a great town vs. gown drama from the 70s (Indiana U).

...snip..

Actually, several universities offered "Social Welfare & Justice" degree programs. What is even worse, liberals and lefties are already forcing "Social Justice Indoctrination" on every college student through diversity programs as part of orientation or training.

So Marquette University (1/4th the size of U of I) has a social justice degree program as well. On top of that you can get to graduate school on it to half of a dozen schools in the Midwest.

Not that I am looking for it, but are there others? I was expecting full social justice degrees at places like UC Berkley, Ohio State, any Ivy League, etc.

That's not exactly new, but is getting worse every year I will grant you that.

It is a little different to take a class or two on social justice as opposed to get a degree in it. I would cede to the point that in general most sociology degrees, and "insert non white male description" studies degrees are de-facto social justice degrees, and have been for decades. The difference with a social justice degree is that they are not hiding behind something that seems credible to those who don't know better or don't care.

Did not know that about Iowa, sad to hear. Under a Trump administration these graduates would be asking "Will that be a grande or a venti?". Under Hillary they will be be the foot soldiers for NGOs and Super-PACs like "A Diverse American Century" and "The Social Justice League", the red guards of our day. I pray it is the former.

Totally agree with you here. Any major university these days are infected by these cancerous interlopers. Some are worse than others. From personal experience, UNC-CH has the same left leaning tendencies and useful idiot training as Duke.

Let's not forget the useless Women & Gender Studies degrees. Speaking of Gender Studies, did anyone hear about a purple haired Saddleback College's Professor who tore down 9/11 Memorial posters just recently?

I dunno, it's just universities offering more soft degrees to make a quick buck. At least employers will know not to employ these idiots. I had a decent CV hit my desk, all looked good, then they'd listed 'Hobbies and interests - Gender Equality'.

I don't know why she didn't just address it to 'The Bin' to save time...

A. When Mizzou was begging for more money, their budget showed that student debt forgiveness was higher than their shortfall. They were begging for money to forgive the debt of these morons.

B. Hillary wants to make college free. This is a great way to force taxpayers to train activists to steal more of their money. It's cultural and economic suicide.
