A little difficult question to place, but here goes:

I just started a penicillin regimen for an infected abcess at my jawline (ugly as shit, luckily my beard is sufficiently thick to cover most of it). How can I mitigate eventual side effects of the penicillin? Eat loads of yoghurt and probiotics? Anything else?

Everyone has to take antibiotics at some point, I wouldn't worry too much about this. Fermented foods as a whole should be in everyone's diet but especially someone trying to recolonize their gut. This means yogurt (ideally make your own), kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, and kombucha. You can take probiotics but I'd focus more on food. VSL#3 and PB5 are good probiotics. Lastly, resistant starch has some beneficial effects on gut bacteria. To give a quick breakdown RS avoids digestion in your small intestine and is digested in your bacteria-rich large intestine. This helps boost bacterial populations. It gets a bit complicated but here's a good article

Love all the people saying garlic & ginger here!
Blueberries are indeed great for the brain. (Help prevents Alzheimer's disease or dementia down the road.)
I buy them frozen and make fruit smoothies with them often.
Walnuts and Dark chocolate are also great for the brain.

Here are some of lesser known superstars you guys should consider:

Hawthorn: Whole cardiovascular system improvement herb. It has properties that help protect against the formation of plaque. Seeing as the leading cease of deaths is from cardiovascular disease in the US. This herb is an excellent investment.

Beets/Beetroot: It's fantastic for your cardiovascular system. A real reduction in blood pressure is just one benefit.

Schizandra Fruit: Good for the brain. Its star power comes from it being one of best herbs for supporting the Liver.

Astragalus Root: Boost the immune system. Kidney function booster.

All four either supports your blood or helps the organs that clean it. Am a big believer in looking after your blood.

I'm a big garlic guy especially for colds, and know it's an antibiotic, but why so sure and firm on this one?
