Reading Out Loud

Hello guys,

I stumbled upon this article which advocates reading aloud since it helps remember things better, improves vocabulary and many other things.

https://blogs.voices.com/voxdaily/2008/1..._life.html

I could not find a thread related to this so I am asking you: Does anyone of you guys read aloud? If yes what are some of the benefits you have noticed?

- Do you find that it helps you remember things better?

- Better voice?

- Improves your accent?

I have done it for a week and I like it but I can't see any difference, it's probably too soon.

Interesting idea. Having done it for my son it's amazing when you start how you think it's simple but it's actually harder than it seems, even with children's books.

You have to be able to scan the entire sentence before you start it because if you accidentally structure the flow incorrectly then several words later you sound like an idiot.

It's probably the reason that politicians who use teleprompters have speech patterns that become absolute clichés. It's not just about brand building but the simple fact that you can't enunciate random sentences a few words at a time without sounding like an idiot unless you have an agreed upon sentence structure coupled with standardised system of timing and a generic phrase library.

The public will judge a man by what he lifts, but those close to him will judge him by what he carries.

Reading aloud to other people can have some great benefits such as improve your public speaking ability. I'd agree with all of those points except for the reading comprehension one. If I'm reading aloud it is more for the person/people listening and comprehension goes out the window. For fiction it's not too bad but if it's a non-fiction book I find I have to re-read all the parts that I read aloud.

This would not work for someone like me. Although I actually talk pretty fast, my talking speed is maybe a third or even a quarter of my reading speed. I'd grow too impatient and would lose concentration.

I always read stuff written in Russian out loud, it keeps my ears tuned up and my tongue limber.
