A lot of misinformation about pick-up in this thread. Go watch either season of The Pick-Up Artist and you'll quickly realize that aside from Mystery wearing some outrageous outfits, absolutely no one was advocating that guys actually dress like that. In fact, the make over episodes of the show were very effective at turning lame looking guys into men with a decent level of style.
I've associated with PUA style club clowns and guys who run styles of game that this forum approves of and there isn't much difference, except that the PUA types consistently approach.
The guys who I've seen get the best pussy have always been heavily Mystery influenced players.
There are pictures floating about of Mystery hanging with Strauss and some of the guys named in The Game circa 2005. Mystery is wearing his typical goth magician clothes. Which works for him as he is a goth magician. The other guys, including Strauss, look absolutely retarded.
I'd agree. The level of the retarded look varies, but it's safe to say that while Mystery was able to pull off his look, other guys trying to follow his example early on may have failed to achieve a cohesive appearance.

Strauss and some of the other affiliated guys did advocate "peacocking." Which may have been misunderstood and exaggerated, but not by much. Mystery and other PUAs may have done things differently, and I have no doubts that they did well, but Strauss himself advocated some really weird things. On his Annihilation video series I remember him telling guys to wear around town an empty shoulder holster. That's not peacocking, that's retarded.
A lot of the retarded stuff you saw early in the PUA community was the result of guys close to Mystery (and pretty much anyone else who wanted to) trying to build a lifestyle of freedom by teaching game for a living.
Their focus was less on results with women, and more about results in pulling in students, filling classes, and making money.
The e-books and $2000 DVD sets were even worse, with guys (including Style) who had innovated nothing new tried to distinguish themselves while simple rehashing Mystery's material.
That doesn't change the fact that Mystery's written material was very strong and continues to be an asset to this day for men who have studied it. It's helped me a lot.
If you do watch The Pick-Up Artist, you'll see that Mystery has hardly advocating the silliness that others were. He appears adept at turning completely awkward guys into men who can get laid, no empty shoulder holsters required.
