Navy Women to Get More Stylish Uniforms

As one can imagine, when you add women into a military, they become intently focused on killing the enemy and bonding with their fellow mates, or....not. It seems US Navy chicks are more interested in looking "good" than actually being effective. File under 1000 and 1 reasons as to why women don't belong in the military, period.

For women chiefs and officers who have complained their khaki pants were outdated and unflattering, your voice has been heard.

The Navy is in the midst of redesigning those much loathed slacks, and is loosening some uniform regulations in the meantime to accommodate women who can't stand them.

As of Aug. 4, women are allowed to wear the men's khakis, if they find them more comfortable. They're also able to wear the khaki overblouse without a belt, for the first time, with either the men's or women's slacks, according to NAVADMIN 174/16, a uniform update that also announced the dumping of the Navy working uniform.

"The intent of this policy change is to provide an option for female officers and CPOs to address some of the fit concerns expressed with the current female Service Khaki slacks," according to the NAVADMIN. In addition making better fitting slacks,, officials are working on a pencil skirt.

A year ago, uniform officials were toying with the idea of a side zipper or other updates to the pants' details, but those features have since been abandoned in the redesign, according to a chief of naval personnel spokeswoman.

"There are currently no planned design detail changes to khaki slacks for female chiefs and officers," Sharon Anderson told Navy Times in a statement. "However, we are awaiting the results of the fit evaluation feedback before making a final determination. Our primary focus is to improve the patterns for a better fit."

The U.S. military is dumping the dumbest uniform ever

In 2014, women wear-tested new khaki slacks. One version had a side zipper that had a more flattering fit, officials said.

The rules formalize some workarounds that women in the fleet are already doing, according to a female O-5 who spoke to Navy Times. Women have been wearing the men's pants with the overblouse or going belt-less under the overblouse, she said.

"The regs say that if your pants have belt loops then you are required to wear a belt," said the officer, who asked for anonymity to discuss uniform rule violations. "I know not many people know this and I know a lot of women that forgo the belt because they make the shirt stick out, but those are the regs."

Still, she added, it might not make a difference for those like herself, who don't wear the overblouse because it's a different color than the khaki slacks. The overblouse was originally designed for the junior enlisted uniform, to be worn with black pants, and as such is manufactured by a different company and is a slightly different shade of tan.

One style faux pas to avoid: Women can't wear their regular button-downs tucked into the men's pants. That would screw up the gig-line — traditionally, women's buttons and zippers are on the right side of their garment, while men's are on the left.

Wearing men's khakis would do away with the dreaded hip pleats, but as the female O-5 pointed out, still wouldn't fit quite right in the hips for a lot of women.

"But for some women that might be better," she added. "I think I wore a set during a ship's skit night or something and I remember them being even higher-waisted than the ones I had."

The Navy has been revamping its more formal uniforms over the past few years, fielding unisex versions based on traditionally male designs, at the urging of Navy Secretary Ray Mabus.

The changes have been met with some outrage from some men and many women — chiefs and officers will have to pay for new sets of uniforms, unlike enlisted who receive uniform stipends.

"I guess it's nice to put the option out there but I am not sure, based on the push back of the male cover, how many women would want to wear the male pants — plus they button and zip the opposite direction," the officer said.

New pants are on the horizon, according to the NAVADMIN. Wear-testing is set to begin as soon as October, with a goal to have the design approved and rolled out in fiscal year 2018.

"We are incorporating data from our recent anthropomorphic sizing correlation study into the pattern development to take advantage of the newest information available on Navy body shapes and sizing," Anderson said.

According to the officer, women are hoping for a more modern fit and more accurate sizing.

"I wear a six normally," she said, "but in the Navy I am a 14 or 16."

Reason no.69 why the women do not belong anywhere near the military, except in the arms and beds of our soldiers.

Im torn on this one. Uniform wise it's the best of times, and it's the worst of times.

US Navy uniform rollouts have been a fucking disaster. I sometimes think we're guinea pigs and captive customers for the uniform manufacturer complex. There have been 3 complete uniform seabag changes in the past 15 years. We've gone from looking like convicts, to mechanics, to mutant Coast Guardsmen. The NWU Type I is a great uniform that's very functional and professional looking. Just don't fight a fire in it or it will melt to your skin. Don't fall overboard in it or you'll be lost at sea. For heaven's sake don't do any work in it or you'll get heat stroke because it doesn't breath. Now come Oct 1 were all going to switch to brown/green digital NWU Type III. Are they spinning a wheel of misfortune at the uniform office or what?

Its a waste of time and money from an end user standpoint because the uniform allowances never cover everything, plus you have to send your garments to get tailored and have patches sewn on. They do uniform rollouts by region normally, so imagine tens of thousands of people all trying to buy the same things and take them to the same places. There is a reason someone who knows how to run a sewing machine on a ship can easily make $250/mo+ during promotion time.

From a policy standpoint, it is another trickle down effect of the gender olympics being forced upon our military. Gender neutral uniforms seem like a good idea logistically, but until men and women reach test/est parity (we're getting there, sadly) it is a wholly misguided endeavor and this is born out in the real world aka "the deckplates". Task Force Uniform is just another cushy DC billet for senior people to network into contracting gigs after retirement.

The patented 5 step process goes something like this:

1. Identify which uniforms suck
2. Wear test several different types
3. Request feedback from the Fleet
4. Ignore feedback from the Fleet
5. Roll out a uniform that sucks

Wait 3-5 years for uniforms to reach total market penetration and the uniform houses to make their money and start the circle of suck over again.

On the other hand, well fitting uniforms are important. As someone who has to see the effects of these decisions everyday on Sailors that I lead there is a correlation between a better fitting uniform and a more professional appearance. Just like someone in an OTR suit from Target will look and very likely feel horrible compared to someone in a tailored MTM suit, so to do Sailors. Females are a pain in the ass but are here to stay unfortunately. The female uniforms are simply horrible. You can take a shit hot yoga HB9 and make her look like a Ms. Potatohead looking sack of shit with a billowing, baggy pair of khakis or cammies. That is not conducive to being an ambassador to the service or presenting a hard target to the enemy.

I tell my guys (and gals) something: When you look good, you feel good. When you feel good, you work good.

4 years until retirement. Fuck.

And I thought women wanted to be soldiers because they wanted to prove themselves to be just as capable.
