Losing weight is SUPER HARD for me

Have you tried Coconut Oil/MCT oil?

This is what it's done for me:
1) drastically reduced afternoon snacking - I take it mixed in a cup of coffee after lunch - I think it may have been key for me going down one notch on my belt.
2) probably saved my career by preventing mental fatigue/foggy head. I still eventually burn out but it takes 11 months now instead of a few weeks.
3) much better sleep. I used to get up at 3AM thinking it was because I needed to urinate. Now I regularly sleep straight to between 5:30 AM and 7:30 AM depending on the day.

At least in the States coconut oil is dirt cheap and MCT oil is affordable. If it doesn't work for you, use the rest for cooking and never buy it again.

Tea or coffee with no sugar (only zero calorie sweeteners if any, no milk or creme) are great for appetite surpressant. Also, chew gum. Burns calories and alao helps you from getting hungry.

Breakfast: 100 g oatmeal, 1 spoon marmalade, 1 apple

Lunch: some meat (like a chicken thigh or a small steak), 200/300 g potatoes w/ some olive oil on them

Dinner: big salad w/ lettuce and 2/3 spoons olive oil, 1/2 apples

I might exchange fish for meat and oranges for apples, but the portions stay the same

Well there's your problem. You're on a high-carbohydrate, high-sugar diet.

oatmeal, potatoes - carbohydrate
marmalade, apples, oranges - sugar

The link I posted earlier lists exactly what you should be eating and avoiding: http://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb

Also, try drinking a lot of water and black coffee (can be decaf) instead of having breakfast while having the aim of a late lunch (1 PM or later). I've used it as a way to intermittently fast in a manner that's pretty comfortable. You can gradually try to increase when you break the fast over time.

Brain fog on low carb is a salt deficiency.

Muscle cramps - potassium
Digestion issues - magnesium
Thirst - oddly, salt related.

Carbs aside from quick energy, also help you stay hydrated and retain electrolytes.

How serious are you trying to lose weight? Try an ect stack or l-tyrosine, ephedrine (find at walgreens as bronkaid) and caffeine. Gurentee you won't get hungry. Still having issues (very rare) try clen or clenbuteral. You won't want to eat period. From personal experience clen may be too much w/o proper research. The diet advice is spot on. Stay on a low or no carb diet and COUNT calories. Eat 10X your body weight of calories daily. Or try some form of IF fasting weather it be adf (alternate day fasting) or leangains style (fast everyday for 16+ hours). It really comes down to how bad do you want it.

Another thing I have noticed if I have a pint of green juice in the morning I often don't get that hungry later in the day and reduces any cravings for rubbish or carbs.

All about meeting the macros my friend. Calculate your macros for weight loss, hit the gym and log your food intake... a low carb diet is not as great as many people lead you to think. Cutting all sugar out is a great idea while adding in loads of vegetables.

You need to eat fat to lose fat. Cut the carbs and go with high quality fats.

Definitely, there has been some fantastic advice given in this thread on nutrition and lifestyle habits.
However, because of your age and genetic predisposition to being a fatty - if none of the aforementioned advice helps.
Then I would suggest you go get your Thyroid checked and if it is low or even low-normal, goto an anti-aging clinic & get on T3 for life.

I consider myself the posterboy for Willpower, Discipline and Grit to build masculine character.
Having said all that - I'm only 31 years old and at a certain age, I will be the first in line for TRT & T3 replacement.
Living optimized and always at your peak, regardless of age, is a real possibility with modern medicine.
There is no excuse to feel like an 80 year old man in your 40's when you could be feeling 21 again.

I've had decent-sized love handles for most of my life, despite not eating a lot.

Two years ago, I decided that I wanted to get more athletic, so I went all in.

I had about 1800 cal/day, and hit the gym 5 days a week, lifting 3 times out of the 5, running 2 times out of 5.

I did it for 18 months. I had pangs of hunger for 6 months, and after that, I did not feel hunger anymore, but my brain was foggy most of the time. At the end, I could run for one hour, and lift myself hanging from a bar 50 or 60 times. I could not lift much though. I think I was bench pressing 50 kilos or something like that.

I developed an extreme physical resistence (I moved my whole apartment alone, including furniture etc), but I just could not think straight.

I lost 10 kilos, but it was uphill the whole time. As soon as I ate more than 1800 cal/day, I would start to gain weight again.

When I tried to become more athletic and ate more than say 2000 cal/day, my weight would absolutely not budge, either way.

So I can either lose weight and go around with my brain in a haze, or exercise to death, eat normally and not lose a gram.

This happened at the age of 44, but I had this pattern all my life.

What am I doing wrong?

You ate too little. You exercised too much. You also probably ate too often, and you probably chose your macros poorly.

This is an excellent book--I suggest reading it:

As a guy who lost literally a hundred pounds, there are two things I always tell people who are struggling to lose weight.

1.) Get tested for Sleep Apnea. Fat people are particularly prone to this, though I'm not sure whether it's a cause or an effect. This makes it a lot harder to lose weight, and it will straight up kill you if you don't take care of it. Insurance will cover the tests.

2.) Get tested for a thyroid issues. Thyroid problems make it really hard to lose weight and some of the symptoms sound similar to what you're describing. The test is dirt cheap and the problems are easily fixable with cheap medicine.

You have no excuse not to do these two things.

I was in a similar boat as you. My genetics on both sides of my family are geared towards obesity (confirmed with a genetic test on my dad's side). Though you didn't have success with the keto, please try it again. The previous posters gave you good advice, so no need for me to repeat.

The one item I did that is making my keto weight loss pretty painless for my middle aged body was supplements.

The one that had a real positive effect was Pantethine (a form of B-5). I originally took it to help improve my cholesterol numbers (it worked!). Turns out it had an awesome side effect: Prior to taking it, I was struggling and failing to get through an exercise plateau. My body felt like it was shutting down after losing just 5 lbs (I was using an exercise bike). Two days on pantethine and I blew through the plateau and lost an additional 10 lbs over two and half months. Turns out pantethine can also improve renal function. I take one pill x2 per day (total 900 mg)

I have since researched and implemented a vitamin & supplement regimen which has fixed a number of issues that I had. The supplements I believe have also made putting myself into keto work well. I am currently losing about 1.5 lbs a week while maintaining three days of weight training a week and one day of spending 45 minutes on the bike (burns about 300 calories).

Also check out Almased. Its a protein drink. Not the greatest tasting stuff, but using their program does get you into keto in 4 to 7 days (faster if you keep exercising).
