If the rock comes out say an inch from the wall, and the strips are sitting on top an inch below the ceiling pressed against the wall, I dont think you would? The corner of the stone should conceal them. I guess I would have to expirament after its built.

Who would you say has quality contemporary furniture, regardless of price? Just hoping to fine-tune my tastes.

Interesting. I'm not an electician, and the place dosn't have a soffit, so I will use the hidden light technique you described.

You seem to have experience with this type of stuff. How do you think it would look if I had the stone wall stop at about an inch from the ceiling, and then put an LED strip on top of the rocks close to the wall? Would be a dim light, but I could also use color if I did that. Thoughts?

Really a bunch of ways to accomplish what you want

You could do some type of valance to hide the light :[Image: lighting-valance.jpg]

LED or rope light would work as well.

Rope lights are cheap, flexible and you just plug them in Here's just one way to use them for dramatic effect:

What do you think of this indoor waterfall, which is only 4.5 inches thick and can be flush mounted in a wall.

The idea is cool. Is that a showroom pic? Terrible implementation.

Maybe if the rest of your place looks rich, it'd make a good statement piece.

Otherwise, if you walk past that to see bunk beds, IKEA starter furniture, and a CRT TV...

I'd like this for a modern townhome in one of the desert cities.

Thinking of doing a kitchen remodel similar to this, though with different flooring.

Not sure about the blue backsplash though, thoughts?

I've got a real comfortable sofa but it's very old, the color is totally off.

What would you suggest throwing on it or covering it with? A common sofa sheet? If so, what color?

I also like the faux-fur polyester sheet that youngsters love to wrap themselves in. Screams snuggle to me.

Woulda love to but hard to get and would cost more than the sofa itself. When I own my apartment then I'll spend serious $ on that, right now still renting. Hence why I'm covering an old sofa instead of just buying a new one.

Doesnt make sense to me to spend $ on expensive furniture when renting, especially since bitches are superficial as fuck and can't tell quality from cheap amazon stuff.

Saw some listings the other day. I'm curious, which of these amenities do you guys think makes an impression?

- Valet parking.
- Fireplace.
- Separate walk-in shower.
- Open loft floorplan.
- Doorman.

Impression - open loft floor plan, looks larger than it is.

Pick the one that makes you happy.

If your happiness doesn't make an impression, have your doorman toss her out.

It is extremely nice to be able to enjoy the sun at breakfast, midday, and in the evening. The ideal batchelor pad in my view has garden space/balconies that allow you to enjoy your breakfast in the morning sunshine, catch a few of those all important midday rays at lunch time, and then enjoy a cold drink and an olive or two in the gentler heat and light of the evening.

More generally, I like big windows, and a space with a lot of natural light.

This is a hypothetical "all other things being equal" scenario, of course.

Personally, as long as access control is in place (doorman or otherwise) and the weather is reliably warm, I vote for party shower, open loft, and car slave.

Thanks Papaya.

This is kind of the scheme I was imagining, though I think I would pick a more prominent wall:

[Image: modern-dining-room-with-stone-accent-wall-730x410.jpg]

This is called "soft contemporary" style and likely a faux stone veneer...it's a good look too and the installation is practically identical so it should be cost effective.

I'm thinking about doing something like that but with a brick veneer, to give my pad the exposed brick look. It comes in tiles that are 10" by 28". About $8/sft for materials. Not cheap, but if done right can bring multiples of that in market value/resale.

Also, you can install a modern fireplace. These things can be bought for under $500. They are fairly shallow, and of course are artificial. And you'll need some carpentry skills to install it inside a wall.
