Bodyfat Formula

This formula is simple and reliable because waist size is so relevant. Other measures involving skinfold thickness or electrical conductivity can give misleading results, but a huge guy with a small waist is almost certainly lean.

For men: Bodyfat = -98.42 + 4.15*waist - .082*bodyweight,
For women: Bodyfat = -76.76 + 4.15*waist - .082*bodyweight,

where "waist" is your waist measurement in inches, and "bodyweight" is your total body weight in pounds. Divide your bodyfat by your bodyweight to get your bodyfat percentage.

Ideally when training, your weight should increase while your waist shrinks (An increase in lean body mass is GOOD).

For men < 15% is considered athletic, 25 being about average.
For women < 22% is considered athletic, 30 being about average.

Equations like these are always inferior to a properly conducted skinfolds exam. People deposit fat differently, and that's why it's necessary to measure multiple points.

The equation seems way too sensitive to increases in waist circumference. A 1" and 5 lb increase yielded a 4% point increase in body fat.

Here's the US Military's equation: % body fat = 86.010 x log10(abdomen - neck) - 70.041 x log10(height) + 36.76. Although it's not very accurate either.

Too much geeky math there fellas! [Image: wink.gif]

Here's a better way to get a bodyfat measurement. Take off your shirt on a hot, sunny day, and walk to your local supermarket. Get a lot of girls staring at you and smiling? Your BF is good! Are they ignoring and laughing at you? Get your ass on a strict veggie, fruits and protein diet PRONTO!!

Am at 19% trying to get it below 15%.

it's mainly in the died and I have decided to cut most (if I can) of saturated fats and just keep on the unsaturated ones. (i.e. nuts (almonds and peanuts), fish/omega3, brown multigrain bread). while increasing vegies and lean meats and poultry.

your take?

What have you been eating until now that has made you and kept you fat? A diet is worthless if you can't keep it, so don't go all out just yet.

What's making you fat is sugar, starches, and highly processed carbohydrates, too many calories, or both. Avoid both, and eat whole filling foods. Meat, nuts, poultry, vegetables, fruit and dairy. A slice of bread here and there. I wouldn't worry about saturated fats.

well Saturated fats cause plaque and arthecelorosis and heart attacks. but thanks for the tip. I m upping my gym routine and want to bulk up.

Maybe I forgot to mention, I'm slightly over 6f2 barefoot and weigh 183 pounds.

Saturate fat does not cause arthecelorosis. There has never been a decent study that has conclusively determined that. The original test by Ancel Keys innvolved 22 countries but he threw out at least half of the results so that he got a correlation. Check out the fathead videos on youtube. Its a good movie too I think it might be on hulu. Also if your your cholesterol level falls to low, your at a high risk for stroke. So low cholesterol doesn't prevent mortality by CHD.

Gonna try the 'juicer diet' on your advice, Mixx....starting after the long weekend.

A little worried about muscle depletion...should I be? I will be continuing with my weight training and cardio while on the diet.

Why not throw some egg whites in that bitch then? There is high return on protein for egg whites so you can swallow lots of it and you'll pack on the protein (thus sustaining and gaining on your lean muscle mass). Go easy on the yolk (thus my emphasis on egg whites).

Good point. Egg whites would probably mix better than protein powder.

Still, I wonder how much of the weight loss on the juicer diet is muscle depletion.

Don't forget that Spinach (uncooked) has about 7 grams of pure protein per cup.

So, supplant your juices with legumes, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds and you will be fine.

I get my protein from legumes and lentils. I don't 100% juice as I am already in great physical shape. I cook some legumes abd eat a handful of almond nuts, and seeds daily.

Definitely throw some egg whites in the juicer!!

Thanks dude. I'll do as prescribed. I expect the first couple weeks will be pretty interesting.

My main goal is to trim down this month.

Cooked egg whites are more bioavailable than raw egg whites. They store longer and don't have salmonella.

Yea, I heard about that, so I guess he could throw them on the frying pan for a little bit if must before throwing them in the mixer.

But still, a 16 gram return on a total 20 gram availability of egg whites is better than none, eh padre?

I would just boil a bunch once per week. Then he can throw away the yolks if desired and pack them easily.

"Cooked egg whites are more bioavailable than raw egg whites. They store longer and don't have salmonella."

exactly. they are more easily absorbed by the body when cooked.. you don't have to worry about salmonella if you get Eggwhites in pasteurized packs (they come in like like little milk cartons)

Fat head is a very good documentary. However, your body will get very little nutrion from burgers. I don't see how eating 1800 calories of fast-food a day is healthy, if the guy takes off his shirt, he has VERY LITTLE muscle tone abd looks flabby - not the physique women beg for.

So yeah, he lost dead weight, but I'm almost certain it was 80% water and muscle, not abnormal fat under your skin.

I'm certain that I can do a documentary where all I eat is fruits and veggies and gain weight. If I eat 5,0000 calories of green veggies, apples, strawberries and nuts a day.

I don't recommend anybody do what the guy in Fathead did. You need a balanced diet of a base of veggies and fruit with the occasional treat thrown in to let your body know it's all good.

I think the guy from fathead just did it to make a point. I believe he is low carb or paleo most of the time. You don't lose muscle that quickly on high protein if at all. although you need some carbs for intense workouts, for me starches work best due to digestive issues. But if I was really sick and couldn't work out I would keep my carbs low to maintain muscle mass. Fat helps too with testosterone and maintaining mental health.
