For me, things don't reach the level of "uncomfortable" until the middle-end of November. To be honest, this cold thing about Montreal is over-exaggerated. Everything is heated here and it's a city where millions have been living for a long period of time.

Completely agree. Montreal is no walk in the part but it not as that difficult either. I would say it is one of the easier cities.

I can't speak about all Montrealers but I know in Saguenay and Quebec city if you are arab or indian looking you need to have a very good understanding of quebecois culture and have a pretty good french quebecois accent.
